Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

In 1972 the huns invaded during the match, when their team was on the ropes. Moscow had just scored to make it 3-2 and they were dead in the Catalan heat.

The respite allowed them to see the game out.

    YOUR COMPLAINT:

Complaint Summary: The vile sectarian singing from rangers supporters

Full Complaint: I think it’s shocking that all the BBC can talk about is the pitch invasion at Hamden on Sat. Having said that I do agree this is not acceptable in today’s modern game, but as for to leave out the sectarian bile songs, that lets not beat about the bush here came from The Rangers fans I find it unacceptable and beyond the pale that this behaviour has just been swept under the carpet. You the BBC have an obligation to the rest of your viewers to highlight these things as not acceptable in any way, form or manner, you have voice bites there that should be sent to the proper authorities and be dealt with accordingly, I’m hoping this will be looked and dealt with in a professional way, and thank you for taking my complaint.

Another kite being flown by some media……. when the old Rangers invaded the pitch in Barcelona then the old Rangers were banned from Europe competition and so now that Hibs invaded the pitch then Hibs should be banned from next Scottish Cup competition

    ———

Taking a wild guess here but I imagine they were up in arms at how unfair that was. So presumably they would see it as being unfair now too!

“The end of the contest was overshadowed by a pitch invasion by hundreds of Rangers supporters one minute before the final whistle, which held the game up for several minutes.[1][3] In the sixties and seventies it was common to see pitch invasions at matches, including European finals.[5] At the time Spain was still under political oppression by fascist dictator Francisco Franco and revolts were violently repressed by armed Policía Armada (Armed Police).

While it was argued that the pitch invaders may simply have been celebrating victory prematurely due to the misinterpretation of the final whistle (the referee had blown for a throw-in) the Dynamo Moscow team believed that the pitch invasion was a calculated action by the fans designed to stop the Soviet side’s momentum.[3][6] In the final minutes, Dynamo were pressing hard to equalise but the sudden pitch invasion gave the Rangers defenders respite.[6] Colin Stein later reflected on the game and stated that he believed the pitch invasion made it harder for the Rangers side during the final minutes of the game.[7] Dynamo players claimed that they were attacked during this invasion,[6] while bottles were thrown at police, whose actions have been described as heavy-handed.[1]”

Hibs ban from Europe would not mean that Sevco would get in. Hibs won the cup and it was decided many years ago that the runners up would not get a European place if the winners were already in Europe. The extra place would got to the next placed Premiership team. Likewise if the winners are barred, then the next place Premiership team would get their place.

However if the Cup was to be stripped from them after a “breach of football regulations” that would invalidate the result and by default the European place awarded to the cup winners would be awarded to the other finalists of the voided qualifying game. Hmmmm

It’s the old one of starting out with the outcome and working back to find a way of getting there.

Supposing Hibs made clerical registration error or some other rule infringement.

    What would be the outcome?

A fine, or a reversal of the result? Or both?

    Any sporting advantage gained?

Would that then mean….ach, you know where I’m going with this, don’t you?
