Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes. In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.
Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord. A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming. More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.
UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content. A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:
BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market
Within this market there are winners and losers. The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies. The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.
Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.
I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.
Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago. That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose. The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story? Dave King, or through his PR company?

Tony Gregory was a hero to Dublin. He played the part of an Independent TD to perfection and holding the balance of power in Haugheys government ensured the revitalisation of the centre of Dublin. Quonno: not familiar with that book, and not an avid reader tbh. I don’t read Fintan O Toole much, as WITS has said, he pontificates a lot. He appears to be less controversial now, though.
WITS: Coláiste Mhuire did/does have that ‘prestigious’ reputation but it’s misplaced imho. The student intake represented all strata of Dublin society and areas, it is not fee paying and it didn’t select students on their academic ability. When I attended you were pretty much guaranteed a job in the Civil Service because our ability to communicate as Gaeilge but that came to an end around 1980 when recruitment to the CS was severely curtailed.
I enjoyed my time there, the school served me well. I’m familiar with St. Vincent’s also.

Lustig might be our best RB but he doesn’t play often enough to justify his big wage.
Likewise Matthews will be on a fair package and is unlikely to stay beyond his deal, like others I think that he does not do enough to stop crosses in to the box. I would take the money and give DF a run to see if he can hold down the position
We really need a CF capable of holding the ball up and leading the line on his own.
We also need a proper defensive midfielder for when we play better teams in Europe.
For me NB isn’t a real holding player as he prefers to go forward more and SB although maturing still chases the ball at times. Good teams will exploit these things – we need someone who’s happy closing down players or space the way Lenny did or be a towering presence like big Victor!

I see a lot of people are thinking about using a VPN to watch our games on CelticTV so I thought I would share my experience, as I’ve been doing this since I returned to Scotland last August.
I’ve been using CelticTV for 10 years. It’s fantastic! Tom Boyd co-commenting a lot of the time, a 30 minute show called “The Huddle” every mon-fri, press conferences, u21 games, full game replays etc.
After doing my research I signed up for a VPN called ExpressVPN which looked to be the best VPN albeit the most expensive. After checking the speeds in a few different countries I found Holland & Germany to have the best speeds so I just click on 1 of those and boom, CelticTV! My yearly subscription runs out in July & I’ll change over to “IPvanish as they seem to be just a high quality but 22 dollars a year cheaper. Here’s a link explaining a bit about the VPN’s https://goo.gl/loekom I did try the free VPN’s but you really do get what you pay for and can lose half your internet speed and have your ping go from 16ms to 200ms which is terrible for streaming.
Regarding CelticTV I pay for the premium service £20 a month and get a superb HD stream, only ever getting buffer issues if I’ve to much other programs running on my laptop at the same time.
I used to use a HDMI cable but now have a Chromecast dongle plugged into my tv that costs £30. with this you can connect to your tv wireless from any device, phone laptop ipad etc.
Definitely feels good putting money in Celtic’s coffers rather than Sky, and don’t have to put up with all the unpopular pundits I see twitter & CQN complaining about every week.
