Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

Do you know if he’s been offered one for sure?

As if that is the case then I agree we should sell him this window.

However I don’t agree with some of the comments writing him off as a player & I think doing so is just a bit silly. Yes he’s been a shadow of the player we know he can be but preferring to show him the door instead of persuading him to stay is a mistake in my view.

On the plus side we do have decent cover for RB.

Lustig again if fit plus Ambrose & Fisher can bith do a job though I’d still prefer we tried all we can to keep him.

Adam has been with us 6 months longer than Mikael

Adam has played 150 games scoring 5 goals – 4 full seasons

    Mikael has played 90 games scoring 7 goals – 3 1/2 seasons

    Hail Hail

Hopefully we have tried to keep him but with RD mentioning today that he wants to cut the squad then I’m not so sure?

We need to be strengthening just now & not weaken our hand going into the qualifiers.

Agree that Adam has always struggled in closing down crosses , massive difference when Mikal is fit …. I’d be surprised if an EPL oufit came calling for Adam , if they do wish him well and on balance he has been a good servant and bloke representing the Hoops

  7. I’d be careful about CTV and IP blockers if you don’t have an account outside the UK and Ireland.

Double check what package you can get, I tried a while ago and found I could only get the domestic package because my payments details were from a domestic bank.

  8. Adam Matthews leaving?

    Boooooooooooooo.

A fine footballer, who given a little time will regain his form after another shocking challenge by Lasley.

I would like to see him stay.

If you want another opinion, ask L. Messi.

I think it took him a day or two to climb out of Adams back pocket in November 2012.

I hope this is one of those non story stories.

  9. WITS: Coláiste Mhuire, Parnell Square. It’s an all-Irish speaking secondary school but it has now moved out to Cabra. The current principal has been to Celtic Park for lots of matches and has also attended the AICSC dinner a couple of times. The school also does an annual soccer tour, usually to EPL matches but they’ve been to Celtic a few times also

  10. Another game at home GMS was having a fantastic game for Dundee Utd on our left ,Adam made sure it all came to nothing with an outstanding display.

no matter what happens I wish him nothing but the best be it with us or elsewhere.

I can see that as well, right hand of midfield, good football intelligence, fantastic athlete, works the channel well, when fully fit

    In my opinion

  12. I have no information on Catman’s post, he usually on the money. If true about Janko is coming in then Adam is likely to leave. I told some of you months ago Adam’s days were numbered. Amongst his Suitors were at the time WBA.

WITS: Gregory was a good guy. I went to school in the city centre and even though I was young, the poverty and neglect jumped out and bit you in the arse. Gregory brought about positive change for his community unlike many of the TDs then and since who fed their selfish interests.

Don’t pretend to know much about Republic’s politics or politicians.

However, as I have posted previously, Fintan O’Toole’s Ship of Fools makes interesting reading.

  16. my take on the Celtic full backs (matthews and Izzy). I love their speed and attacking flair, i cringe when they need to defend!!

#1 priority is defend – therefore they need to be replaced.

I watched Tosh Mcinlay , a very underrated celt, he could defend and he hit hard with attitude ……he could also deliver a wicked cross into the box.

find me that type of player…with just a wee bitty more pace :)

I remember colaiste mhuire well. It was always regarded as a prestigious school because everything was taught through irish. Often wondered whatever happened to it ( as a school) I pass by the building fairly regularly When doing me aul leopold bloom impersonation. ( As in wandering around the streets of Dublin) I was a St Vincents Glasnevin boy meself

  22. Think on this, our full backs are asked to get forward, not occasionally, not when circumstances allow, always.

Perhaps this has something to do with them looking exposed at times?

  26. Doc

As I put up earlier, I think Izzy gets caught out of position more than any of our players

Even though he is a supreme athlete

We will agree for a 2nd time, it’s the way we play

    ( away shaking head :-)))

  27. Henke,

I don’t think it would be a problem…plenty of subscribers travel for work and get access because their IP is not in the UK or Ireland.

A word of warning though…make sure whatever device you are working on has a good broadband and is of a decent quality (good graphics and fast processor).

When posting on CTV Wall don’t mention IP spoofing or VPNs or they will threaten to ban you…they don’t like that :)

    Hail Hail

  28. If you reside overseas or, like me, winter away from home, then Celtic TV is the way to watch all games and support the club financially in doing so by subscription.

You can go a bit further in keeping with Celtic’s charitable ethos by purchasing an Overseas Season Ticket for £250.

An OST allows attendance at up to five home games if in the UK and releases your seat for someone who cannot afford to attend to do so to go in your place.

    Details are at

    http://www.celticfc.net/because/overseas

and its a nice way to support Celtic and fellow supporters if you can afford to do so.

Just as Celtic depend on other clubs to play against, so too do supporters depend on each other for making supporting Celtic that unique experience that binds us together.

  29. CowieBhoy, jeez, stoap it, you’ll end up making sense if you keep agreeing with me!

    Can’t be havin’ that:-)

  30. On Janko. I hear he is a good young player, very quick but quite raw. If we can knock off rough edges he’s a player.
