Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

I’m surprised Pat claims not to understand Celtic fans anger at the Cup Final accusations. I would expect an intelligent freelance Scottish sports journalist would be aware of the sensitive nature of such issues and the dirty war going on to destroy the hard earned good reputation of our support.

Yes Pat was stitched up and maybe Rob too but the real victim of the lies is the club and support.

I just can’t accept that the Pat Nevin incident was orcastrated by Jack Irvine.

How many of those complaints contained references to peados etc? We don’t know and have no way of ever finding out.

Was Pat Nevin such an influencial opponent of sectarianism for the Jack Irvine to want him silenced? What purpose did it serve?

Your inference actually raises more questions and just doesn’t make any sense on any level.

Could it be that before Nevin gave his evidense to the Justice commitee he was breifed by BBC on the complaints and he exagerated their contents to ellicite sympathy?

    ……………………………………..

I don’t want to speak about the man but find that I have to say that of the many, many, hours that I spent, taking my complaint about Nevin, McLean and the Producer of the Sportscene programme, not once did I say or even hint in any way that I wanted these people dismissed.

My concern was damage to the club that I love and an end to double standards whereby Rangers fans could and did sing any bigoted anthems they wanted without censure but when our fans sneezed the hammer came down.

Anyone who hasn’t done a full complaint to the BBC should do so once for the experience. Mine probably took longer than most because I objected to my complaint being dealt with as a generic one in a group action. I found grounds for complaint where others didn’t and they objected to things that I didn’t.

I have never met Jack Irvine but know people who have.

But the answer is no and I will tell you why.

This is meant to be a football magazine and while I am all for widening it out– including to pundits and commentators — the very presence of Irving and the level of that presence in Scottish Football is not something that I support or relish.

Here is someone who twists the news, deflects the truth and has been shown to have an agenda which takes away from football.

I would see it as part of a job or function to interview anyone about supporting Celtic or about following football if that is their job—- for example I hope to have features on two very different journalists and a well known commercial artist in the next issue. Two of these are Celtic fans, and one is not but can speak on past games and experiences at Celtic park and elsewhere.

I wouldn’t mind interviewing non Celtic players about their experiences at Celtic park or playing with ex Celtic players or whatever — but why bother with a man whose job was to plant negative and even fictitious stories about our club, our players, our fans and so on.

That is not a discussion about football or football coverage — it would be an article where I would want to delve into areas which have nothing whatsoever to do with CQN magazine and besides………. afterwards I would need to have a shower in disinfectant!

  9. BRTH

Read the PN article twice before I posted @15:45 today – not changed my thoughts on the events of the day and the subsequent fallout.

I concur with your points (6&7) – nothing will convince me that this was brought about by the actions of one rogue BBC employee. This was staged-managed (even briefed?) and PN jumped in with both feet – he missed an opportunity (in your vg article) to set the record straight or a least give a ‘nod in the right direction’ to who/ where the so-called fact originated.

You gave him scope to justify his stance on racism – he took it. His chance to clarify or elaborate on the depth of sectarianism (outwith CFC) he fudged.

    Quisling? Recreant? Scapegoat?

PN fits the bill on at least 2 out of 3 in my eyes!

Great blog Paul but why offer PN such an easy ride. He had no defence other than one he refused to allow us to hear although WC and BRHT have it hidden well away in their respective sock drawers. So he stopped supporting us in the 1980’s? I saw him frequently in the Jungle at the height of the troubles along with the rest of us. Was he suddenly surprised by the songs? If so when? I hugely admire CQN but that interview was footballs’ version of HELLO so maybe Posh and Becks L.A. cookbook is next. HH.

  13. NatKnow - Supporting Wee Oscar on

The opportunity remains for Pat Nevin, Rob McLean, the BBC and whoever else involved to issue an explanation and apology to the Celtic support for the lies they broadcast. The opportunity will always be there for an explanation and apology.

As Pat will know, the Celtic support do not forget quickly. This interview doesn’t draw a line under anything. The issue will remain live for a long, long time. Every time I hear Pat Nevin or Rob McLean’s names it will remind me of the lies that were broadcast by them both.

