Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

  1. Nevin already gave his reason for supporting hibs in an interview with the Guardian. He said it was because of ” the pure love of their concept of the game”.

    Was that more bullshit then?

In the same interview asked if he fell out of love with Celtic?

That was for a different reason. That was all to do with the sectarianism. I have no great dislike or hatred, you don’t have that about a club you supported for 35 years, but I found myself sitting beside people who were saying things that I was very uncomfortable with politically and morally.

    Loada nonsense.

  2. I’m reading the Pat Nevin interview, WC, BRTH, well done, always better to get a rounded look at an issue.

Pat, I wonder, do you feel you were duped, used for an agenda because you have been so outspoken on race, equality issues in the past?

Benefit of the doubt for me. That is different from what I thought I would, also different from what I felt reading it the first time around.

I haven’t read back, what is the general view?

I’m away to find out if I’m sailing against the tide here.

On that specific point I find it a tad disturbing, for this reason.

Pat must have known Celtic have made huge strides in eradicating all forms of sectarianism, when was the last time you, anyone, can remember any real, widespread sectarianism/racism at CP,if he had expressed a bit of surprise at the suggestion, and I mean more than a wee”if” I would be a great deal more sympathetic than I am.

Benefit of the doubt, but doubt remains.

I already posted that in share prospectus for Sevco the document said something like 5m was to go towards essential maintenance of the stadia, the document is still on there in cyberspace somewhere. I have no need to find it as it was commented on enough at the time, the only issue for me is I can’t remember the exact fig, it may be more than 5m.

I also posted a response from the commenwealth committee in Glasgow where they stated they were awre of any issue with the roof at Iboke at a recent home game.

I’m prepared to except that the asbestos issue may be a red herring, if it is then the 10m fig is probably wrong. Remember though that Ibroke is 40yrs old, maintenance will cost much more than a newer stadia.

Almost every bear I know who goes there comments on the condition and they say things aren’t getting fixed. I also posted about someone I personnally know someone who works for the firm who are responsible for the upkeep of the roof. He has stated that there are parts of the roof that they not allowed on as they are deemed to unsafe even with a safety harness.

Dont normally comment to much on things on here ( but read every day ) but the build up to this article had me expecting much more .

Nevin has tried to use CQN to save face , he done the dirty on the Celtic support and consequently Celtic Football Club . Unforgivable in my opinion.

BT, read it, there is a sense of a bloke who has been conned, I don’t think he can quite admit it. Pat Nevin is someone I used to listen to, felt betrayed by him when he turned his back on us, still don’t really understand that one. But his choice. Stopped listening, now might listen again, see what he has to say.

I would like to hear him say he was sorry for offence caused though, did he? Did I miss that in the interview?

Back in the late 70’s early 80s the Ayr 9-in-a-row bus used to belt out a repertoire of songs to get us in the mood for a match that, funnily enough, had little to do with football.

On the playlist, gems like “No queen on the throne, no lodges to sadden my eyes . . .” can’t remember the rest. Then there was the old “Lord Mounbatten had a boat, ee, i ee, i ,o, and on that boat there was a bomb . . .”” ditty not to mention how Michael Fagan enjoyed a wee encounter with Lizzie at the Palace.

How I long for those innocent days of youth.

There are a few things online attributable to him and some of his answers just don’t stand up for me. TBH though it makes no difference to me as HT said earlier, he is not a Celtic fan, he openly states this.

  23. BT, ok, we all have opinions, it simply isn’t a big enough issue to debate for too long.

Made my points, read and taken yours on board, accepted a different point of view.

We can discuss this, or more enjoyable matters over a pint on Saturday.

Will Griffiths start on Saturday, chatted to anothe couple of Sheepies today, they intend to ousting and outplay us at Lunchtime on Saturday, NFL will have to get the Bhoys motivated, and that’s just the supporters attending!

Without fear or favour, the fact he hasn’t apologised to 30,000 Celtic fans who were at the 2011 cup final, who he suggested were sectarian, may just be the reason the Celtic fans are rightly pissed off with him. To state that the studio being soundproof was the reason he never commented on the league cup final hate fest is very poor, he’s meant to be a journalist ffs, check your source. Smacks of poor me, grow a pair Pat.

The article was well done and informed me of a few things I was not aware of.

Unfortunately although he may have been duped in this instance he either cannot see that or chooses not too.

He clearly states his need to work as he never got the big money present players got. I find the need for him to make that point interesting.

His media career is his decion making driving force. It puts his decision to support Hibs into perspective. Would he have been a co commentator on BBC at a Cup Final involving Celtic if he was still a season ticket holder at CP???
