Dangers of a league without whipping boys

792

At 1:45 yesterday afternoon the prospects of Celtic stretching their lead at the top of the table by the end of the day appeared slight.  The tide has turned in Celtic’s favour in recent weeks but leagues are hard to win and we need only think back to how many chances St Mirren peppered Fraser Forster’s goal with to appreciate the difference between winning games and dropping points.

Teams in the SPL are well organised, even eighth place St Mirren, who are on a run of poor form but apart from a couple of lapses defended well, created more chances than Celtic and played with adventure and confidence.

Celtic are the best team in the league but there will not be a single game before the end of the season in which they will be able to take anything for granted.  The result from yesterday we should pay most attention to is bottom of the league Dunfermline’s 0-3 win at Kilmarnock.  This is a league without whipping boys.

That is a sport I really cannot get into. Wouldn’t watch those teams playing in my back garden t.b.h.

That said I felt much the same about baseball until I attended a few games with relatives in Canada and learned the rules etc. Actually enjoyed it in time.

I also said yesterday that Celtic should make an official complaint. He should not be allowed to officiate in another match involving Celtic.

Absolutely correct about learning the rules, teams etc. That’s what happened with me. Absolutely hooked on it now.

With fourteen SPL matches to play we are averaging exactly two goals a game with an improving defence. Out of sixteen goals lost, nine were conceded in three games, and the last time we lost more than one goal was back in mid-October against the Krankies. So, two goals will ensure victory most of the time. We are doing well, but as Spurs have shown today, that is the time to do better. Like many on here I believe the return of a fit Kris Commons will improve our scoring rate whether Kris scores them or not, though I am confident he will get his share. He is a good Cup player and all, so good timing all round.

  6. Scotpatsfan,

I think the Giants will do it tonight. They have momentum and a will to win – and if you don’t get a lift from winning in Green Bay when do you?

    EDB,

I started watching the NFL more years ago than I care to remember as a fresher in university halls. A few American students explained the game to us and I’ve been hooked ever since. Definitely my second favourite sport

  7. Bournesouprecipe I could be wrong but I do think that palestinians and Israeli Arabs are also semites and therefore you could be anti-semitic towards Kayal.

    Wes Morgan

Born in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, having been rejected by Nottingham Forest’s near neighbours Notts County at the age of 15, Morgan had contemplated abandoning football as a career option, but then the chance came to join Forest, the team he supported growing up.

    Morgan playing for Nottingham Forest:

Following a series of stellar performances in the youth team the central defender made his debut on 12 August 2003 against Port Vale at the age of 19, and throughout the 2003–04 season managed to hold down a place in the first team, playing alongside several partners including ex-England international Des Walker, and Michael Dawson, who also went on to play for the national side.

In the 2007–08 campaign, Morgan was a virtual ever-present in defence, as he helped Forest gain automatic promotion finishing second in the league, as Forest were promoted from League One to the Championship. His only goal of the season came in a 2–0 victory at Tranmere Rovers. Morgan helped Forest keep 24 clean sheets in all that season, the record for the league, helping him secure his first honour of his career.

Although this was so, Morgan found it hard to adapt back into the Championship in the early stages of the 2008–09 season, losing the form that had created the backbone of success in the Forest defence throughout the previous season. Following this, came his first red card in over a year, for two bookable offenses against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on 27 September 2008. However as the season progressed further Morgan redeveloped his form from the previous term, culminating in his first goal of the season – a towering header in Forest’s 2–0 away win at Southampton on 20 December. At the end of the 2008–09 season he has made a total of 274 appearances in all competitions, including 255 starts. October 2011 saw Wes Morgan make his 400th appearance for Nottingham Forest against Hull City in a match in which he was also handed the captaincy.

Thanks for the tips bhoys, was looking to do a wee bit of a look around (and exercise some ghost of the past as well). The girlfriend is on it as far as hotels are concerned but ahm looking for the nights out patter.

She’s fae Mexico so no probs wae the translation (ma Spanish is horrible due tae the fact ah got force feed French in high school), but wis looking fir traditional meals and maybe visit the stadium.

Also she is becoming a Celtic fan but with Juarez gone Ki is her fav player. Ah have tae side with the woman and ah hope Ki doesn’t leave. Look at the 2 Manc games today and see how well football can be played when there is a big pitch. Most of the clubs in Scotland have small pitches and they pack their defense which strangles a game.

Ma point: get ALL grounds in the sphell to adhere to a big pitch standard, it wouldnae cost, wouldnae take up space fae the stands and maybe get the rest of the teams who arenae trying to play football tae at least consider the option.

  10. …PFayr/Ard Macha- Brian Winter, who did our game last week is head and shoulders above all the incompetents/cheats that we suffer, minimum of fuss, let’s the game flow, nobody even noticed him.

He obviously wasn’t in Dallas’ inner circle otherwise or he would be much higher profile by now. Maybe he is too fair?

Saying that, we will never get a level playing field until we get outside officials in, the Luxembourg officials last season gave us a taste of what life would be like.

That part of “trying to play football” is why they don’t,they’d rather play 9 men? behind that ball and kick us of the park, and that’s not just the huns.

Watched the Neil Lennon interview , link posted earlier.

Really good interview and I hope he carries out the promise to let us know what McCoist whispered in his ear at Celtic Park , at some point in the future.

Not to disagree with your principle, but…

As I recall, the Luxembourg officials last year chopped a perfectly good goal for an incorrect offside decision, in a match we drew 1-1. That decision and those points were hugely costly.

If they want tae continue down this vein then they are the ones tae finally put the nail in the coffin but ahve seen a lot of teams come out and try and play football this season : Dundee Utd, Kilmarnock (fell dirty just saying that), Dunfermline, St Johnston. If they would all adapt to a bigger pitch then this league would be a lot more competitive.

  21. I just watched all of the SPL highlights on the BBC site and it is true that all of the teams have something to offer. An off day for Kilmarnock though while the Pars were excellent.

Just scored Barca’s third, who’d ya drop?

  24. TBB- Yes, you are correct, the main stand linesman ruled out a good goal, but that was a “genuine” honest mistake.

The game (v ICT) finished 2-2, we were 2-0 up, home and hosed and then the panic button was pressed in the last 10 mins.

Rogne and Dan were all over the place at the end.

    All our own fault.

What I clearly recall though is the number of 50/50’s we got that day, decisions that we are pre-programmed to accept would not be ours- it was like watching a different sport.
