Ciftci, the bite and having his card marked

649

Starting with a blank sheet of paper and a player found guilty of biting an opponent, I’d struggle to justify a punishment less than 6 games.  It’s by no means the worst thing that happens on a football field, or the most dangerous, but it’s primitive, unhygienic and poses health risks.

Few of us have prior knowledge of Nadir Ciftci, so there’s little point in looking online for character references.  The player was charged with biting an opponent.  He denied the allegation but was found guilty by an SFA disciplinary panel yesterday.  I’ve seen photos of Jim McAlister’s bite-sized leg wound and have no interest in hearing mitigating comment about what happened during the Dundee derby.

Despite this, Nadir is having a good month.  He signed for Celtic, made his debut and potentially has five Champions League qualifiers to play between now and his domestic suspension concluding at the end of August (yes, six league games in August).  If he’s a clever guy, he’ll force his way into the manager’s plans for those five games and never look back.  If not, he’ll find his card marked, like a Dundonian leg.

  2. Nadir Ciftci probably thought in his wildest dreams that he would ever get the chance of signing for a big club like Celtic where he would have the opportunity of winning trophies and playing European football. Unfortunate that his career at the club starts with bad publicity and a deserved ban as a result of previous baggage.

I live on the very end of the NY Metropolitan suburban sprawl, about 50 miles from NY.

I rarely visit Manhattan now, and generally only when family are out.

I have golf courses, (One owned by Trump) cornfields, horse farms, trout rivers, small, very small, towns and hills within a bicycle ride.

Not that I fish or ride a bike anymore.

I’m within an hours drive of the Jersey Shore or Philadelphia.

For a boy rared in North Lanarkshire’s little green oasis it’s idyllic.

Everyone, almost without exception, is hospitable and friendly. The women in particular love the Scottish accent and want to engage in conversation. Maybe they fantasies I’m Connery since I grew my bears?

So I grin when I read about the generalizations about NJ as much as I do about the picture painted that all Glaswegians are hard drinking, foul mouthed womanisers.

(One of the preceding may be accurate.)

    Sispini,

Re booking, I would say now.

The airlines will push up prices.

B and Bs are of a good standard in Ireland. Given the amount of time you will spend in a hotel, don’t discount that.

Would be great to see you here.

Not worried ( very much!) about tomorrow night. I didn`t think Stjarnan were very good and, provided the pitch is reasonable, I would expect a victory over there to add to the one we achieved at Home.

Talking of a not very good side, I just watched a few minutes of the Sevco game and thought they looked a more fluid side than anything I saw from them last year. Maybe Warburton is a wonderful manager…….or maybe Burnley are only going through the motions 0:-)

GG … I spent a bit of time at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey … what a lovely town. I must say, the American ‘university towns’ are often quite lovely little places … at least, the ones I have seen have all been nice.

But I have to admit …. I LOVE Manhattan … never thought I would like it (too big, too noisy,…), but when I first went there, I fell in love with the place … great energy, great jazz, great food, always something to do … mind you, I”m not sure I would want to live there …. you would need to get away from it sometimes … but, then again, if I could afford the rents in Manhattan (I cant!!!), then I could probably afford a nice little get away somewhere. okay… a nice apartment in manhattan, overlooking central park, and a little pied a terre in Paris would be fine. :)

One of the reasons I posted as I did was that I thought I might jinx them. Looks like I did!

Strange as it may seem, when I went to NYC in 1982, I felt I was in a taller Glasgow! I really liked the general atmosphere but for my year there I was upstate (Brockport, Nr Rochester) I was only in the City one more time (went to McSorley`s and enjoyed it tremendously!). Generalisation, I know, but I found the American people incredibly open and friendly. I loved my time there.

Hopefully big Ciftci will play five European games, plus the friendly against Rennes to get/keep him fit throughout his ban. We will do ok in the SPL without him, and somebody gets a chance to make a mark in the league games.

43 OFF THE POST. Tierney picked up the ball from Nesbitt who tried to chip it into the net, but the ball hit of the woodwork and is cleared

Apologies about the slow updates this evening, we’re experiencing problems with WiFi. #ClaretsLIVE

  22. Sipsini: keep an eye on the flights. I usually get return flights for €40 – €80. Ruinair and Aer Lingus fly in and out of Glasgow/Edinburgh to Dublin. BnBs are also good value, especially considering how little time you will spend in accommodation.

I constantly check to see who is planning events for next Easter Weekend. So far, the government and Sinn Féin seem to be the most proactive but many groups including trade unions, the GAA and community groups are currently in the planning stages of their events.

Once we have a broad range of planned events to publicise we will post them on the blog.

    St Cyril’s was the church.

If my memory serves me they had a beautiful garden area.

First Catholic Church I saw with a big screen on the side where the hymns and prayers were displayed.

The priest’s very long sermon was accompanied by his PowerPoint presentation.

    It was also multi lingual.

I was more attentive to the technology than to the homily.

Coincidentally I was in the US when Braveheart came out, saw it for the first time just North of Boston. Enjoyed telling the Americans afterwards that the movie had a different title over in Scotland; ‘Mad Mac’.
