Starting with a blank sheet of paper and a player found guilty of biting an opponent, I’d struggle to justify a punishment less than 6 games. It’s by no means the worst thing that happens on a football field, or the most dangerous, but it’s primitive, unhygienic and poses health risks.
Few of us have prior knowledge of Nadir Ciftci, so there’s little point in looking online for character references. The player was charged with biting an opponent. He denied the allegation but was found guilty by an SFA disciplinary panel yesterday. I’ve seen photos of Jim McAlister’s bite-sized leg wound and have no interest in hearing mitigating comment about what happened during the Dundee derby.
Despite this, Nadir is having a good month. He signed for Celtic, made his debut and potentially has five Champions League qualifiers to play between now and his domestic suspension concluding at the end of August (yes, six league games in August). If he’s a clever guy, he’ll force his way into the manager’s plans for those five games and never look back. If not, he’ll find his card marked, like a Dundonian leg.

Robert88,
I read somewhere that suarez has been suspended for over 30 games, yet has never been sent off.
Leigh Griffiths spotted buying teacakes in a Glesga Airport shop this morning!
HH!!
Hope this works

Nadir Ciftci should count his lucky stars. Just when his career could have reached it’s lowest point, along come Celtic with a contract which elevates his career beyond his wildest dreams. I doubt if he will now jeopardise that with any future nonsense.

No he got sent off for that hand ball in the world cup and Uruguay still went through as who they were playing some african side hoofed the penalty against the bar if i remember rightly or into the stand!
He has got away with a lot in play though.

Pretty sure he will see it as a wake-up call. Certainly hope so!
When Celtic were buying Cifti they would be well aware that he was facing a lengthy ban and they decided to push on so they obviously think the player was worth the inconvenience of waiting for him to serve such a ban. So as a supporter I see no sense on grumbling about the ban we should just accept it and move on. H.H.

Masty, the Famous Follow Follow Banned list. Surely you’ve heard of it?
Just checked suarez’s wiki, he has 1 red card during his time at gronigen.
That’s no a list, that’s just bigots being bigots.

and one in the World Cup
Bite someone out on the street .. Classed as a serious assault .. Be a result if you got 6 months ..
Hopefully the big man will screw the nut, now he’s at a big club ..
Sure he will, and be a success ..
Mon the Nad’s ..

I think the jist of the article I read was over 30 games suspended , no red cards involved.

We’re not being punished “for something a player at another club did”. The punishment is for our player.
Now I think there’s an issue as to why the disciplinary took so long but I still think any punishment should carry over from one team to another. Otherwise any player knowing he had a move on the cards could do anything in the last game of the season, aware that it wouldn’t affect him in the next team.
———————————————————–
Perhaps my use of the word “punishment” in relation to the impact on the club is misleading. I get that it is a consequence rather than a deliberate punitive measure against Celtic. But the fact remains that a club completely unrelated to the incident suffers significant consequences. To my mind that is illogical. Are they not able to impose some other kind of sanction that affects only the perpetrator. That would be much more appropriate since it targets the offender. E.g. a substantial fine? Community service…?
OK that one was in jest… :-)
Afternoon Timland from a seriously hot hun free mountain valley.
Been busy so no had a chance to read back.
This new hun, Halliday, jeezo we had better watch out for him, he is going to be worth squillions soon, and we will all be doomed.
I’m surprised they can breathe without a machine FFS

Jock Stein signed Dixie Deans whilst he was serving, I think, a six week suspension for punching an opponent. He turned out not too bad.

I know nobody is moaning at the length of the ban and quite rightly so. But some on here today have suggested he should not be banned from any games whilst a Celtic player because the incident took place whilst he was a Utd player.
Pile of steaming pish so it is!

Maybe some are saying that, but to be clear – I’m not. I’m raising the question as to whether the rule is appropriate.

That’ll be Coral’s on the list! Anybody wanna bet?

It most definitely is appropriate, no arguments, I am surprised no fine has been imposed, so Chief chi has done ok.

Yeah, I mentioned the fine thing too. I think associations are hesitant to implement such a punishment as they would have to measured against the players income. So if an Annan player did the exact same thing, he wouldn’t be facing a £40,000 fine.
But that would involve mathematics and brain work, something the SFA are not renowned for.

Have the good people of Burnley been warned?
Also, let’s scrape together the money and bring James McClean home.
Who the hell does Pullis think he is?
Pulis knew what James McClean was about before he signed him.
Hope McClean tells him to shove his club!

Halliday said: “Players come over from Madrid and say they were brought up Rangers fans”
*that was what that hauf wit named after the founder of the Jesuits claimed.
My only gripe with the Ciftci ban is that it should have been dealt with the week after the incident.
Why did it take so long?
Nadir, Nadir, Nadir
What are you wearing on your head son?
On the morning after you are banned for being a ned with teeth – you show up at the airport wearing a curtain turned into a hat – and manage to draw even more attention again to your poor decision making – this time in choice of headgear.
What happened to the club tracksuit for travelling?
Ronny, get hats on the banned list when the team appear in public, please.
Hatsoff not Hatsdoffed CSC
6 League Games in August?

I can understand why some folks might feel that the Nadir suspension unfairly punishes his new club.
Along the same lines, lets think of a situation where a star player is sent off against Celtic and subsequently receives a 1 match ban.
Is it not the case that Celtic were the team who were disadvantaged when the player committed the sending off offence, but it’s the team who played against Celtics opponents next who really benefit while the star player serves out his one match ban?
It could even be the case that the team who play Dundee united next may be Celtics title rivals (for example Aberdeen) and the banning of the star Dundee Utd player in a game vs Aberdeen could actually disadvantage celtic further.
Like I said, I don’t offer a solution, but the banning of players seems to give the benefit to the opponents that play the team next and not the team who had the offence committed against them.
In an ideal situation Dundee (who were sinned against) would have some advantage rather than Celtic having some disadvantage. Perhaps he should serve out his ban not for the next consecutive 6 games, but in the case of Nadir maybe he should be banned for the next 6 games he played against Dundee
Afternoon All
Any guides for somewhere to watch tomorrow night in the Shepherds Bush area?
Cheers in advance
If any Celts are in the Kirkcaldy area tonight a new stand is opening at Raith Rovers. It is named after Turnbull Hutton who will be remembered for not being bullied by those(still in our game) who would rather the industrial cheating under David Murray was swept aside and moved on from.Thank you Turnbull for your stance and integrity. The cheat died and a new corporate hoof was ‘accepted into’ our football structure. They know it happened as do we.

If it punishes a club that had nothing to do with it then why is that appropriate? Would it not be more appropriate if it punished only the player who committed the offence?
BTW – no arguments? That’s the only reason people log in here! :-)
