Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

if celtic could sell season books right up to the small away section, then that would be brilliant,

then when the monkey zombies come they only get 1800 tickets (or better still none)

I renewed as planned today. Lady indicated that it had been very quiet but had picked up a lot since Friday. Let’s hope that she is kept busy from here on.

Brendan likes a small squad with backup from the youths. Music to my ears.

  3. Corkcelt – Spot on. a fantastic player, a diehard fan, a gentleman and a terrific coach and man-manager all wrapped up in one. No Celtic team in my memory was better to watch than the one Tommy managed.

His death due to recurring melanoma happened just a few weeks after I lost my sister to the same cancer. They were the same age too. If Tommy had stayed healthy I would have hoped he would have had another chance to manage Celtic. He would not have let us down.

Just glad that we were not involved on Saturday.

    =========

We might still get the blame , however.

  5. Spare a thought for the poor Negatonians, Bhoys, it’s their blog too. They must be getting withdrawal symptoms, lurking and nae posting until they can seize on a bit of bad news but they haven’t gone away you know, there is no silver lining without a dark cloud. They are biding their time but they will be back.

  6. Couldn’t make today but glad so many could. Watched it all on the fantastic Celtic media channels. That’s the future that. Didnae think we had our own media channels. Take it the s*n wasn’t available for an exclusive?

Like how BR spoke about the youth, smaller squad and balance between ready made and your own. I remember a certain Norwegian speaking about that as well.

The feeling that we are now out the slow lane is growing. I may have company in the LL upper next season. Will take great pleasure in asking them where were you since rangers died?

    Kidding off course.

  7. Loved that today. Went to the press conference with Paul and took up position within the hacks – a dirty job but someone has to do it.

It involves plenty of waiting around and general football chat.

The story in the Scotsman that The Rangers board disrespected DD at the semi final seems

to have substance. Thus a decision taken to invest heavily and push the boat out.

They seem to like upsetting billionaires.

To be fair it was some goal that they scored in the second half at Hampden. Worthy of winning the Cup Final even and opening up the stadium to the celebrating support – ones at the game and others watching in pubs and at home.

It would be both arrogant and foolish of those supporters working at the game to have ordered a significant slice of the available stewards to head on over to ago an to prepare the place.

After all the world beaters had their name on that cup.

Oh dear. Not to worry though the next Nimmo Smith character can begin the independent enquiriy on the 94th minute rather than 10 minutes earlier.

Their big advantage last Friday morning was that their fans were mobilised and ready (!)

    We were arguing among ourselves.

Now Celtic have sorted that with a little taster thrown in from Miss Karma.

    Brendan is the real deal.

I said to Paul that the main stand wouldn’t be big enough. He gave me that look that says he thinks your daft and said CELTIC were expecting two or three thousand.

    They got 12,000.

I got fed up with the fat cats and headed down to join my boy two rows behind the CELTIC dugout.

The atmosphere was fantastic. I exchanged tweets with our own James Forrest – telling him it was time for him to come home to Paradise.

Celtic have given him everything he has yearned for.

    He agreed.

Leigh Griffiths appeared and rolled his eyes and smiled when asked if he had had a good weekend.

Brendan spoke well at the press conference but I think he was amazed at the scale of that reception from an enthusiastic support.

I’d rather he called us Celtic rather than Glasgow Celtic but that aside he was flawless all day.

The broadcast media weren’t snidey or hostile and he was polite but never over eager to please these people – something they exploited Ronny on.

Dave King has had a very bad week, even his most sellable player was roasted in the final by a Celtic squad player on loan.

    His response is JOEY BARTON.

Ours is Brendan RODGERS and here we go.

    TEN IN A ROW!

  8. See you still get 2 tkts for a game during the season.

HOW will that work if we get >50K season tkts ?

Never used mine last year on my two books

  9. Winning Captains

I’m with you ,’Glasgow’ Celtic constrains us …’World’ Celtic mair like us.hh

  10. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

I am very lucky to be in a position to buy a season book,I am literally sitting waiting on Celtic getting in touch,I’ve never had one before but most fholk know I’ve been on these pages for years and now I feel it’s time to step up to the plate,I don’t know the good and bad places for a view,I don’t really care,as long as I know I’ve did my bit.

