Central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager

580

Match 31 in Celtic’s domestic season: Motherwell at home, 29 wins, one draw and no defeats behind them. It all looks straightforward tomorrow. Right?

A reminder, if needed, that while Motherwell shipped seven goals during the week, St Mirren did the same to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic before knocking us out the Scottish Cup a week later.

It was also Motherwell, at Celtic Park, who ended Scottish football’s longest winning run of league games in 2004. Celtic had just beaten Barcelona but were held by Motherwell to halt the run at 26 consecutive victories.

Runs like this often end against teams with nothing in their locker but desperate defending. You’ll see that from the visitors tomorrow, whose players will surely have had a word with each other about collective responsibility.

Take nothing for granted. Celtic have worked hard to get into this situation in the league but they will have to work just as hard to maintain momentum.

How does Brendan do that? I suspect by shuffling the pack again. We have genuine competition across the team. The central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager in case he drops them and they don’t get another sight of the pitch for weeks.

Full backs feeling a little weary late in the game? Don’t show it, Emilio and Cristian are ready and waiting. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts are both delivering at the highest standard of their careers, otherwise they would not be considered.

While Leigh Griffiths is injured, Moussa Dembele will be confident he will get the opportunity to score three consecutive hat-tricks, surely an unprecedented achievement. It’s only Scott Brown and Scott Sinclair who can be confident of being included when fit.

The former, because he is captain and leader of the team, the latter because he has had the most profound impact on Scottish football this season, unequivocally Player of the Year.

You are looking forward to seeing these guys do their stuff tomorrow, I can tell.

  1. It amazes me how some have no abstract difficulty in accepting that the creator of the universe ( in and outside the Minkowski light cone) stumbled about the palestinian wilderness in human form 2000 years ago but dont get how the huns are funded.

Maggie doll, I get where you’re coming from but I think you’re extreme thinking is flawed.

I buy my SB and it includes all games, sevco included. I don’t want to ever watch them play against us in Celtic Park so I will choose not to go when they soil our ground. My seat remained empty their last visit, that was my protest.

My view was the same for the hun visit in March but then I got wind of a wee boy in Dublin who’s Dad wanted his young lad to experience the toxic atmosphere of us versus the zombies with him.

I relented and have given up my ticket, reluctantly but gladly if that is possible / makes sense. It does to me, and the wee lad will have a great day out with his dad seeing Celtic hump the new huns bandy.

I don’t understand what you want? Do you advocate that nobody buys a season ticket? W have zero support at Celtic Park?

I’m all for boycotting away games and starving clubs of the money we bring if it makes a point and facilitates change, but starving Celtic of income is not something I would consider sensible.

While I’m here, Magners have been a terrific sponsor for Celtic not least in agreeing to move from our shirt-front to the back of our jerseys. All done without a seat on our board (you think? Yes, i do think)

Celtic FC Foundation imposes and disposes a fraction of the funds our club does each year but even yet C&C, owners of the Magners brand, have a representative on the charity’s Board of Trustees.

That single fact tells me a lot about all three existences.

I don’t disagree but it would be foolish whether we like it or not…. am only going on the people I meet who I can assure you are as intelligent of the fine posters on here….

Can I ask you two maybe 3 questions

Would Brendan be here if the Huns old or new were in the same league ?

Does Scott Sinclair think Celtic v Neeco is the biggest game he has played on ?

Would Moussa & Scott prefer Rangers/Newco to not be in the same league ?

And finally enjoy what we have

    The other questions are rhetorical

Saltires, did you go on Biff’s bus from Heraghty’s or fly over to Budapest?

I was in the Horseshoe a few weeks after the Honved game and bumped into George of the Jungle. He told me Budapest was a great place and apart from the game, it was a great trip.

    —///—///–///–///—///

The Heraghty’s Heroes trips to Madchester were far enough …. hahahaha

We all met in London then flew to Vienna for an overnight stay, then Orient Express to Budapest. met Dunshanbe Billy Bhoy at the local station (change money?)

Trip back was via Munich for some reason….I think we flew back from Munich, but it might have just been a pit stop en route to Vienna.

Years later, working in Bratislava and the quickest way there from Blighty, was flight to Vienna and taxi to Bratislava. i couldn’t remember anything about my first visit there…

I mentioned earlier about my first record player, i remember one new years eve my aunt , uncle , mum , dad and wee brother went to their ( mum and dads friends house for the bells , in those days you stayed over and wherever you fell asĺeep if you were lucky you might get a quilt over you , more often than not it was a coat or jackets to keep you warm .

Returning home later the following afternoon as we aproached the close , mr Grant ( the guy who lived above us) was standing out on his veranda , shouting “thank f..k” yer back , as we got closer to our door all you could hear was the song i had put on the record player ….i left the arm up and the song had been playing right through the nigh and day …….he was livid .

The song was ” merry ploughboy ” my uncles choice btw .

You see, I see Celtic and Rangers as oh so completely separate and different and where I differentiate from our current board is that I believe that there should be no special arrangements made for any game involving that club.

