Starting with a blank sheet of paper and a player found guilty of biting an opponent, I’d struggle to justify a punishment less than 6 games. It’s by no means the worst thing that happens on a football field, or the most dangerous, but it’s primitive, unhygienic and poses health risks.
Few of us have prior knowledge of Nadir Ciftci, so there’s little point in looking online for character references. The player was charged with biting an opponent. He denied the allegation but was found guilty by an SFA disciplinary panel yesterday. I’ve seen photos of Jim McAlister’s bite-sized leg wound and have no interest in hearing mitigating comment about what happened during the Dundee derby.
Despite this, Nadir is having a good month. He signed for Celtic, made his debut and potentially has five Champions League qualifiers to play between now and his domestic suspension concluding at the end of August (yes, six league games in August). If he’s a clever guy, he’ll force his way into the manager’s plans for those five games and never look back. If not, he’ll find his card marked, like a Dundonian leg.

Hoops in the sun..
Hail hail
The ban seems reasonable given the offence
Did I make it?.
I think six games is pretty fair, Paul.
Nadir – this is your wake-up call. Take the ban and learn from it. You are at a great club with a top manager who can develop you further.
Paul67 –
Someone raised a good point yesterday/last night. It is the player who should receive the punishment. The current punishment means both player and club suffer. Seems unfair on the club?
PAUL67
The club knew in advance of signing Ciftci of the likely punishment. He had been treading on thin ice for a while and was well due a turn to face the music.
Of course, being suspended while playing for Celtic rather than facing them had nothing to do with it(!)
Lesson learned, move on. Lesson NOT learned, tattybye.
It’s up to him.

WHoops, don’t tell him :-)
It was a despicable act, and probably Nadir’s nadir as a footballer, and one that deserved to be punished.
He has an opportunity to take his punishment and move on, I am sure our backroom staff will have impressed upon him that this kind of behaviour can not be tolerated at Celtic.
Like you said Paul he can shine in the Euro games, should we progress, and has the potential to be a really good signing for us. I wish him luck.

Let’s hope Ronnie has had a word about Celtic standards..in defencible..
A forward line of Suarez n Ciftci would terrify defences..
I’m quite sure Ronny will have had a long chat with Ciftci and laid down the ground rules for acceptable behaviour expected of a Celtic player.
It’s up to him now.

Poor crowd compared to RM v Roma

After the Eibar game, I thought Lee with his hat trick would lead the line tomorrow, but I have a feeling Ronnie will stick with Nadir to give him game time. Not my preference but I hoop he bags a couple of goals.

Andy Halliday: I’ve not been a Rangers fan since the day I was born.. it goes back even further than that
06:55, 21 July 2015
By Gary Ralston
BOYHOOD bluenose Halliday reckons he was a supporter before he was even born, having gone to his first Old Firm game when he was still in his mother’s womb.
Andy Halliday is put through his paces
RANGERS fans got it all wrong when they claimed Andy Halliday was born a Bluenose – he went to his first Old Firm game when he was still in his mother’s womb.
Halliday has been there, seen it and worn the babygrow after he re-signed for his idols eight years after they left him in tears by showing him the door at Ibrox.
The former Livingston, Middlesbrough and Bradford midfielder was raised on the Copland Road, owned a season ticket for 16 years and comes from a long line of Light Blues supporters.
He failed his English exam at school because he was so late back from the UEFA Cup Final in Manchester and trips to follow the team abroad were regular occurrences during his teenage years.
It was never going to be any other way as his dad, Colin, and mum, Lynne, are such fanatics she even went to Celtic Park in August 1991, almost eight months pregnant, to follow follow her favourites.
Rangers won 2-0, courtesy of a Mark Hateley double, in a game that made such an impression she even considered naming her boy after the England striker when she gave birth five weeks later.
Surprisingly, perhaps, Halliday will make only his second appearance on the Rangers pitch when he plays against Burnley tonight, a decade after running out with his schoolpals for a half-time exhibition kickabout.
It will be an emotional occasion, the culmination of years of hard work and triumph over adversity and, he hopes, the beginning of an adventure that will take Rangers all the way back to the big time after he penned a two-year deal.
Rangers have signed Andy Halliday on a two year deal
Halliday said: “Players come over from Madrid and say they were brought up Rangers fans but I was. If you’re raised on the Copland Road there isn’t much choice about which team you’ll support.
“I’ve done the away games, including the European trips. I was born into it – actually, my first Rangers game was an Old Firm match when my mum was pregnant so I have been going to Rangers games before I was even born.
“She loves telling that story. She told me it the other day – again.
“I’ve heard it umpteen times. She was going to call me Mark after Mark Hateley because he scored a double that day. I don’t like the name so I’m buzzing she chose something else.
“She was almost nine months gone – my old man would have gone mental had she given birth at Parkhead.
“Unfortunately, she won’t be here for the Burnley game as she booked a holiday months ago but dad will be there. Mum will be back for the game against Hibs on Saturday.”
Halliday’s mum and dad were there to wipe away the tears when he was released by Rangers’ head of youth George Adams in 2006 but his support for the club never wavered.
He didn’t kick a ball for three months but laughed off suggestions that, living in the shadow of the stadium, it was like being chucked by a girlfriend only to be forced to face her in the street every day

The advantage here is we accepted Ciftci under difficult circumstances, so, agreed, he really has to prove himself that little bit more. Good management should take advantage of this and scoring goals is a much better way to make headlines and to make your mark ……

What age is this bloke Halliday?
3?
Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery was hospitalised this morning with food poisoning.
Poor Franck was was having a bath and starting eating what he thought were coloured sweets from a bowl at the bathside.
In actual fact, he was munching away at little soap “pearls”.
“I thought they were my favorite “Dragibus” sweets – I love the little black and red ones best.” said Franck.
“I only relalised my error when I started making bubbles when I talked…”
Ribery will be unavailble for selection for 2 weeks while he recovers…
Nadir has a chance now at Celtic to put this behind him and grow into the jersey we have given him. I didn’t fancy him to be honest but what I’ve seen so far suggests he could be a player for us.
Good luck Nadir son, take yer ban and move on into a bright fitbaw future with yer lesson learned..

6 game ban for Cifcti is reasonable and we are fortunate it will be spent in the month of August, meaning that he will be an added fresh domestic option after the international break first week in September.
Still think we need another striker – relying on a fit, sharp Griffiths for 6 league games is problematic, as is no Izzy cover, but hopefully both avenues are being pursued as we speak.
The management team are to be lauded for doing early business this season and qualification for the CL group stages might entice a quality player or two to bolster the squad for that campaign.
We would need that, as in theory, we could draw a group containing Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Sevilla, or one with Chelsea, Real Madrid and Lyon or Ajax.

Yep – we made the choice to sign him knowing he likely to be banned. To my mind it is utterly illogical that Celtic should be denied the use of a player since we were nothing to do with it. The punishment needs to be applied to the individual only – not a club he didn’t play for.
