Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

Welcome to Scotland Brendan. Just watched the press conference. We’ve attracted a manger who was voted manager of the year two years ago in the EPL and the negative questioning by the MSM was hunbelievable. Why am I surprised?

  6. I have to admit to not knowing much about Mr Rodgers but I am enjoying his interview seems a decent humble football man and a Celt:))

Looking forward to the new season:)

  7. Is he now doing the written press conference? and will this be aired live por cierto?

  8. My overriding sentiment from the gutter hacks is that they are desperate to talk Scottish football down at every chance.

My cynical side would suggest that they are serving their paymasters by attempting to divert attention to the english game. Turn people off to any possible competition to their bloated, media driven monster.

Thanks I am watching that. I was wondering if after the Celtic TV interview they are going to show that press conference por cierto.

  10. No Bobby Does It Petta on

Actually took a riddy for Bankier. That awkward silence after his attempted humour about digital cameras ????

  11. Nobody in the press asked Brendan about the challenge of “ranjurs”. I wonder have they realised that there isn’t one! lol

  12. The mSSm are to a man are negative nellies and holy wullies.

Brendan refused to give oxygen to them.

He constantly stated he has joined one of the worlds biggest clubs much to their discomfort.

Smart man kept the agenda on Celtic.

  13. Never mind the players, after listening to that I’d run through a brick wall for Brendan.

    Humble guy.

    Feel the passion.

I listened to shortbread news on the way home there. They are really on message, hibs fans invaded the pitch and clashed with rangers supporters while assaulting several rangers players. No mention of the role of the sevconians in the fracas.

  17. Brendan seems to be the right man at the right time. Don’t like to criticise but Bankier was ill prepared and unprofessional at the opening of the media conference.

  18. Very impressed with Interview. Liked him saying he prefers to work with a smaller tight squad and to give the youngsters a chance. Missed the bit about his response to Asst Manager question. Obviously he was never going to reveal too many cards at opening press Conference but in general I liked what I heard.

Used the delay in the press Conference starting to book my Ticket for the Barca match. There are single tickets available in most areas but only 2 or 3 blocks left where you can buy a couple together. I reckon it’s 95% plus booked out, so anyone thinking of going would need to get going on it @ Ticketmaster.ie.

Celtic players will be like steel next season.

    Sevconia will be in meltdown:)

  20. I think the press conference was pretty tame, no questions that I would not have anticipated particularly maybe regards his budget but he handled all of it very well.

Welcome to Celtic Brendan, I hope all who are at Celtic Park have a great early evening! Jealous I cant be there!

Following statement yesterday attacking Hibs, the SFA, Motherwell, a BBC journalist not at the match, and the First Minister, The Rankers have issued another statement against Celtic TV, YouTube, Big Summers, Brendan and … everybody!

“Stoap it! Stoap it! It shows us in a bad light !!! Jist stoap it, right!”.

Wishart Fraser, the chief executive of PFA Scotland, added his voice to the The Rankers call for Celtic to stoap it.

    Welcome to Celtic, Brendan.

Very impressed with the interview. Quiet steel.

I think we have got the real deal here.

    Excited? Just a bit.

  24. The positive hack Mark Sidebottom (the one who wished Brendan every success) is from BBC NI He came from Waterfoot so practically a neighbour of Brendan. Not too often you will hear that in a Celtic presser. Mark also had/has an affinity with Celtic. Don’t know whether he has lost the love since he started to work with the BBC. Don’t think he would have got a job in BBC Sevco.
