Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

In that case, like Nevin, he wouldn’t want to comment for fear that he wouldn’t get future gigs.

Nan, I too persued the BBC on this issue, even writing to points of veiw to no avail. Not once did I or any of those that I knew who also complained asked for anyone to lose their job. I wasn’t aware of Nevin’s evidense to the justice comittee at the time and it surprised me that he had said this.

I even went to my MSP and MP to seek help in persuing this complaint but it appears their was a collective wanting this issue to go away so the say nothing and move along brigade won the day. I was dissapointed that more fans didn’t continue to harrass the BBC for a answer to their complaints but that’s life I suppose some start off with good intentions but aren’t prepared to g the distance.

Sorry I took what you were saying in completly different wat to that which you were meaning, I sometimes have a habit of doing that and it’s why I had to read the interveiw a couple of times.

What you say actually ties in with some of the Charlotte stuff that was released last year about Irvine press contacts in how to counter the attacks on Rangers and charges of sectarianism by tarring Celtic etc.

BTW would a FOI request reveal the contents of those complaints? Or are they covered by data protection?

  3. Just read the Pat Nevin interview. First, I don’t know the interviewer as a person, but thoroughly enjoy his contributions on CQN.

I thought the interview was ‘soft’, in the sense that the old Stockholm Syndrome seems to have taken over. Lots of explanations that come across as efforts to make Pat look/sound better.

I also thought that Pat, even if he was being ‘played’ by the BBC…..was AWFULLY naive, almost to the simpleton extreme. So naive that some of what he says can’t be believed. For example, he doesn’t know the words to TBOTOB.

Really. All these years in the jungle, and all he heard were shouts about macaroon bars?

Scotland’s media works hard to discredit and taint Celtic and their support. There are many who would do it for nothing. Pat did for their shilling. As such, I have little sympathy for him.

The rest of the magazine is pretty good. Congrats to those who worked on it.

My understanding is that he has been a BBC employee for the last few years having previously been freelance but I am open to correction.

A brilliant post explaining the interview from your perspective. Your posts are always great reading. While I am not likely to read the interview because of the enmity I hold towards Nevin, I in no way criticise you for doing so. Plenty of other Celtic supporters hold different views from myself on a whole range of matters and will have read, and in some cases re-read the interview and will have altered their views towards PN or had those views confirmed ( reference earlier posts). I appreciate you taking time to expand on the interview and give us such good background information.

Celtic did complain, they told us so and the BBC confirmed it.

But what happened next they never told us; not the BBC nor Celtic. (or I never read it at least)

There might also be a big interview to be done in Manchester on Friday. Intriguing one if it happens.

Was he an employee at the time?

I had understood that he still was an employee of the corporation whether he did Sportscene or not– but again can stand corrected.

I know quite a few folk at the Beeb– some staffers–others freelancers though of these some have long term contracts with the beeb.

Cheers — the whole point is to inform, create discussion and interest, and if necessary to alert. The interview bothered me for a whole host of reasons and i won’t for a minute hide the fact that I prefer telling a story as opposed to conducting an interview but this was interesting and we thought we should do it.

Whether it changes anyone’s opinion on anything is up to them, though I do believe that he should not have been subjected to the kind of abuse he describes.

On a separate note here is a wee video ( non Celtic related ) that I found interesting– and on the story telling front hopefully the Strandsky blog can get a little of my attention as I have tales to tell about Two Americans, a German and a quite remarkable if unheard of Scotsman — If I can find the time lol

  11. Lothian boys club have written to Scottish FA compliance officer Vincent Lunny to complain about the non-payment of compensation money allegedly owed by Hearts and Rangers.

Musselburgh Windsor FC, who celebrated their 60th anniversary last year, say they have taken the stance to alert boys clubs throughout Scotland that they are due thousands of pounds by professional clubs. Their own complaint relates to an under-15 goalkeeper who joined Hearts, and two younger outfield players who were released to join Rangers.

Club president Scott Robertson says his club is spending more money pursuing the complaint than it will actually get if Hearts and Rangers are forced to pay up. That is because boys clubs are due just £10 every time a senior club takes one of their registered players – a situation Robertson describes as “disgraceful”.

    From the Scotsman.

  12. Just read the Pat Nevin interview. So glad someone asked him to explain the events around his comments, shame it has taken 3 years for some light to be shed on this. Well done Brogan et all. I’d been left with a petty jaundiced view of Pat since that infamous day but still enjoyed absorbing his EPL football insights via BBC online. Now he can be restored in my mind to where he was pre 2011. A white hot/ice cold auld school winger with a Johnny Marr haircut who was brave enough to speak out on the unmentionable football/society issues North and South of the border when barely anyone else would.

Pat Nevin can walk through Celtic Park’s front door with his held very high.

  13. Anyone who has been hanging around CQN for a while may remember a favorite Kojo, or maybe his boss/ predecessor Fargo, expression.

    The big C

It meant CONTROVERSY in the MSM which led to a rise in circulation.

The Pat Nevin interview has achieved the same end, stimulating responses and raising hackles.

I haven’t read it yet, and probably won’t as I am not nor never was interested in anything he did or said during nd father his football career.

    HOWEVVA, there goes Kojo again

I would relish reading an interview with John Clark who ranks alongside Billy and Bertie in my pantheon of Celtic Gods.

I alluded to the fact on the live update thread Sunday when he was caught on screen.

The. Brush was and still is the consummate Celt.

I remember Martin saying he used to drag John into his office and have him relate tales of the Lions and particularly Jinky’s shenanigans.

I’m sure that being the proper Gent that he is, John would readily agree.

We have tried and are still trying.

However to do this properly John, as an employee of the club, needs the sanction of the cub before giving any interview to anyone….. and we get the impression that he has so much to info, insight and background knowledge that he might prefer to be away from the club before he does so.

He is also the only living Lion to have never done a book……. and boy what a book it would be!

Forget about Pat Nevin and other heroes of that kidney.

Scabs are scabs for all that and there are many associated with Celtic.

As I said earlier: in the PN interview I picked up on the emotional aspect that I think you tried to convey in the reporting of the interview.

Now maybe you were too compassionate (or too good for your own good) but I heard a guy hurting. Now maybe he brought that on himself but then maybe he thought he was amongst folk who would know where his heart lay and was hurt when he realised just how much he had alienated himself from them.

Perhaps that is why he could not apologise if he knew that he never meant any offense, although an apology could have been couched in those terms.

Whatever, I felt sorry for him but that at least you got me listening.

    Listening

You are not listening to me when….

You do not care about me,

You give an answer to my problem before I’ve finished telling you the problem

You cut me off before I finish speaking

You find me boring but pretend to listen

You feel critical of my feelings

You tell me of your experience but seem to find mine unimportant

You are communicating with some one else while I am talking

You refuse my thanks by saying you have not really done anything

You are listening to me when

You come quietly into my private world and let me be me

You really try to understand me

You grasp and accept my point of view even when it’s against your conviction

You do not try to take my problem away from me, but stand by me while I wrestle with it

You give all your attention to me

You accept my gift of gratitude by telling me how good it makes you feel to know you have been helpful

  22. I was at the Open Meeting tonight which dealt with Celtic’s responses to questions arising from the previous meeting.

I think they will be posted on the CST site for anyone interested.

The meeting then went on to discuss them.

It should all appear on the CST web site in the coming days.
