Celtic were done by VAR but the title race is on

234

Celtic were done by VAR yesterday.  After receiving soft-ish penalty kick, which VAR John Beaton was unable to overturn (because the decision was technically correct in every aspect), he intervened twice in incidents which left scope for referee interpretation.  Consequentially, he determined not only the outcome of the game, but which team tops the league table today.

While struggling against Motherwell a week ago, clear comparable incidents to yesterday’s penalty and red card against Celtic were overlooked.  Yang’s red card was the most egregious of the decisions and ultimately led to everything that followed at Tynecastle.

For unrelated reasons, Celtic remain within touching distance of the top of the table.  Newco’s impressive record of only having lost to Celtic since September crashed at home to Motherwell. The two-point gap at the top of the table will not determine who wins the league as much as which team plays better in the remaining fixtures.  On that point, there is reason to be hopeful.

Yesterday’s 2-0 defeat was completely different than when Hearts won by the same result in December.  Celtic’s passing, movement and purpose was significantly better at Tynecastle.  We still struggle to know what our best 11 is.

Without injured Callum McGregor, there was still no place for Kyogo, who started on the bench.  After coming on at halftime, our Japanese fulcrum put in one of his better performances of the season, playing in a deeper role, behind Adam Idah.  In a side without Reo Hatate and Callum McGregor, there should have been a place for Kyogo.

Look back at the players faces after fulltime at Fir Park, the smiles and camaraderie, which had been missing, was clear to see.  Teambuilding took a further step forward on Wednesday and I am sure yesterday’s shenanigans will further build a siege mentality into the squad.

A friend recalled the 1979, 1986 and 2008 league wins this week.  Celtic looked unlikely to win around this time of the year in both those seasons, but they clicked at the right moment, leading to wins some of us still talk about.  It’s on.

Abada away, big Joe and MO’R in the summer, probably Hatate too. Wouldn’t surprise me if Kyogo goes as well.

Add that to Starfelt, Jota, Mooy, Juranovic, Giakoumakis and very few of Ange’s team will remain next season.

CalMac, CCV, Taylor & Maeda. AJ briefly.

If we aren’t in the ECL we can fully expect a further diwngrading in that department.

We should be looking to Millar at Motherwell and bringing young Kelly on. He looks a good player.

  10. Good Morning Celts…

    REGGIE on 3RD MARCH 2024 11:34 AM

Glad you took the post in the spirit it was intended, too many are sidelined or bullied or off this site.

    BURNLEY78 on 3RD MARCH 2024 9:02 AM

…FYI no one I know mentioned dominance for 24 years or that MON had anything to do with the lawwell period other than his exit and blowing the league in 4/5 season.

Always clear it was Quinn strategy but had to be delivered by someone to keep alive.

Always clear MON despite overspending and need for further funding call did a great job up to 2004.

I laid out the FACTs crystal clear re trophies won over long term. These FACTS don’t lie. This has been by far our most successful domestic 20 years in our history. We also beat more top tier teams in top European competitions in this 20 year period.

FACTs not opinion or indeed lies or misrepresentation…

T’was game day when this was posted, so allow me to retort now…

“I laid out the FACTs crystal clear re trophies won over long term. These FACTS don’t lie. This has been by far our most successful domestic 20 years in our history.”

Let me reinterate again, there is “NO TWENTY YEARS”

The perception you project, in your blog persona, is of the eurodite, thinking persons’ Celtic football supporter.

So let me explain again so you’ll surely understand

    Your trophy count is nonsensical.

    Your revisionism is just nonsense.

When you count Big Pedro’s trophies, you are happy to give him the 2003/04 Double.

PL re-joined Celtic as Head of Operations in November 2003 – yet he’s somehow responsible for that seasons Double and no doubts our European campaign that ran to the quarter finals – putting Barcelona out on the way.

“…or that MON had anything to do with the lawwell period other than his exit and blowing the league in 4/5 season.”

So again, according to you; Peter Lawwell was responsible for the 2003/04 Double, MO’N is responsible for blowing the 2004/05* League.

How does that work out then*

Peter Lawwell became CEO in 2004, he remained in that position until 2020.

    That’s sixteen years…

We regularly won trophies before he was CEO, we he have regularly won trophies after he was CEO

*Remember, MO’N’s squad was “tired” and he was not allowed to sign any players for that season.

Now, you could certainly say, considering the “belt tightening”, after 2004, that the Gordon Strachan era was great both in terms of League wins and unsurpassed European home form.

That belt tightening strategy was put in place by DD & BQ and managed by PL.

So kudos to ALL involved, (it’s a team game dontcha know).

However, the facts speak for themselves, a new Celtic era began in Y2K.

The trophy count has waxed and waned as you’d expect but has been consistently good since the year Two Thousand.

