Co-op awards Celtic the League Cup Final

940

Really pleased the Scottish Professional Football League have awarded the League Cup Final to Scotland’s largest football stadium, Celtic Park.  We are now hosting the League and Scottish Cup finals, as well as the head of Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, at the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

So with the Commonwealth and Scottish Cup gigs going to Celtic, why didn’t Newco Rangers get the other final at their 50,000 capacity facility?

Back in the days such certification existed, Ibrox was a Uefa five star venue, whereas Celtic Park was four star, but maintaining those standards takes, well, maintenance, which has not been a priority in some parts.  Celtic Park remains highly functional, and safe.

There is also the hazard of planning an event, even six weeks out, at a venue owned (cough) by a company which does not have bank credit facilities and who are broadcasting financial distress signals like some kind of insolvency Batman call.

These perfectly valid reasons are, of course, a mere distraction from the real reason, the Co-op Bank, which controls Glasgow City Council, is also able to manipulate league football in Scotland and decided to award the final to their partner organisation, while cutting their borrowing rate, by way of compensation.

Issue 19 of CQN Magazine is fresh off the press, 104 pages of great stuff from the CQN community.  10 men won the league, Dam Justice, the Celtic Foundation, and Brogan Rogan outs the difficult questions to Pat Nevin about his Cup Final comments.

Celtic goin’ toe-to -toe with Aberdeen for the domestic trophies would be like the good ole days.

it may even bring back the ole thunder this Saturday lunchtime.

  2. A couple of interesting posts on the RIFC Shares Discussion Board this morning.

1st. “Share issue would need to go for shareholder approval. Re sale and leaseback it might be the same although the directors may be allowed to make a decision on this if the Articles permit. In both cases they are only viable if you have interested parties. Sale and leaseback unlikely due to the apparent claims from hWyte and generally the financial condition of the club ie no point in buying a stadium when the company supposed to be renting it from you might go bust (even with injection of cash it wont be 20m or anything near that) Where I’ve got to is no player sales possible, no external finance available, sale and leaseback not a goer at present. Share issue (that won’t happen over night) or admin are the two options left for me.”

Then no.2 “Apologies, my reply was unclear. I was solely referring to the properties transfer from RFCL to RIFC (which most people are now referring to as S&L). DK54 is right re external sales/share issues. I can’t see a share issue to being too successful though to be honest. The City was burned last time and the fans historicially don’t buy shares, although recent developments might suggest they are little more organised this time.”

The semi final you mentioned was at Hampden. It was the day after Hillsborough and was a Sunday.

Think they would get a straight fee for the use of the stadium, the 4 teams split the ticket money after deductions HH

Macjay, he may be a relation if he is from Glasgow but he is not known to me. Have a fine day out there in Oz.

Is there any news about Tom and his family situation?

Best wishes on your birthday. Would like to draw your attention to an article written by Michael Rosen, (albeit on the loss of his son), the Guardian 14 January 2014. Your memories of your Mother reminded me of his writing.

  11. For the day shift.

There was a follow up Open Meeting last night at which Celtic’s response to questions asked at the previous meeting were diseminated and discussed.

The answers ran to 7 pages and it would take the same to document the discussions that followed.

I understand it will all appear on the CST web site idc but there is a lot of ground to cover so it might be a day or two.

  13. Morning Bhoys & Ghirls,

Efe Ambrose has been reported as saying that the whole team deserves some credit for Fraser Forster’s consecutive clean sheets record, and this is indeed the case as it is a team game.

I did however have a look at the team line-ups from the games in the current record breaking run. right from the second half of the Aberdeen (301) game, and I will post details of my findings this evening.

The headline news from that analysis is that as well as Fraser Forster, Emilio Izaguirre and Virgil van Dyjk have also played every minute of this amazing run Efe Ambrose has just missed out on the same accolade, having been substituted in the 87th minute of one of those matches.

Stability, as well as quality in defence is the key.

    More later…

    Happy Birthday.

I have only been to Stamford Bridge once and that was for a start of season friendly between us and Chelsea at the start of the Strachan era.

