Central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager

Match 31 in Celtic’s domestic season: Motherwell at home, 29 wins, one draw and no defeats behind them. It all looks straightforward tomorrow. Right?

A reminder, if needed, that while Motherwell shipped seven goals during the week, St Mirren did the same to Gordon Strachan’s Celtic before knocking us out the Scottish Cup a week later.

It was also Motherwell, at Celtic Park, who ended Scottish football’s longest winning run of league games in 2004. Celtic had just beaten Barcelona but were held by Motherwell to halt the run at 26 consecutive victories.

Runs like this often end against teams with nothing in their locker but desperate defending. You’ll see that from the visitors tomorrow, whose players will surely have had a word with each other about collective responsibility.

Take nothing for granted. Celtic have worked hard to get into this situation in the league but they will have to work just as hard to maintain momentum.

How does Brendan do that? I suspect by shuffling the pack again. We have genuine competition across the team. The central defenders must be scared to sneeze in front of the manager in case he drops them and they don’t get another sight of the pitch for weeks.

Full backs feeling a little weary late in the game? Don’t show it, Emilio and Cristian are ready and waiting. James Forrest and Patrick Roberts are both delivering at the highest standard of their careers, otherwise they would not be considered.

While Leigh Griffiths is injured, Moussa Dembele will be confident he will get the opportunity to score three consecutive hat-tricks, surely an unprecedented achievement. It’s only Scott Brown and Scott Sinclair who can be confident of being included when fit.

The former, because he is captain and leader of the team, the latter because he has had the most profound impact on Scottish football this season, unequivocally Player of the Year.

You are looking forward to seeing these guys do their stuff tomorrow, I can tell.

    Fair play, wish away……

So what about the younger Celtic fans who really want them to be in the same league, who really want to beat them in every game, fair play you might have your own reasons for them to be about but I can assure you whatever ears you up (and am sure it’s not the best reading your posts) but I can assure you if we were jot playing the Huns guys like Moussa, Sinky, Brendan would not be in front of your eyes whether the old firm hatists like it or not, by the way this “shoite” on here about going tongues legitimises the lie……..why not let the punter decide

CL footy is a bonus. 30k or 60k Brendan gets his shot at qualifiers. It’s not as if he’s had the millions to improve so far that has come in anyway. I doubt he’ll get it. £-0 tops from the £30 he brought in.

OF do we really need them? My opinion is no.

If they want to watch Stupid FC then but Stupid FC season books or volunteer.

My son and all his Celtic mates in their early 20s, want to play and pump the huns, like we did at their age. They don’t care it’s a tribute act. My son never attended an original like his older brother and I did.

  5. No point in getting wound up about this, that and hypotheticals. Let’s see what happens when the BTC is complete. As for Brendan, when he’s fed up he’ll chuck it and it’ll probably be at a moments notice.

In the meantime, these are historic and wonderful times, if you can’t enjoy this Celtic it’s time to chuck the fitba all together.

On the first point, the limited liability of a separate existence is why I started my companies. On the second point, neither Celtic nor sevco have a majority shareholder.

Your pitch to the blog is that our board acts to the interest of our minority shareholder, Dermot Desmond.

My beef with our board is that it acts to its own interest through having too many on it whose only focus is to stay on it.

Celtic is a lucky club to have a Dermot Desmond as an influential minority shareholder.

I agree that many board member, and not just on Celtic, dont really contribute … or, in some cases, act in their own interests … no argument from me on that one.

What a pleasure. I sincerely hope you are well. Our little enclave (or at least a significant number) have upped sticks from Captain Morgan’s in Hayes to Hennessys in South Harrow. I am personally on a brief jaunt to Shakespeare’s Country. Very pretty but requiring the fix of watching Celtic add to their impressive record tally. I caught your drift re the Bourton on the Water “Stream”. Not possible for me so I shall have to rely on the usual stalwarts updating CQN. Please let me know when your next visit to London is and I’ll make point of catching up.

  20. You dont need the huns to support Celtic.

A conceptual difficulty most outside of Scotland and many inside Scotland dont get. I suspect this includes DD. However, the current PLC care not a jot either way. They’d rather have them for the money. I dont.

  21. GFTB

I would absolutely PREFER that 58000 Celtic supporters were attracted to watch Celtic win every week against Hamilton, Dundee, St Johnstone etc.. But if they are only buying their season books to watch 2 games a season then, for me, I wouldn’t miss them. They are not really and truly Celtic supporters but Old a Firm glory hunters.

Na I could live without them.