The exceptional, exceptional period, came after our nearest rivals Rangers died in 2012, as you’d expect our trophy haul rate steadily increased.

Once again, Peter Lawwell was CEO for sixteen years (half of them after Rangers died).

    Forget the revisionism.

There was no man with the trophy midas touch, that is a myth.

Since Y2K the managers have been…

MO’N, GS, TM, NL, RD, BR, NL Mk2, AP and now BR Mk2.

We have had five CEOs and we have had four Chairman, we’ve had one major shareholder

We’ve had a huge number of players, coaches and specialists.

It has been some ride trophy wise, yet it was not down to any single individual.

So could we please park the….

Big Pedro: The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Get real and leave it to the latter day Celtic historians to put things in perspective.

I’d expect their shining light to be the twelve trophies in four years, inspired by the Brendan Rodgers revolution of 2016 as being exceptionally successful.

    Hail Hail

Why is Paul letting this guy carry on doing his role of Mod? It clearly is not helping his MH. As the poster/Mod has told us so.

Why would the poster/Mod not take a break if this place is damaging his health?

He needs help fast and I hope he gets it.

One or two posts, expressing genuine humanity in amongst so much intolerance.

    So very sad.

  14. the long wait is over on

    Clunks mate,

I don’t know you and haven’t , to my knowledge, engaged with you on here before but

those posts from overnight suggest that you are in a place , as many of us have been , where you need professional help. Getting to that stage can happen so quickly and stealthily you don’t see it coming.

I say that without the slightest degree of criticism or condescension.

    Yours in Celtic.

  15. The cheating by Beaton has been a consistent feature of refereeing Celtic matches ( and indeed their matches).

We need forensic analysis of decisions he personally makes for and against celtic versus other teams and indeed newco.

Already what i have seen there is a case for a systemic cheating charge which drags in Crawford Allan too. He is the accountable exec along with Ian Maxwell.

This is a chance for Lawwell & Nicholson to step up. They need Beaton removed from Scottish football and this to be a catalyst for change. Beaton is a well known bluenose and celebrated a derby win in a “loyalist” pub in Bellshill. He should be nowhere near any games in Scotlands top flight. Imagine any other club had this help there would be uproar.

Celtic need to hard and all the way on this. Pretty sure Dermot will be pissed off to as £60M at stake and its pretty clear he has a reason for building up the balance sheet.

Somehow Celtic need to involve UEFA too…

  16. Radio Scotland almost gleefully latching on to Souness’ comment that the mobs are not very good, like in England. Very different from they are cheats, which, however incompetent they are in England, they aren’t. They have to say too which team they support.

  17. Majestic Hartson on

    Clunks,

Look after yourself mate. No website/blog is worth going through what you are on here.

  18. I see Paul Tierney has been benched for his misinterpretation/misunderstanding of the rules covering the restart of a game after a head injury related halt while Notts Forest were in possession of the ball in a forward position. In effect he penalised Forest and gave advantage to Liverpool who scored a couple of minutes or so later. Unless I’m mistaken the “injured” player was not required to go off for treatment, and even on first viewing, he appeared to look up from his prone position for a quick preview before getting back up. Not quite on the Rivaldo scale true, but a possible future on the TV series “Faking It”.

Of course Tierney has not been totally exiled next weekend, but rather relegated to the VAR bench. John Beaton will no doubt advise on making a few more monumentl errors from there. And getting paid for it.

  22. The Battered Bunnet on

It’s an interesting quandary for whoever is sitting on the SFA appeals hearing today.

I think they’re going to have to confirm that Yang’s red card stands, because rescinding it confirms to the world that the outcome of the match was determined in large part by the erroneous and unfounded intervention of the VAR official.

Yang was executing a skillful move while in control of the ball in my view, effectively a ‘sideways bicycle kick’ having popped the ball up with his chest. It’s foul play if it endangers an opponent, being reckless as to the opponents safety. The typical sanction is a yellow card.

Confirming the red card with a commentary to the effect that ‘the referee was within his discretion to consider it serious foul play’ – that Yang did it deliberately – is an easy solution.

The path of least resistance will be taken.

  23. The Battered Bunnet on

If Clunks found some catharsis last night, the blog served its purpose. Good luck pal.

  24. Weebobbycollins on

TBB… I think you are correct. If the red card is overturned it will say to the world, ‘ Yes, Beaton was cheating.’

And they will avoid that at all costs.

I went to the Mungo at the same time as Tony ( but in a different part of Glasgow) and played football with him on the very odd occasion. He was a wee guy but supremely talented. We had another guy at the time, Alan Bell, who was even better ( opinion) than Tony. Alan reached the dizzy heights of StMirren Reserves while Tony went on to play for Scotland. He was a really decent wee guy.
