Central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager

580

Match 31 in Celtic’s domestic season: Motherwell at home, 29 wins, one draw and no defeats behind them. It all looks straightforward tomorrow. Right?

A reminder, if needed, that while Motherwell shipped seven goals during the week, St Mirren did the same to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic before knocking us out the Scottish Cup a week later.

It was also Motherwell, at Celtic Park, who ended Scottish football’s longest winning run of league games in 2004. Celtic had just beaten Barcelona but were held by Motherwell to halt the run at 26 consecutive victories.

Runs like this often end against teams with nothing in their locker but desperate defending. You’ll see that from the visitors tomorrow, whose players will surely have had a word with each other about collective responsibility.

Take nothing for granted. Celtic have worked hard to get into this situation in the league but they will have to work just as hard to maintain momentum.

How does Brendan do that? I suspect by shuffling the pack again. We have genuine competition across the team. The central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager in case he drops them and they don’t get another sight of the pitch for weeks.

Full backs feeling a little weary late in the game? Don’t show it, Emilio and Cristian are ready and waiting. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts are both delivering at the highest standard of their careers, otherwise they would not be considered.

While Leigh Griffiths is injured, Moussa Dembele will be confident he will get the opportunity to score three consecutive hat-tricks, surely an unprecedented achievement. It’s only Scott Brown and Scott Sinclair who can be confident of being included when fit.

The former, because he is captain and leader of the team, the latter because he has had the most profound impact on Scottish football this season, unequivocally Player of the Year.

You are looking forward to seeing these guys do their stuff tomorrow, I can tell.

  4. VFR …. I genuinely hope you are right my friend, as if the Board dont do something this year, then I expect that I will not be the only one to stop watching. And, believe me…. coming on here, and hearing how great Brendan has got the bhoys playing, but not being able to watch them … it is killing me.

But, for now, I keep coming back to CQN, in the hopes that things will change, and because, there are just a hell of a lot of nice people on here.

There are times I think the board should do more for the fans, but am afraid as a board they are excellent….. I now think Ronny was plant to win a couple of leagues and get guys like WITS to start a campaign but all along Brendan was lined up but they didn’t want to cough up £65k for two years…..paranoia ? Paranoia now means to me the truth, I still think they couldn’t afford Woods, Butcher, Wilkins & the Stevens……..our grandkids will revel in the truth

    Dessybhoy,

Before I go and do the Lisbon stuff I must answer your last post.

Why on earth do you still believe anything that the press print about David Murray?

It is all cobblers and not just Rangers cobblers.

The day after there was a whole news spiel about Murray’s much heralded scheme for the Edinburgh Garden sites to the west of Edinburgh and how planning permission had been granted etc I had lunch with one of Scotland’s senior planning consultants.

His opinion on the press reports re this were “What a lot of complete crap!”

    That was because

    1. Planning permission had not been granted for anything. All that happened was the Edinburgh City Council agreed to zone certain areas as suitable for residential development — against the recommendations of their own planning officials.

    2. Much of Murray’s land had already been so zoned but he had never had the money to build anything out and still hasn’t.

    3. As and when that land becomes the subject of a planning application, the council is bound to tie it to conditions that before enything is built there has to be a completely new road structure coming into Edinburgh from the west which is capable of dealing with not only existing traffic levels but any new and increased traffic levels created by this so called massive new development. If you have been up near Kirkintilloch or Lenzie recently you will see massive new stretches of dual carriageway etc and that had to happen first before any new houses were built.

Murray’s so called scheme makes the Kirkie road requirement look like a country lane. It will cost gazillions that he doesn’t have and that most housebuilders will not want to spend. There is a rush of precisely no one to buy that land.

The large Heartlands development at West Lothian stood around like a huge white elephant for years before being recently puchased by Bellway Homes. The big Housebuilders don’t want massive developments now or in the forseeable future. If you look at an Cala site you will see they focus on 40-60 houses max.

Murray’s supposed gazillion acre garden development is right up there with Hover pitches and Ronaldo in the private jet.

    4. Murray has alwaysused OPM (Other people’s money) to develop anything. He doesn’t have the money for this and there will be few who are willing to give him any for this site.

    5. Since the site has been zoned, West Lothian Council and others have kicked up merry hell about how this ground was zoned against the advice of the planners. The result is that the Scottish Government have now “called the decision in” and the whole zoning grant is under revue. In other words it is suspended until that enquiry concludes — bet you dodn’t read a huge splash in the papers which told you that eh?

That is not the job of Murray’s famed PR folk. They hide bad news and over egg any good news.

    6. Imagine SDM opening a golf club and club house in Lanarkshire? Gold clubs are struggling for members and income just now. Many are for sale. There are no waiting lists for members and annual fees are discounted. With no disrespect to the course concerned, it is not Trump’s Turburry, Muirfield, Troon, St Andrews, Marr Hall, Loch Lomond, Hoylake, Archerfield or anything approaching that calibre of course.

The A listers that posed for the opening were Walter, Ally and Murdo!!!

