Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

“It is to be hoped all of Scottish football will share Rangers’ disgust and any attempts to attach blame to our supporters for the disgraceful and violent behaviour, which led to our players and fans fearing for their safety, will not be accepted or tolerated by this club”

Calling all Celtic fans in and around Tranent, a win for Celtic 17s tomorrow v Hibs clinches the league, 7.45pm kick off.

  8. Well said Paul.

Our association with the dead club did our image and reputation nothing but harm. The interest the outside world had/has in the O** F*** game is no different to the interest respectable Victorians had in fairground freakshows.

No one outside Scotland watched us play them for the football. It was only ever out of curiosity to see if the tribal tensions spilled over into violence off and on the pitch. Then they’d “ooh” and “ah” in mock disgust while secretly loving every minute of the tawdriness of it. That’s what our rivalry with Rangers always was. Tawdry.

Many fans of provincial teams refer to us and them as “the Ugly Sisters,” and that’s essentially what we always were to fans outside of Scotland too. We came as a pair. Two sides of the same coin. And we as a club and a fanbase were tarnished by that. The bigoted Catholics to their bigoted Protestants.

The past four seasons without them in the top league have been fantastic. It’s been all about the football and I’ve never known that in my life before. There’s also been a sense of togetherness about football fans all over the country since they died in 2012.

It united all of us against Rangers and their various franchises, with their bigotry, arrogance, aggression and threats that we saw all too plainly again over the weekend.

Saturday shows the kind of thing we can expect to return next season when they “come back.” It’s the only thing they can bring back about the old Rangers.

Those pining for the old days need to realise they ain’t ever coming back. The “strong Rangers” we had since 1986 was an illusion built on financial doping, tax-dodging and cheating. As a force under their own steam, they were destroyed by Jock Stein.

In the 20 years before Stein’s appointment as Celtic manager, Rangers won the league 10 times to our one.

In the 20 years after Stein’s appointment, they won the league 3 times to our 14.

Then they started throwing other people’s cash around with the appointment of Souness and even then that only gave them a decade or so of domination before we got our act together again in the mid/late 90’s.

In reality, we haven’t actually had “a strong Rangers” for 50 years or more. They’re not coming back now. All they will bring to the game is what they have always brought – cheating, bigotry, and mayhem.

We don’t need them and never have.

  10. I can understand and respect Paul’s views, I thought the same when they died. But the rollercoaster of emotions you experience when we come up against a club from the Parish of Govan is something that almost all of our players, former players and managers say is unbeatable. It is box office. Beating them or losing to them were the ultimate highs and lows most of our fans experienced in the domestic game for the previous decades. I have no doubt the same will be true once again.

To enjoy those games, to revel in victory and despair in defeat is hard-wired into most of us. The horrible baggage that comes with it turns all of our stomachs. I have nothing but respect for those of us who would be happy never to see any kind of Rangers again, it’s clearly a popular view on here. But 10s of 1000s of the Celtic support think otherwise and will be jacked up on adrenaline as the first SPFL fixture between the clubs looms. A large chunk of the 55,000 who filled Celtic Park during the MoN era and who have since drifted away will now be dusting off their scarves and pencilling in games to go back to watch.

Quite simply, our games with “the Rangers” will be what the majority of our fans, our players and manager will most look forward to in the coming seasons. No matter how much we would like it to be otherwise.

I would bet right now that traffic on the CQN website during domestic fixtures will peak whenever we are playing them.

Wanting to stuff them at every opportunity is in my DNA. They are a horrible institution that continues to be the focal point for the lowest dregs of our society but wishing them away isn’t going to make it happen.

So for 90 minutes once every 2-3 months we can hopefully destroy their morale and inbred superiority while once again seeing our beloved Celtic benefiting from serious competition and gaining the edge that we had a decade ago when Celtic Park was a fortress and the best clubs in the world worried about coming there.

The alternative? Being happy they are dead while losing to Maribor and Malmo in front of a half-empty stadium and struggling to win leagues and trophies against clubs with a fraction of our resources. I’ll take the former and live in hope that as the years pass the Rangers will slowly be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

The last 4 years were an opportunity to move the club onto a different strategy. We failed on that due to the experimental approach to manager and player recruitment.

The champions route to the champions league is an open goal we failed to exploit. I’ll still be a Celtic supporter in the morning Paul but my disdain for Rangers extended to the need to move our strategy demonstrably to being a European competitor rather than a youth development side. A European journey was there for the taking with the right manager in place and the pressure off domestically. A brief sojourn in the Champions League followed by a few Europa rounds is not beyond the size of our club. Instead we sold assets to fill a perceived minimum turnover – the Rangers void. You can’t help but feel it’s a missed opportunity.

Now we will fill the stadium again and look to have appointed the right manager.

We don’t look to have tried too hard to demonstrate we could survive on our own means. We have and would continue to do but the lack of innovation and downright risk aversion has left me suspicious of some people’s ability to move the club forward.

I can forgive and forget and today’s as good a place as any to start.

We never progressed last few seasons to the Celtic board pursuing the wrong strategy in terms of team management and player recruitment, beating the present club playing out of the parish of Govan will not guarantee us success in Europe, that will be earned by good management and player recruitment, Big Jock gave us truths that still hold true today, you only get two now three points for a win over them

Despite Traynor’s long association with media – where he will have been steeped in a ‘if you feed enough rope – eventually folk will hang themselves’ culture – he ain’t half pulling the rope in… And if he hasn’t already, will eventually hang himself (metaphorically off course)….

Apparently salesmen are the easiest people to sell too.. Must be same with Scottish media journalists when it comes to keeping a story going?

I actually think Rangers will be a great thing next season.. Even though Celtic are and will be top of the tree and really should be the team clubs want to beat most.. I expect Rangers will be the team opposition teams/ fans most want to pump. They are quickly assuming pantomime villan status …