  11. After closing date Friday, Area 143 Row P seats 22,23 & 24 will be available. The boys aren’t up for it and I’m opting to save cash as we’ll be down to 1 wage while my wife does teacher training.

    I’ll be back before long.

  12. WINNING CAPTAINS on 23RD MAY 2016 9:14 PM

Any suggestion that Celtic might now be prepared to take a public stance on the same club narrative?

  13. So what did the Ibrox board do to upset DD at Hamden? Did they intentionally wind him up, swear at him, partake in anti-Irish singing? Someone on here must have been in the posh seats. Spill the beans.

  14. Brendan’s reply when asked about Stevie G “That didn’t take long. He’s happy in America with his family.”

He reckons it will take a couple of weeks to sort out his back room staff. Still a place for John Kennedy? Defensive coaching hasn’t been great.

Big Yogi would be a good number 2 along with his defensive knowledge but I cannot see it as Brendan will have his own ideas regarding assistants.

Stevie Clarke was on the Chelsea coaching staff from 2004 -2008 as was Brendan, just saying like.

  15. If you build it they will come …

Good to see that DD (billionaire formerly known as the Irish Raj) has got his mojo back.

Great start to the growth agenda that we have been crying out for.

No more bonus driven sticking plaster.

Full on drive to what we can be — best endeavours scared of no-one.

Not a crawl to collapse over the finish line.

Interesting to see where we are come 1st Sept.

  16. GreeninbingleyinOslo on

I don’t have any problem at all with “Glasgow” Celtic.

We are Celtic, and we are from Glasgow.

    I am proud of both.

  17. Next season could be a re-run of MON’s first season.

A domestic treble would do nicely.

With the added bonus of CL qualification.

    Settle for that.

    HH!!

  18. Brendan was asked about his assistant, whether it would be a Celtic minded or someone who knows Scottish football..he pretty much dismissed that notion so I don’t expecta John Hughes type appointment.

He’ll bring his own men it. Maybe Gerrard will see Celtic as a stepping stone to management?

He’s been at a few Huns games supporting the Bhoys sitting close to us in the main stand in the past.

  19. I thought Brendan and Stevie G had a falling out before they both left.

I’d prefer a proper coach as 2nd in command.

  20. The Sevco directors must have really pissed Dermot off at the semi final.

I read some of their directors were in tears at the end, the rest of them must have been singing along to the BB with the other 25k sevvies.

Whatever they done , it certainly worked.

    Thank you Dermot Desmond.

  21. CORKCELT on 23RD MAY 2016 8:53 PM

Like you Tommy was and will always be my all time Celtic Hero.

I recall being in the Kings Theatre, part of Peter Grant’s Testimonial celebrations. It was Peter’s Party Night. Tommy knew he was out on the way out, he stood on the Stage and sang the greatest love of all…the words…they can’t take my dignity away…well I lost it, a grown man walking out the Kings in tears, not Tommy but me…

God Bless you Tommy, thank you for being you…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  22. Cancel the positivity and the optimism, slow down the season boom buying frenzy – twitter rumours that joey ‘the midfield general’ Barton has decided to join Sevco.

Barca, both Madrid teams and man United said to be devastated. Dermot Desmond has no idea what to do next.

Me? I’m pmsl as the young ones say……

Joey Feckin Barton and a bonkers press release! Hilarious stuff…..

  23. pogmatonyahun

No real debate to be had. The stars aligned, Brother Walfrid read the runes.

Could not ever been a City other than Glasgow.

    Or another Celtic Football Club.

  24. Celticrollercoaster supporting Shay, our bhoy wonder along the way on

    Good Evening

Wow 12,000. Shame I could not make it to Paradise today. Hope you enjoyed it Bhoys!

    Let the good times roll

Love the smile, Brendan that is pure going to wind the dead ones up!

One hand on the cup and then they sang Cheer up Alan Stubbs.. and bhoy he did…
