Cutting the cord: Sky are fostering their own downfall

583

Last week we discussed a Bloomberg article on the increasing availability of premium quality, pirated, broadcast content, made possible by set-top boxes.  In short, products are available to make any amount of premium sports or movie content available to users without subscription, with little the law can do about it.

Quite apart from pirate viewing, subscription broadcast numbers are under pressure from legal streaming services, such as Amazon Instant Video and Netflix, a drift known as Cutting the Cord.  A survey published this week reports that 8.2% of US broadcast subscribers ditched their service in 2014 in favour of streaming.  More significantly, 45.2% of US subscribers report they cut back on content they paid their broadcast supplier for.

UK satellite and cable TV subscribers pay some of the top prices in the world for sports and other premium content.  A dysfunctional market has emerged due to the controlling position of two players:

BSkyB, who dominate subscription TV supply in the UK
The FA Premier League, who own the key content for the UK market

Within this market there are winners and losers.  The winners are English and Welsh football clubs who earn enormous revenues from the FA Premier League TV deal, and subsequent trickle-down monies.  The losers are UK subscribers, who paid a fortune to keep the BskyB-FA Premier League contract in funds, and, of course, Scottish football clubs, who are excluded from the England and Wales league system.

Scotland is 8% of BskyB’s business, significant enough to make a dent in its revenues, but more importantly, if a US-style drift from expensive subscriptions is fostered in Scotland, it will move south soon enough.

I’ve been looking into this since we discussed it last week and will report back.

Shocked and stunned to read in the Daily Mail that Dave King met Sports Direct on the morning of his club’s EGM, as reported by Phil MacGiollaBhain a week ago.  That will explain the lack of denial, I suppose.  The interesting question is: Who gave the Daily Mail the story?  Dave King, or through his PR company?

  1. According to my gutted Hibee friend at work Celtic have triggered another year on Dylan McGeouch’s expiring contract and he will be with us for another 12 months -contract wise anyway.

Dylan is a very able player. He proved at Hibs last year he is ready for first team football.

Is Dylan McGeouch a Celtic first team player under Ronny Deila?

Personally I don’t see it. Can Dylan play a part from the bench?

Of course he can he is more than able BUT after playing almost the full year at Hibs would he want to?

The only course of action I can see with this deal is that we have a bargaining chip with Hibs for Allan.

My Hibs friend agrees and actually thinks McGeouch is the more effective player something we have debated a few times over.

It’s an interesting tact by Celtic though if my Hibs friend is correct.

In my opinion there have been only two Scottish players in the last decade I have seen who can play the defence splitting pass, the killer ball that leaves defenders exposed and a gleeful striker running through to slot past a helpless goalkeeper. Lubo was the master of such a pass.

The two players I have seen consitently provide this type of pass are Ryan Gauld of Dundee United and now Sporting Lisbon who for me is the best prospect in Scottish football I have seen since Paul McStay and the other is the somewhat lazy, languid Scott Allan who reminds me of Paddy McCourt minus the goals but who plays an amazing defence splitting pass with relative ease. If Ronny can get this boy fit and wants to bring him in then this lad could be a very, very good footballer. His choice of club is very important in his development as a footballer. He could do well to review how a former Hibernian players career changed when signing on at Ibrox. Kevin Thompson was an exciting centre midfielder, he was the typical box to box, tackling and goal scoring player in a very young but fluent Hibernian team. He was more cultured and controlled than his midfield partner who was a cheeky gallus boy who scored goals made rash challenges and was as much interested in winding up rivals than winning games.

Mr Thompson chose to go to Ibrox and continue his career there and from what he had shown so far controlling games at Easter Road he was a future Scotland captain as on the field at Hibernian he had shown maturity beyond his years. His firebrand midfield mate decided not to join him and found his own footballing Paradise across the river. Mr Thompson went from a cultured and exciting young lad who looked every inch the modern midfielder to a Barry Ferguson clone and nippy plastic hard man. Unfortunately for Thompson (a player I always thought would be a mainstay in a Celtic side) injuries robbed him of a yard of pace and potentially his best years in football and he now plays for Dundee. Of course we all know how his midfield friend at Hibernian all these years ago has fared.

The crux of this ramble is that Celtic develop players and Bhoys into men. Allan could be a very good footballer. He is a very fine footballer at the minute but he could be top class. Where he goes next will probably determine that. It’s clear that the Hibernian style under Stubbs suits him and he made a huge choice going there knocking back his boyhood team in the process which for any football supporter is a huge call. That tells me the boy has brains.

Where Allan goes in his career is ultimately up to him but putting aside allegiances I hope he plays for a team that play an expansive game and he develops. He has a skill that I believe can;t be taught. Like poaching goals, playing a killer pass that cuts through a defensive like a hot knife through butter is an instinct. It is a skill you are born with and few possess it. To play a style of football that does not make use of this skill is like putting Lionel Messi in goal.

As for our Dylan I’m not sure what to make of the news today on his new 12 month deal but the Hibees appear to want him back and suspect that it could be a make weight for a player who can unlock defences and supply strikers with a ball at their feet with such precision that they could possibly up their goal scoring exploits by 25% per season.

Purely my opinion and I think Allan has work to do but read the jacket of his CV. He is a Ronny player. He has something to prove and increased fitness, training, guidance, 121 coaching this boy could be a very special talent.

    Interesting times ahead.

When I was 6 years old, the sight of Bobby Lennox was enough to leave me in awe of Celtic.

The buzz I got when I watched Celtic run on to the park, still remains to this day.

When I am 56….I will be in amongst the finest supporters in the world, travelling to see the Celtic.

I may complain about PL and the board, but my love for Celtic, will never die.

Hector the Lessor  A bit depressing, however the Rangers Supporters are legion compared with the guys who at present are losing cash. Just remember them, the debt should be repaid eventually.

I have the good fortune to know Bobby Lennox personally and see him now and again around town, an absolute gentleman and a credit to Glasgow Celtic we are lucky to have such a man.

    =============================

I watched Allan closely during the play offs as I heard we had an interest. He was very much less effective than I had witnessed earlier in the season, don’t know if all the paper talk has gone to his head?

I’m wary of Hibs players bummed up by the Scottish press, we’ve had more bad than good from Leith IMHO mate.

To this day I don’t know how we got away with the great Lennoxtown helping hand. Millions of pounds free from the council and SportsScotland.

Well now we do – councillors and Peter Lawwell concocted it in a Knights of St Columbus private celebration in Dublin- where by coincidence PL and Mike Ashley met for the first time. Ashley since became Godfather to PL’s niece. I’m surprised the media hasn’t tried to twist these facts

Firstly, was reading Chris jack in the times and had to stop because I was getting embarrassed, if they swallow all that they are beyond help.

Interesting talk about Sami, really think we need a strong target man type and I liked the look of the boy from fc thun I think but cant remember his name! Serat or something???

Sure someone will help me out, anyway back out to work.
