Contagion from omnishambles, welcome Brendan

664

Let’s be clear about this, there are Celtic fans who believe we need a club called Rangers to survive in the manner which we’ve all become accustomed to over the last couple of decades. That without them, we will wither on the vine.

Some of this is correct. In the years following the liquidation of Rangers we lost TV, commercial, mechanise and season ticket income. We play in a league with significantly less competition, which blunts players’ edge and makes Celtic Park a less attractive place to play or be a spectator.

The important question for Celtic fans is what do they actually want from their club? I’ll cope when we were only a few points ahead of Aberdeen, or getting knocked out of the League Cup by Ross County, while being eliminated from Europe by increasingly obscure teams. I’ll still be there supporting my team.

I accept that not everyone will, some of us want the edge of your seat tension – and that’s all right. But I’d ask anyone who pines for the old days to consider the omnishambles of a football team we glimpsed over the weekend. There was no wonder era in the past when we benefited from a great rivalry without destructive contagion.

They were never good for us. Whatever about Celtic is dependent on them is not worth having.

This afternoon we welcome our new manager, Brendan Rodgers, to Celtic Park for the first time. This morning I recalled Ricky Fulton’s words in the video clip below, “It only remains for me to welcome you to the club, Brendan.” A different club, of course, but there’s a morality tale within.

  1. MAYANMAN, I don’t know where you have been but I have been clear on the subject of Celtic not needing Rangers since first explaining in some detail in October 2011 (see link below). Any other thought is a figment of your imagination.

What’s more I was briefed before writing the piece below by “sources close to the club” and can assure you that they were in firm agreement. I could elaborate, but it would be inappropriate.

” Authentic frontier gibberish” should go hand in hand with any future Sevco statements

  7. LIONROARS67 – True as far as league points go it is of no more value than beating Kilmarnock. But ask Barcelona fans if 3 points for a win over Real Madrid FEELS the same as 3 points for a win over Getafe. Ditto Liverpool fans against Man Utd etc. etc. The emotional high of beating your bitterest rival is one of the key ingredients that makes sport so important in millions of people’s lives. Memories of the 6-2 game which I attended with my dad will long outlive any thumping of Ross County or Motherwell. I couldn’t have been higher that day if you had given me crack cocaine.

Sporting success gets boring if their is no edge to it. All sport thrives on the tension that comes when their is a gladiatorial collision. Ali vs Frazier, Lewis versus Johnson, Yankees vs the Red Sox, Borg vs Lendl, Nicklaus vs Watson, Good vs Evil etc. etc. If there is no great rivalry then the passion ebbs away.

I think that is the reason almost all of our ex-players and managers have repeatedly said that Celtic need Rangers in the league. Without that rivalry everything becomes a bit mundane. A bit pedestrian. A bit predictable.

They’ll die again. Unless a genuine multimillionaire who’s actually prepared to lose money comes in. Why do I say that? Well they can’t support the infrastructure they have on their current income. If they live within their means they’ll not challenge consistently, fans will leave it’s ever diminishing returns. I see their decline as inevitable.

So we need to make new rivalries.

  9. Sorry for the “theirs” instead of “theres”. Once was careless, twice, deary me.

  10. Think John Hughes would be a good addition to Brendan’s backroom team, yogi’s got terrific enthusiasm out on the training pitch, seen that first hand, he has good footballing principles, knows the SPL teams, knows Celtic and he is available, IMO its a no brainer

  11. My friends in Celtic,

The only interest I have on events last Saturday is how any consequences affect Celtic and our supporters.

Personally the biggest sporting story over the last week happens today at Paradise. How I wish I was in Glasgow today.

    Hail, Hail.

    Hi Paul,

Hope you don’t mind me reposting this from yesterday:

Unfortunately due to family circumstances we are no longer able to go on our week-long trip to see Bruce perform in Manchester, Dublin and Glasgow therefore I have tickets to sell for each concert:

Only 5 tickets left now for Manchester on Wednesday 25th May and they are all Pitch Standing tickets and face value is £83 each. (These are hard-copy physical tickets.)

The 6 tickets I have for Dublin are for Friday 27th May, and are seated together in the Lower Cusack, Section 309, Row CC so they are a great view. Face value is 137 Euro, or £105, per ticket. (These are e-tickets.)

The 6 tickets I have for Glasgow on Wednesday 1st June are all Pitch “East Standing” tickets and face value is £83 each. (These are hard-copy physical tickets.)

    I am happy to:

    1. Meet you with the tickets

    2. Post them recorded delivery to you

    3. E-mail you the Dublin e-tickets

If we don’t meet in person then I am happy to trust you to transfer me the payment either AFTER you have signed for the recorded delivery envelope or, with the Dublin e-tickets, AFTER have attended the concert. (Unusual I know, but I believe that in this CQN community I would be safe to trust people to pay me once they have used the tickets and it’s better than not being able to sell them at all.)

Please do let me know if you are interested in any of these tickets as you’d be doing me a huge favour.

    Thanks,

Thanks for the link, I didn’t doubt that you believed that Celtic didn’t need thems but to me you seemed to back the boards view that we would be better off with them and their bigot pound. Apologies if I have misread you.

Paul67 has ALWAYS to my recollection advocated Celtic don’t need Rangers and that cost benefit analysis for him believes we do not need them.

Lawwell has Solent with forked tongue on this issue. On the one hand our ( the club) strategy not defined by Rangers, on the other their absence creates a £10m deficit. We also significantly downsized in their absence.

For many issues Paul67 and Lawwell speak as one but I don’t think that is the case in relation to ‘old firm’ mentality.

  22. TheOriginalSadiesBhoy on

Can’t go over to Celtic Park to see Brendan unfortunately as I’m going up to Leith of all places to take my grandson back home. I hope you all have a great time. I can’t wait for the new season to see Brendan’s Celtic team. I wonder who he’ll let go and who he’ll bring in.

I’ve had a brilliant weekend with Brendan signing and then Hibs brilliant victory. However, the bleating from the Huns is now annoying me with these ridiculous statements. I want CQN to get back to Brendan and Celtic and to leave the Hibees to bask in their Glory, glory and the Huns to rot in Hell.

  23. CULTSBHOY – LIKES LAWWELL BACK IN HIS BOX on 23RD MAY 2016 2:39 PM

As soon as you look at it, it’s all nothing statements. We may have changed our commercial strategy, so that there are no more joint deals etc but the strategy for financial side of the team totally reflects the income of the club. How can it not? It will have reflected the £10M reduced income (let’s assume that claim was true) and if income increases again it will also reflect that.

    PL master of ambiguity.