  14. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

    Eddieinkirkmichael

I undertsand what you are saying but i think you read me wrong and I have to watch what I say here.

Nevin, himself is not important in this jigsaw– and I don’t mean that to sound cruel on Pat nor the words of a conspiratorialist — I think it is far simpler than that and even more innocent.

Irvine’s office was in touch with the BBC about the definition of Sectarianism for some reason— I am going to guess that it was to deflect matters away from Ibrox as they had had alot of publicity about what they sang especially after McAskill made his “Glorious Occasion” supergaff.

That was bad for Rangers and they were seen in a bad light– especially in Edinburgh where they might soon be going for help with various financial matters.

So– wheel in jack who has spun the spin before– we all know that.

Who is spoken to and what is said to the BBC we don’t know but by coincidence the guy controlling the show is no Celtic fan ( don’t ask how we know ) and suddenly he comes up with his own definition.

He orders Mclean to raise the issue— By the way I believe Mclean to be blameless in this but he is a long enough in the tooth BBC employee to know this is most odd and caveats his comments.

Is he directed to throw the matter to Nevin? Who knows– but look at his choices— Levein, BBJ or Wee Pat — who is going to react?

I know who my money would be on– and he did– stupidly– and I believe that it is something he regrets for lots of reasons– some selfish, some good, maybe some not so good or honourable!

As soon as they are done— a few people raise the question about the broadcast immediately — by the way none of that comes from Nevin — he doesn’t know we know any of that.

The point here is that either the BBC ( let alone Pat Nevin ) was hijacked or someone in the BBC ( the producer or more ) allowed it to be hijacked.

As big Nan says– the amswer to the complaints– did not answer the complaints AND Pat Nevin says– swears— he was told that there were 1,000 plus complaints calling for him to be sacked!

And he received abuse etc using the words that we have mentioned.

I am not saying those complaints were orchestrated — I am just saying that some of them use language which is pretty strange in the context of what Celtic fans had to complain and be vociferous about.

Likewise I am uncomfortable with some of the comments I have seen on other media about Aberdeen fans. A small number of idiots at Tynecastle were well out of order but we have nothing to gain from any trouble on Saturday. I don’t expect any trouble but we shouldn’t be complacent.

    ======================================================

Agree with you, Aberdeen (like ALL teams) have a few bams but I don`t think there is much bad blood between us & them. Over on FF one poster said a police friend of his heard there was trouble ahead this weekend. Cue the predictable responses, the last one really sums up what they are about.

Here’s a thought. Why are there 4th officials at Rangers matches in league 1 but none in the Championship at all in a higher division?

  17. Ah, reading through, perhaps the crux.

Pat decried what was reported to him as sectarian chanting. That can be seen as fair comment. Information from a trusted source.

When he discovered no such chanting took place, he did not redefine his statements.

He didn’t quantify them, “I condemn sectarianism, although I realise, on this occasion it did not take place”.

Not on the highlights show of that Cup Final.

Not on Twitter, and not in the CQN interview.

Not even taking the opportunity to apologies for perceived offence.

This may explain why some continue to mistrust him.

Is that why Celtic supporters have dismissed Pat’s musings?

    Perhaps that’s just me.

  19. Brth. As far as I can see and although he accepts the h&n pound ,I would have liked the club and support , to weed out the cancer in the bbc behind the act , rather than hound nevin . Also this guy irvine seems to be behind all the bad publicity that heads celtics way , and he seems to go unchallenged . Would love to see George Galloway take him on ,on our behalf . We then might get to know the true extent of thems troubles .

Sorry you think it is a puff piece– what else would you have asked him? Thanks for doing the interview in the first place BRTH. I do think it was worthwhile, and don’t see it as giving the oxygen of publicity to someone whose opinion I don’t want to read.

Perhaps Rob as an employee cannot comment – and perhaps he wishes it had never happened. However, this was certainly an opportunity for Pat to set the record straight with some unequivocal language on the issue. Unfortunately it seems that he didn’t want to grasp the opportunity presented – for whatever reason.

On other interviews, I’d love to see one with Fergus.
