Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

    Irishcol,

I remember that moment too our roasting apartment, top floor London.

I also remember clearly Ray Haughton’s goal in the US against Italy.

Changed days, remember they wouldn’t let us give the players a drink of water.

KevJ was extremely positive with his early morning contribution,

    Strange but true :-))

  3. WITS: Re last night’s discussion. I couldn’t agree more about Garrett Fitzgerald. When he died he pretty much received universal praise, unlike Haughey. Fitzgerald’s economic policies were as bad as his Northern Irish and foreign policies. The war in the North would have ended much sooner had he addressed the underlying issues. If investment in Irish entrepreneurs and Irish owned industries had been pursued with as much vigour as foreign businesses we may not have had emigration on the scale it was in the 80s/90s.

Coneybhoy: will try and meet up in the Bad Ass sometime in July. The away leg in the CL qualifying round might be the best for me as I have family coming over from Canada and events still being organised. I’ll let you know in due course. ClogherCelt would be interested and Cathach of this parish might be too.

Just heard a response from Mark Lawrenson, who else; ‘that there a quite a few Championship players in the England team and the result showed that the quality just isn’t there.’

Nothing to do do with the EPL players then!

I think BT will be showing at least one game from each British team in the group stages of CL/EL on free to air tv

  6. TET

Got CTV (£40) – watch games after midnight.

Live Celtic games watch them on ‘ScottishFitBaw’ on laptop (all Sky Football Channels incl EPL) @ £20p.a. Quality is excellent on 15.5″ ThinkPad screen.

Club gets money – Sky doesn’t.

If I could figure out how to connect the App-thingy – I could watch on TV screen!!

Adam Matthews would be no great loss.

Sadly true. Looked a shadow of his former self when he played last season. As he only has one year left on his contract, and if he’s not signing a contract extension then we should be looking to get some money for him this window and get a youngster in as back up to Lustig (he’ll get plenty of game time).

That is what I’m hoping at any rate. Not sure how often ITV showed us over the years, though to be fair they did show some games, but would prefer to show Chelsea etc against anybody rather than us. Latterly of course Sky more or less controlled what ITV showed.

If you get an ISP blocker, you can watch the home games live, or you can go to the game, or the pub, choices, choices.

You will need an HDMI cable to connect to your tele.

Tony Gregory was a person I had a lot of time for. He did his famous” Gregory deal” with Haughey which involved new houses and jobs for Dublin north inner city. When Fitzgerald took power a couple of years later, not only did he not honour the unfinished part of the agreement but he actively sought to undo the completed parts ( like making men who had been recruited by the local authority redundant)

  11. the glorious balance sheet on

I would shed no tears if Adam Matthews is leaving Celtic.

He is hopeless at stopping crosses. He came on as a sub v Maribor and within minutes they had scored from a goal where the move started down his side and we were out the CL. He should have been fresh and charging down the cross, he played as though he was 65 year old with asthma and had played the whole game.

Also appalling weak in selling goals v Zagreb and Inverness (cup semi) where he pulled out of challenges in the box to allow players a free run on our goal.

He offered something going forward against limited SPFL opposition where he linked well with James Forrest but he was never a robust defender. We need better and hopefully Lustig can get and stay fit – he is a far better player.

  12. Ellboy - I am Neil Lennon, YNWA. on

Adam Mathews is only 23 and when fully fit is an asset to our club. For me he’s one to keep!

  13. Whitedoghunch / Dublinbhoy

    Cheers for the replies.

Seriously thinking of subscribing to CTV.

If I did so, and tried to watch live games via ISP blocker as if I were abroad, would the fact that I had registered using Scottish address not void this possibility?

  14. TET

The S/FitBaw site picks up all CTV games (incl those not covered by BT/Sky) – so if you can’t get to a home game you can see it on their site.

  15. Adam Mathews suffered 2 bad injuries playing for us, taking him out for 2 extended periods ( one was an assault, by a Motherwell player)

Yes he was inconsistent last season, when fit

But he is 23, and showed class in his first 18 months with us

It took Izzy time to get back to where he was in his first season, after his serious injury

Adam will get back to form

I would keep – although rumours in Jan he was away

    Hail Hail

In the ideal world he would sign a new deal and come back fit and back to his best.

But if he’s not signing a new deal (assuming he’s being offered one) the it’s time to move on.

Towards the end of last season ,when I seen young darnell fishers name on the teamsheet in front of Adams I was pleased.

in games at home against Partick thistle & Killie I felt they targeted Adam to get at us.

I loved Adams attacking play at times

  19. lennon's passion on

Rumours are like buses they come along all the time. Heard we are getting 12m for Mathews.

  20. WITS: Gregory was a good guy. I went to school in the city centre and even though I was young, the poverty and neglect jumped out and bit you in the arse. Gregory brought about positive change for his community unlike many of the TDs then and since who fed their selfish interests.

  21. tgbs

In the Maribor game, he played when not fit, had been injured, hence came on in 65th minute

In the ICT cup semi, unlucky at first goal or penalty, only defender who back and across to put in tackle, where was our other defenders ?

For the 3rd, had he stuck his foot out, it would have been a penalty

    We can’t always have perfection

I personally believe Izzy is caught out of position more than anyone in our team ? Still love him though

    Hail Hail

  22. Clogher Celt, Almore,

I remember being knackered that day but the buzz at the end couldn’t have been any better . Some great pics that night and I remember persuading a couple of chefs from Dublin to stay on for the quarter final against Italy, as we may never be in this situation again. Sadly could well be right there. Here’s hoping though.

  23. Mrs AoW cleaning out her maws hoose who is now in care home. Comes across my photos from Seville at the bottom of a wardrobe.

Got them developed opened them in that house and never saw them again.

Not sure how I feel about them. A bit of pride at being there tinged with not a little sadness about the trip.

Good photo standing in front of the Govan Bhoys on Tour flag though :-)

Ps for the younger blogger, photos didn’t magically appear on a wee screen that you could then manipulate and send around the world instantaneously. It took great skill and a steady hand to get a good shot but even then you had to wait 36hours to find out if this was, in fact, true.

    Progress eh?

  24. North Cyprus (formerly Baku) Bhoy on

If Adam does leave now, then we’ll have to wonder what we might have seen, if it had not been for the injury caused by Lasley’s unpunished assault! He never regained form after that. Good luck to the Bhoy, if he does decide to move on. HH

  25. Can I also add

If selling Adam and signing a 19 yr old Man Utd reserve, are we saying Fisher is not the answer ?

And extremely confident mikael will last a season ( he is our best right back ) , who has not played a full season yet with us

    Hail Hail
