Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

Will be interesting to see how vigorously SFA insider, Petrie, defends his club’s interests in LNS2.

  10. Not long back from CP, i haven’t felt a buzz like that in the ground since the MON days.

A crowd turned up that was just shy of the recent morton home game attendance.

I can’t wait for the new season to start, i feel there could be some great times ahead with Brendan in charge. I will be surprised if we don’t sell 50k season tickets for the new season.

    Happy times.

My mate was at Parkhead today . He was in tkt office to renew and asked how ST sales were going to the girl behind the counter.

She stated since Brendan was announced on Friday the office has been mobbed and said we are easily heading for 50k ST sales.

If that’s the case then that is fantastic

  14. The extra season book sales will well cover Brendan’s wages, the extra £10 mill that Pedro said we were losing with no huns will pay for getting rid of some of the squad with a few bob left over, so the £15 mill that Brendan was supposed to have been promised will in reality only cost the club half of that.

    Feckin cheapskates…..

See this running a footy club, easy :-)

    hola

mark mcghee was appointed today, warmly met by a crowd of KenJ and a dug,

the 2nd rangers won the cup after hibs has stokes and mcginn sent off in the 1st minute for taking kick off in a feniany manner, they won 1-0 with a 89th minute penalty.

the rangers fans celebrated their culture with a sing song praised by the scottish government. then invaded the pitch and celebrated further by burning an effigy of neil lennon.

mark warbuton has now been nominated for a knighthood.

    a glorious treble.

dave king has also accepted a position on the scottish league ethics commitee.

    other than that, its quiet

    Here, here …..Paul67

If we were to need .that lot to survive, then we would not be in a ‘good place’….. Our Board let me down badly by obviously wanting them back, even if only for commercial reasons. However, Dermot Desmond and Peter Lawell need to be sincerely congratulated for convincing Brendan Rodgers to come to Paradise….come what may, they have delivered big time ….I was there today, and circa 15,000 delighted Celtic supporters gave Brendan a welcome he will NEVER forget……HH

The one good t,hing for me is that I will never ever enter the same stadium as that lot again, since I refuse to subject myself to their RANSID bile / hatred / sectarian bigotry EVER AGAIN..

  20. Not long back from the welcome Brendan show.Really enjoyed a great Celtic afternoon/Early evening in Paradise. Brendan spoke very well and obviously gets Celtic and what it means to the supporters. Hopefully the season ticket sales will go above the 50000 mark and we can start moving forward again. The Sevco games will sell out and will add revenue, prestige and interest to the Scottish Game. Sadly these are the facts that we have to live with.I would like to think the Board are still looking to pursue a new football environment. Recent talk of expanding the English leagues must be looked at.Apart from the last very poor managerial appointment moving to a new league is the main area the board have failed in thus far.

As for season books? Everyone I know wants one now. Some are concerned they might not be able to due to demand.

  24. When Brendan mentioned Tommy’s name, their was a spontaneous roar from the crowd that had me in tears.

Like many on here Tommy is my all time favourite Celt, my last and enduring memory of him was him diving headlong into a pile of celebrating players after The Holy Goalie had saved the last penalty in a shoot out against Spartak Moscow in 2007. The celebration took place right in front of where I was sitting and I can still see Tommy making that dive,

Just 9 months later he was taken from us but he will never be taken from our hearts.