It was one of the most frightening and horrible experiences I have encountered at a football ground.

A Police escort was required from the tube station and chants of “IRA B******rds” ” Hang the murdering B*******rds” with bottles being thrown and all sorts of other abuse outside the ground.

Inside was not much better with a lot of English voiced Celtic fans being equally vociferous though not as lothesome shouting back at the taunts and to be honest rising to the bait.

I have a pal in Norwich who lived in London for a while and he cites the Bridge as the most horrible football atmosphere in Britain in his opinion.

I would concur on the evidence I saw.

  19. Doubting Thomas on

Good article on Wee Pat, looks as if he was set up big style, they almost got away with it with Jim Spence, who’s next on the list, Stuart Cosgrove ?, they won’t be happy at HQ until it’s full of the lamb gang, dodds, young , smith etc.

  20. It’s all getting getting rather busy over at thems place, short of sword swallowing, tight rope walking, jugglers, acrobats, and paint facing, there’s a lot of ducking and diving going on, there seems, well to me anyway, a slow drip feed that the fans can buy this club, as I have said I think it will pan out, RIFC or TRFC taking the hit, and what ever one takes the lead invite the fans to buy into a debt free club, I think that was the process, but Craigieeeeeeee Bhoy has entered the ring at this circus and is starting to crack his whip, and it looks like this has taken away the net from the trapeze artists for the final act of this circus, and and us Tim’s are getting board with. It, send in the clowns.

Thanks for that info re sale and lease back.

I could see the sense in it when it was first suggested here a year or two back as the most likely outcome. However with the state they are in I was wondering who the assets would be sold to, who would raise the money to pay the price.

At the end of the day there is only one source of real income and that is ticket money so why sell and lease back when you can just take the rent equivalent from that same source anyway?

Such an arrangement only serves to put clear distance between those running the football club and the landlord renting the stadium.

That looks like a deck chairs on the Titanic job to me as the cost of using Ibrox has to be paid for anyway and that could be met by reducing costs elsewhere.

Either that or the tenants just walk away, play elsewhere and accept downsizing.

Its not too much love that kills you, it is letting go the attachments formed as a result.

    Oh well.

  22. Morning all

Won’t contribute to ongoing debates re prospect of Scottish Independence ( for it), Gay Marriage ( basically for it) or Pat Nevin interview ( haven’t been able to get mag to download ).

But we have a big cup tie on Saturday to look forward to . From an imprecise scan of the memory banks and Glasgow Celtic 1945- 1970 * we seem to have not beaten the Dons at CP in the Cup since 1951. Which seems an incredible fact but I believe it to be the case.

Disappointed that even with cheap tickets that crowd doesn’t seem likely

to be more than 40000 for a game between two sides in decent form and , even before last Saturday, a wee bit of needle in the air.

Such, as the fella Kelly said, is life

  23. Re LG being eligible for Saturday, C& P`d this from The Mail, by Frank McAvennie, so 2 sources I wouldn`t trust, but heigh ho…..

    ============================

Asking Frank McAvennie to dispense advice on how to remain circumspect away from the park is a bit like asking Keith Richards how the detox plan is going. It seems utterly pointless but it strikes you as good fun all the same.

On the basis that it takes one to know one, however, the most loveable rogue to have earned a crust at Celtic Park in many a long year might just be worth listening to as far as Leigh Griffiths is concerned.

Former Hibs and Wolves player Griffiths, who’s poised to make his debut in Saturday’s Scottish Cup tie of the round against Aberdeen, was unveiled as a Celtic player on deadline day amid such a blizzard of questions about his private life that it’s a wonder he was able to put pen to paper.

Happy birthday to Sean Thornton. Also my bday today but I’m trying to ignore the tune in my head about the sun being the same in a reletave way. Naturally grumpy I suppose.

Got a reply from JP Taylor last night about my complaint regarding the ST discount.

Thank you for your email, I will need to pass this one to our Ticket Office for details of why this is the case, I know that we have generally worked to a closing date for ST Holders to buy at a preferred rate and can only assume that the limited flexibility relates to a system issue but I’m sure the Ticket Office will clarify.