That means I would not be charging kids, students and other discount ticket holders any special price just to see that particular team.

I would not have a third tier business plan in my drawer which factors in the other team, and would rather concentrate on business plans one and two which relate to European income in either the Champions League or the Europa League.

Further, I believe that any third tier business plan which is based solely on domestic football is, by its very existence a failed business plan and is one which should never automatically be resorted to in the event of plans 1 and 2 not fulfilling their potential.

The third business plan should concentrate on automatic and guaranteed domestic income mixed with innovative non football related income.

It must be clear that any business plan which is dependent on a special relationship with any form of RFC is toxic to our own fans, and that real financial growth and strength comes from player investment and increasing the chances each year of proven European money and the various spin-offs from prolonged and European participation.

I have said on many occasions that the Celtic board have a huge variety of expert business brains to call upon for advice and guidance, and I know that they make use of various commercial contacts and so on. However, the board itself needs constantly refreshed and challenged in its thinking (all organisations need that so I am not just saying that about Celtic PLC) and there should be constant evolution and innovation in looking at income generation and the business plans in general.

Having said all that, there are some fans who have chosen to come back this year because of the fun of beating The Rangers. Many who run buses will tell you that the numbers go up when they are the opponents.

However, they are like many of the Ibrox faithful. They are imagining that the opponent is the old club and will deliver the same kind of (unlawful) challenge that the old club did.

    They are deluded.

The quicker that fans, the board and everyone else moves on from any kind of Celtic v Rangers mentality the better in my opinion.

In my opinion, Dermot Desmond has put his hand in his pocket three times for Celtic. Twice for Fergus and once for Martin.

His eight million pound loan to the club, for which he received non-voting equity, was used to complete Martin’s early squad. This capital receives no dividend income and is shown through our accounts as debt only because of Intenational Auditing Standards – technically on liquidation of celtic plc these shares have priority over creditors, so mustn’t be disclosed as capital.

I’ve seen and heard nothing in the fifteen years since those manic times that makes me doubt Dermot will be the rock, Celtic’s enemies crash into, the next time they rise against my club.

As I have said, I get that Celtic is a business. But it is not JUST a business. I believe DD bought into Celtic as an investment (with a view to getting to England and selling his shares for a huge profit), and since then, that has driven too much of how Celtic now behaves

To be honest we all can only speculate on his motives

Well apart from the profit motive of course

Saltires, it must have been MC and a few others who travelled with Biff’s John Colrain CSC from Mickyjoe’s (god rest him) .

The timing of the game coinciding with the Amnesty International gig would added to the enjoyment of the trip.

The next round against Bremen was a terrific trip . One of the few clean sheets we have kept in an away european tie . MD was in top form especially finding a place which sold Apfelkorn then he brought it into the pub we were in before the game. The genial tavern host was not so genial when we started drinking in the pub.

  23. Lisbon lucky breaks: four star hotel (Brrons, appropriately enough) falls through due to mishandling room confirmations so they immediately offer us a three star, central, at half price with breakfast thrown in – bhoys jump at it and entertainment fund rises in relativ eproportion, or slightly more….

Lisbon will be memorable celebration of not only the gretest feat ever achieved by a group of English-speaking footballers, but a chance to revel in the absolute nadir of both Ibrox clubs histories, followed – SURELY – by a weekend return home to see the Celts lift the Scottich Cup and secure the treble.

As memorable weeks go, it should be a doozy.

  24. Who on here will deny that DD’s interest in Celtic was motivated by suspected moves to the EPL?

Who on here will deny that subsequent collapse of such interest resulted in the Lawwell doldrums, the Willo Flood era and the EBT years?

Who on here will deny that BR is here because of hunnery ridiculing DD in last years Scottish cup semi final?

  27. Huns have always cheated.I’ve always been aware.I didn’t need a liquidation event or an official source to tell me.It came as absolutely no surprise to me when it was ‘exposed’ for public consumption. So I learned nothing new.Why then, would it alter my support of Celtic?

If they want to kid on they didn’t die and continue cheating in their new guise, big wowee,so whit.

I got as much as a buzz pumping them this season as I did when we did it to the old huns.As far as I could tell it was the same scum that was supporting them and their misery makes me smile.Same flies etc. etc.

I support Celtic because i’m a Celtic supporter, not because I got to watch us play an Iborcs team that was formed in 1872.So the fact the latest simian 11 is nascent means little to me.If there’s a hun team to beat then lets beat them and enjoy it.

Aye,Scottish fitba, like its society,is as bent as nine bananas in their favour,I can deal with that.I mean, what does it get them?Liquidation,a zombie replacement, and a queue of spivs waiting to fleece them.I hope they’re about for a while,it’s good getting to pile misery on them. But if they ever disappear for good then so be it,i’ll still go and watch Celtic. They’re my team and always will be.

P.S.I don’t care about our board, never saw any of them make a killer pass or score a hat-trick.They’re moneymen, and they’re usually knobs anyway.
