Chasing Celtic will bankrupt the Tribute Act

612

The man who wants to be chairman of Rangers International, Dave King, said over the weekend:

“In particular I see a present need to utilise the time we have over the next few seasons to be prepared, both financially and on the pitch, to compete with our Glasgow neighbours when we get back (sic) to the top League.”

Therein lies the problem.  Oldco Rangers under David Murray were driven, “10-in-a-row and two European Cups” was the target Terry Butcher attributed to his former employer.  They lived in someone else’s shadow but needed to think of themselves as superior.  As a consequence, they lost everything.

Now the same crew at it again.  “Compete with our Glasgow neighbours”.  Why not just live within your means?  Be as good as you can be, run your affairs in an ethical manner, whether you win, lose or draw?  Spend the early years of Newco trying to compete with Celtic and the only thing you’ll achieve is a pervading sense of failure.

The Battle for the Blazer, AKA the bid by King to persuade the SFA that despite the enormous evidence to the contrary, he is Fit and Proper to be a director of a Scottish football team is surely pointless.  Rangers International don’t need King as a director, all they need is his money, or anyone’s money.  King doesn’t need to be a director to exact effective control over the club, all he needs to do is appoint proxies. The SFA must issue the JP McEnroe retort, “You cannot be serious?”

My apologies if King’s target is Partick Thistle.

    Excuse the newbie question.

I bought my shares through the HL broker company a couple of weeks ago. Will Celtic be aware of my shareholding via the broker, and will I therefore get an info pack for the AGM, or do I have to register my shareholding in some way directly with Celtic?

79Caps – if that had happened, and your point is attractive with hindsight, then we’d have a few more titles but we’d never get any compensation for the lost CL revenue and they would not have become the laughing stock that they now are. They would not have been liquidated and would have been able to hold onto many of their better players. Worse still, we’d have to play them at least 4 times a season.

One of the highlights for me, and a major surprise too, was how many supporters’ Clubs from the rest of Scottish football led the demand for them to be kicked out, or at least forced to start in the lowest division. This ran contrary to most of their club’s official positions. I think this is what shocked the establishment the most – that most of Scotland actually truly dislikes (being kind) RFC.

  6. As well as calculating how much Celtic FC lose by not having “old firm” games the board should take note of the strength of feeling on sites such as this and calculate how much Celtic FC would lose in:

    cancelled season books,

    low season book sales,

bhoycott of any future meeting between our club and Sevco,

which would almost certainly come to pass if our board are supportive of the dead club.

From what I hear of Footnote on Page 8 suggests they have tied themselves with a stout rope to the sinking ship that is the SS Sevconian and will have to live with the consequences.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but justice hasn’t been done regarding league titles and will not be done. I don’t follow the point about compensation for lost CL revenue, as we have not received this anyway. With them starting with a points deduction we’d have won the league anyway.

Obviously justice would have meant them losing league titles and starting again outside the Scottish league and Celtic and other clubs receiving compensation. Not one of these things has happened. I don’t regard being a laughing stock (for how long we don’t know) as sufficient punishment.

Again, I don’t miss them and I am not happy with the way our Board has conducted itself.

Cults – how do you know that PL isn’t already trying to work our ticket out of this league?

Remember his previous comments regarding us “charming” our way out of Scottish football and also a number of articles from our host, where Paul basically infers that we have indicated to the SFA that we’ll make it financially worth their while!

That’s why the board is against Canamalar’s resolution.

I think they are flying a kite, but they must feel they have to try and do something to get us out of here. I want the oldco stripped of their tainted titles and a major re-structuring of the SFA. The former will never happen (the club are not interested in pursuing this anyway), but the latter is a must have for club & fans. Is PL’s appointment the start of this?!

No matter, I will be watching with interest canamalar’s resolution, as he and Morrissey have put a lot of work into this and it deserves its place in the AGM.

There’s only three native conifers: Juniper, Yew and Scots Pine, none of which are grown commercially.

    Your idea isn’t commercially viable.

  15. With regards to the question of what will happen when we eventually play them, as we inevitable will at some point be it cup or league.

There’s two things I want to see happen:

    1) The club give them the same allocation as they would any other club ie none of the 7500 nonsense.

    2) the fans treat them as any other club at that level ie would I go to an evening cup game against a Div 3 team? Probably not, therefore I wouldn’t go to see them.

In my mind boycotts etc just highlights them as a special case and links them to the old club. If you’re protesting about the SFA handling of them, boycott the whole competition but just doing it for their games seems counter-productive in some respects.

I agree that the board would prefer that we were operating in a different league.

But at the moment,we are not. So we have to play with the hand we have been dealt.

We seem to be sitting with a full house of Aces over Kings, and worried about someone having a Royal Flush.

It is a board which is fixated on income at the cost of the feelings of the support, and of sporting and commercial integrity.

They should focus on doing what is right, and not on a lousy and questionable £2m a season.

you have excluded sales from non ST held seats in the home section

also the significant cost hike for corporate hospitality for those games ..also advertising ( which would achieve world wide exposure )

throw in spending at the game from a full house and the £2m is quite easily achieved

Unfortunately I can see a lot of non-ST holders, or for want of a better terms ‘fans’ (rather than supporters) clamouring for tickets against them.

If that happens it’ll prove the boards point and I’m afraid that in terms of our base income £2M-ish is an awful lot.

    When did you change disciplines?

Kidding,I reckon using your figures that may be possible. However, advertising is done on a contracted annual basis,so no increase. Hospitality is largely done the same way as season books,so the increase would only be in take-up of a few empties. And non-ST sales would be around 7k on top of the same from the huns.

I won’t split hairs, the sum will rise towards the £2m on that basis. Is it worth selling our soul for?

  23. DeniaBhoy in awe of wee Oscar's Courage on

79Caps – no debate from me that justice hasn’t been done. Whether they had been kept in the SPL with punishments or start as they did – neither outcome was satisfactory for our l(the supporters) liking. We wanted them dead. End of.

Re compensation for lost CL revenue, it is pie in the sky I know – but for many years we would have been SPL champions and competing in the CL when they wouldn’t have been. We would have potentially been generating 10-15 million a year more than we did (as it was in those days). So by compensation I suppose I mean lost opportunity to earn what should rightfully have been ours.

The fact the board have never made their opinions public on that matter sticks in the craw (and today basically saying they have no intention of ever doing so). We were told on here several times not to disturb the enemy when they were doing a grand job of destroying themselves – that was just a sop to allow the board to stand apart rather than actually be forced to stand up for us, the club that suffered the most from their cheating. PL, I believe, has done plenty of good for our club but he and the board do not represent the feelings of the vast majority of fans on this matter.