And once again it was trumpeted as some major investement and development.

Celtic fans raised more for the Palestinian Kids I suspect!!!

See him for what he is …… not what the paid papers portray him as.

He has some money about him no doubt, but he is not the multu millionaire portrayed and he is persona non gratta in many many financial and business circles, possibly for reasons best not gone into online.

  17. Looking in at the farce in Govan I often get the feeling that they really do have a death wish.

They gave Ally £750K a year from the outset and the kitty started to drain.

Green gave Ally a large sum of money to assemble a team to go up through the leagues ensuring that they ran at a huge loss.

The forefieted virtually all merchandising to a real billionaire due to the fact that Murray had sold off their infrastructure in the previous club.

Not only did the kitty drain at an even more alarming level financially it wasn’t getting topped up.

They hack off the markets by originally lauding the ‘institutional investors’ but when they wanted a return they suddenly became parasites.

    Still the kitty dwindled.

For a brief while they did assemble a board that had business contacts and was working to a plan however that was like the old program ‘Bullseye’ showing the losing finalists what they could have won.

As they were binned the kitty was almost gone.

Out went the old board and in came the new incumbents.

This lost all semblence of credibility with the city. No one will touch them indeed they apear to be shunned by the financial houses.

By this time Ally knew the game was up, he left, so did McDowall, followed by McCall and of course most of the overpaid players signed at the beginning of ‘the journey’ were now out of contract.

Worse still the calamitous failure to gain promotion to the Premiership meant the not only was the kitty now empty there would be no top flight football. More importantly they had also burnt their bridges with Mike Ashley……….. or had they.

A new expensive team had to be assembled to attempt to get out of the Championship as well as a new coaching team hired.

They have tapped there fans for additional money, initially to buy shares, but that is now used simply to prop up the business with nothing in return.

They now survive on continual loans from directors. King refuses to put his hand in his pocket while the other guys go all in to keep the ship afloat.

Meanwhile Sports Direct have a court case in March to get money from the business relating to merchandising.

Just in case this isn’t the death knell they ‘resign’ the first team coaching staff which will lead to more litigation.

If the lose both cases then I believe it is game over although of course it may be over before that if, the rumours are true, that the directors a not putting any more cash in.

So who gains from the King’s madness?

It is on record that he has visited Mike in Shirebrook. What if these two guys are actually working together to bring the business to it’s knees?

When it finally goes under no one is going to touch it with a barge pole; the three bears will already have lost their shirt. Any one who will look under the bonet will see yearly losses extending to infinety, a delapidated stadium, litigation at every turn, no coaching staff, and a virtually worthless squad.

Will this be the point that King takes the stadium for a song simply to sell off as scrap and then dispose of as he wishes. Remember he still believes he is owed £20M from Murray’s time.

Ashley could buy all trademarks which is possibly hat he always wanted and they walk off over the horizon.

Stranger things have happened in this bizarre tale.

At no point over the last five years has any decision taken actually helped the situation.

Every move has either driven down the share price or pushed them further into debt and sometimes both at the same time.

As you are in Stratford upon Avon tomorrow with lots to do and see I would suggest you visit this place tomorrow about 3pm. No worries mate. I appreciate your more erudite explanation.

Unfortunately the problem to me is that we have an OF PLC who will milk the bigot buck to death as that is the MO of capitalism. They dont care about me or you except whats in our wallets. Even though many of our Tims like VFR800 are only supporting the club we love we are caught in this dilemna in my opinion. After much consternation I have come to the conclusion to give them nothing until the huns are gone. A bit like suffering the pain of massive anti biotic and chemical overdose to kill parasites in your blood. After the huns are dead I will buy all the season tickets i used to, contribute to all the internet bampots I used to and celebrate life as one should. When those m**** C***Ts! are dead!

  26. Guyfawkes …

sorry, it has been a long week, so perhaps I am a bit tired… but I’m not sure what point you are trying to make …

as a matter of law, since the Salomon case in 1896, corporations are deemed to have a separate existence from shareholders …

but, I said earlier, sometimes, boards dont always act in that manner and sometimes act in the best interest of the majority shareholder .

if you are disagreeing with the first point, I think you would be, mostly, wrong ….

but I think we are agreeing on the second point ….

so, clearly you are making a point, but I’m not getting it …..

  27. Mags

Seems we have a 20k OF fan base to.

  28. Ernie summed it up earlier.

If DD had ever been to an Orange walk in the hinterland as a punter I think Celtic would already be in the EPL.

  29. Moonbeamswd

I know its hypothetical but, if Celtic failed to reach the CL and there is’nt a sign.of any other club putting in a decent challenge ( maybe cup comps) in the league how long do you think Brendan Rodgers interedt in Celtic will last , as of now i’m not sure our defence has sufficiently improved to be sure of qualifying .

Still loving how we play though, its a joy , and we’ve still got Rogic , Griffiths and Armstrong to come back .

Maybe these views are why i’m on the scroll by list :)
