CQN Golf Open knocks it out the park again

1384

We had our 11th annual CQN Charity Golf Open at Aberdour in Fife yesterday and it was another brilliant occasion.  £2000 was raised for good causes, including a local Aberdour need, Tommy Burns’ Charity and the Celtic Foundation.

My thanks to the Joe Miller, who regaled us with tales of Maradona, Jinky and Sugar Roy Aitken.  The buzz he got from playing for Celtic is clear.  The day wouldn’t be possible without Taggsybhoy and BlantyreKev, but it takes an entire crowd to make special nights like this, so thanks to each of you.

This afternoon’s game against Rennes is an important step towards getting the players fully fit but the 90 minutes have to be balanced against the Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.  I expect Ronny will ask the players the burn the flame brightly for a short period, before making lots of changes.

The section about Tommy was really emotional.

Loved his tales about the Centenary season; transfers (Andy Townsend) and John Clark tapping up players impersonating a journalist :))

I was delighted when Billy Stark signed as I had always admired him as a player, he wasn’t an obvious Celtic signing-if that makes sense-but he really added guile, skill and experience to the midfield.

I dont think the sentimental route works,Jordi Cruyf and Paul Dalglish spring to mind,

that apart we already have our own lost boy picking up wages for a level of return that would not get him a game for Morton, not to mention Derk B.

Nice idea but not for me.

I am sure you know Andrew H Smith is a Tic fan. H is a former Celtic View guy and today his readership is not 100% Celtic fans…so we should guve him some licence.

  7. Can well do without a ‘Rangers’ in the top division for yet another year. The atmosphere is so free of the pollution from their vastly bigotted and sectarian fans.

Hurling is an amazing game. These guys go at each other full tilt for 70 minutes. Very physical game. But apart from that the skills on show are top class. Hand eye coordination, plucking the ball out of the air while opponents swing sticks at you ( legimate tactic, trying to knock the ball out of your hand) balancing said ball on the tip of your hurl as you run by opponents who again are swinging sticks at you. It’s just a great sport

I think we both know that the Saturday afternoon kick-off resulted from the efforts of those that came before us, changed days now of course especially in the retail industry, but even so it remains the best time for weekend league and cup football. I note that seven out of Celtic’s first thirteen league matches have already been changed for TV coverage, or in other words a classic example of how to lose fans and alienate supporters.

I can see where y are coming from for sure, but I see in young master Larsson,a real player there. And don’t forget how totally professional his dad is in all parts of life, and for that I really do think we should get him signed up pronto.

Not quite up to Roy Croppie’s tale but nonetheless to lighten the mood, I will share with any interested parties……..Hence the call to JNP………. HT will also know some of the Matthew Kelly mob……….

Ten years or so ago in Dubai, I was invited to a rather select wee Karaoke Club in Emirates Towers. Used to go there for the craic now and again while waiting for V to finish work in the adjacent hotel but given the time of year I had more than a few visitors for the summer. So enquired of Jamal, my Emirati amigo, “OK if my pals come along to the gig?”

For sure F, my friend, Insha’Allah, said my Arab host, any friend etc., etc.,

He had obviously never been to Pollok, Maryhill or Cumbernauld……….. Although (claimed) he had been educated at (a) Dundee University and had actually been to Celtic Park………….

So following a wee wander down town we arrived at the venue; V got away early and we entertained the select guests with our version of Renée & Renato. We had only been together ten years then, so Save your Love etc., …………….but that was before the fun started!!!!

The Bold Bhoys were looking through the songbook for some Rebs or Celtic songs, in Dubai, aye!

Eventually, they decided on ‘You’ll never Walk Alone’………….

So me and V are sitting there taking it all in when the Filipino MC, who was a good friend of ours, announced “and next up are the Skydivers CSC singing You will never Walk Alone”………..The Skydivers story belongs about five years or so previously……..Maybe Butsybhoy can take that up and inform any interested parties!

So up they go, Rockon, Chunkie, Butsybhoy of this parish, Propane, TomTom ( my nephew), Shooey (my bhoy), Wee Joe R, Skateboard Bob, Big M, Malarkey, Waltzer Matt, Petty, et al…………. Apologies if I missed out any of the miscreants………..

Singing Walk On in ‘Eggie language’ (it’s a Pollok thing) all the way through and the Emirati guy next us (waiting on the mic) says “Tha rush yins sing with pashun, eh my friend????”

    Convulsions over, I concurred…….

    Memories………..Jeez!!!

  20. auldheid @ 12:40,

That’s an interesting piece, impractical, unworkable, not far sighted enough but interesting none the less. We (Scottish Football Supporters) need more of this thinking.

It’s impractical because the way the Top English and Welsh Football rights are distributed through a mono/duopoly they are not only maximising their return, they’re nitroed to the hilt. Any changing of the model through multi-distribution channels will see the rights fall to a fraction of their current worth.

Unworkable as he alludes to himself the regionised model doesn’t work. What do you do in London, Midlands compared with East Anglia, South West?

Not far sighted enough, from a technology aspect, IPTV gives you the ability to watch whatever game you want, whenever you want it. (Not to mention his model would be a nightmare from the current piracy issues – why pay for Rotherham when you can get every Man U game for nought?)

But I agree with the basic premise and your take on it. Stop the three to five blackout. People who attend Football matches like 3 o’clock ko on a Saturday. Let them have it whenever possible, whether the match is Televised or not and I think Scotland are in a great position to take advantage of a complete re-think on Televised Football and I total agree with the point that it doesn’t have to have the highest production values, with all the bells and whistles.

How about Scotland’s top two games being Televised live at three o’clock Saturday and Sunday.

Then other games at 12:30 – 13:00 ko.

    Some mid-week/Friday/Monday evening games.

You could certainly cover all the big matches plus over the course of a Season all the regional Clubs.

You could have a dedicated subscribed TV channel with an on demand streaming service. And sell the biggest games to the National Broadcasters.

    Celtic v Aberdeen 15:00 Saturday

60,000 in the Stadium, Celtic supporters tuning in on local TV or streaming Globally. In England and any other Country wanting to take it, the folk with good taste in Football tuning in on their Sky/Virgin/BT Box or watching down the pub. What’s not to like???

  30. Someone asked about long-haul flight recommendations/warnings earlier: unfortunately, I’ve forgotten who (see what happens when you don’t respond right away).

Mrs IC & I have flown twice to Singapore with Qatar Airlines (economy class). The 1st time, 8 years ago, we were very satisfied with the experience: the 2nd time – April this year – we found it less satisfactory. The food wasn’t so good as before + there was some virus in the air-conditioning which took a week+ to shake off. The Mrs reckoned that this time we should have booked “premium economy” (better for sleeping). BTW this year,we were able to fly from Edinburgh with a stop at Doha.

  31. Auldheid,

We discussed this a couple of weeks ago, I thought ending the UK and Ireland closed shop was the way to go, it would allow those outside Scotland to watch any 15:00 kickoff they choose from the SPL, and allow all games to be kicking off at 15:00, it really would annoy sky
