Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

  1. Anyone else think if we get into CL group stages we might get denayer on loan again ?

With VVD getting his move then..

Also seen the Hooper plus 8m for VVD .. I’d take that but would also be looking for add ons.. 1m if Norwich stay up or sell on clause.

8m would be enough for new defender and also another good player.

  2. I’m sports daft.

Used to watch footie, rugby, American footbsll, cricket, the lot…….

Now have time for 1 ting!

So it has to be the Tic

So Celtic – give me a way of taking all the money I presently give to sky and BT (the tv channel, not the mad Kwality Tim!) and give it to you instead in return for 100% Tic tv and I’ll happily do so.

    Hello Doc,

Hope that we can keep both of these ghuys, whom I am certain that we have not yet seen the best of in the Hoops, and not because of any lack of effort on the part of either player.

And young Darnell is a definite talent; I’d like to see him used further forward!

Great season ahead for the Bhoys, and I just can’t wait for it to get started!

  4. Skål, thanks, I will have a look at the information you provided.

I have Sky, they show Celtic games, it’s that simple for me.

But would much rather give Celtic money directly.

I do have Celtic TV, but games not on ’til midnight.

I use Apple, does that make a difference?

Reading your love in with Doc tonight has been heartwarming and not in a gaviscon kinda fashion.

I have a picture in my head of you both holding a pose at edinburgh airport as you await Sammis return.

You both have a tear in your eye. Albeit perhaps for different reasons!

  6. North Cyprus Bhoy, absolutely.

I will be away for the first qualifiers, are they on the ST?

If so, the tickets for me and Miss Doc will be available to a CQNer, or friend of, let me know.

No doesn’t make a difference pal. 1 thing I forgot to mention is that CelticTV don’t have the right to show the European games live, only on demand from midnight. On the other hand you will have a VPN so you can use many streaming websites that are normally blocked in the UK by your internet provider to see those games.

To others who found my post helpful, glad I could help.

I am, and always have been, a fan of the underdog, the wee guy, the bloke with little or no chance.

I too was delighted that Arthur Ashe won that day because to me “Irish Jimmy” was just too brash, too much of the bragart and too much of all that I just didn’t like.

I had watched him blow away Ken Rosewall in 1982 and it was predicted that he would dominate tennis for a decade.

So Ashe winning was all well and good.

However, when I read Days of Grace and started to look into the life or Arthur Ashe I was just so pleased he had won.

This was a guy who was truly phenominal away from the tennis court. He was everything good in a .being and as a sportsman yet he regretted being so controlled and so gentlemanly …. to an extent.

His relationships with Nastase, Connors, McEnroe, Stan Smith and others is worthy of a book on its own.

There is a great book simply called Ashe v Connors and it is truly worth the read.

There are moments when ypu watch something as a spectator when you know that what you are seeing is significant. You might not know why but you just know it is.

The day Arthur Ashe whipped Jimmy Connors was one such day.

Having won in 1972 and having lost to Arthur in 1975, it would take a full decade before Connors would win a second Wimbledon title.

Far from dominating, Fighting Jimmy was releagted to the position of “good but an also ran” compared to McEnroe, Becker, Lendl and the Swedes.

To me he was like boxers such as Tyson and Liston with their huge punches and dominant personality and manner.

However, the great champions are never the ones who dominate and win all the time with an air of invincibility.

The really great guys are the ones who do fall, who do stutter, who do get beaten and who then get up off the canvass and still succeed.

Arthur Ashe knew huge adversity as a black man in a very white dominated sport, however he transcended all race barriers by just being a doggedly good guy and as the years passed more and more people saw that what he stood for was not only decent but also something that everyone should aspire to.

I would love to have met him for a pint, a coffee or a glass of wine just to hear him talk about his life and makong a difference.

I would have enjoyed a chat about sport in general and tennis in particular as well.

  25. CELTIC are eyeing a loan move for Man United kid Saidy Janko.

SunSport understands Hoops boss Ronny Deila has already opened talks to sign the versatile Swiss teenager on a season-long deal.

And his arrival could cast doubt over Adam Matthews’ future, with Swansea among a host of Premier League clubs tracking the Welsh full-back.

It’s understood Janko, 19, had a tour of Lennoxtown on Wednesday as Celtic boss Deila made his move.

He is comfortable anywhere on the right flank and spent the second half of last season on loan at Bolton.

Signed by former United Davie Moyes in the summer of 2013, he has made just one top-team appearance at Old Trafford.

Neil Lennon swooped to take him to Bolton in February and he played ten times, scoring one goal.

With Mikael Lustig, Darnell Fisher and Efe Ambrose also capable of playing right-back, the capture of Janko could leave Celtic open to offers for Matthews.

The Wales star has just a year left on his contract and has no shortage of admirers down south.

Celtic were on Wednesday night closing in on a deal for Manchester United teenager Saidy Janko.

The Switzerland Under 19 international is poised to become Ronny Deila’s second capture of the transfer window following the arrival of Manchester City defender Derdryck Boyata.

Primarily a right back Janko can also play a right-sided attacking role.

A former FC Zurich starlet, Janko’s arrival on a permanent deal comes after reports linked Welsh right back Adam Matthews with a £1.5million move to Queens Park Rangers.

Janko spent the second half of last season under former Celtic boss Neil Lennon at Bolton where he made 10 first team appearances.

The Swiss prospect joined United in September 2013 in a £700,000 deal but saw his first team opportunities at Old Trafford limited despite United U21 boss Warren Joyce saying: ‘He’s certainly a powerful boy. There are a lot of things that he has got to improve on but he is strong, quick and can go past people.’
