Defending in Europe

660

As news of the goal deluge from the Bernabeu arrived last night it must have caused some reflection at Celtic. Real Madrid thumped Malmo, our eliminators, 8-0. Malmo are not, after all, this season’s surprise packages.

European football is an unforgiving environment, not just for the minnows. Roma, who are currently second in their Champions League group, lost 6-1 in Barcelona two weeks ago. That result came on the back of Bayern Munich taking a 0-5 lead inside 36 minutes in front of 70,000 fans in Rome in last season’s tournament. Bayern went on to win 1-7 in what was supposed to be a game which changed Roma’s ways.

Roma are a good team, currently fourth in Serie A, but their expansive tendencies have earned them humiliating results against teams capable of exploiting them.

Rule No. 1 in Europe is to be defensively disciplined. If you don’t have that aspect of the game figures out, you are as well not competing.

While John Collins was no doubt sincere in saying he could see tonight’s game far enough, he should be relishing the opportunity to test his defence against a European team. This is our last chance before next season’s qualifiers. It is a precious occasion to test tactics.

Thanks to everyone who has bought Winds of Change, and for the fantastic feedback on what was an incredible era to be a Celtic supporter.

Any intelligent person going for office has to have a clean closet before going on a crusade in most of Europe. Jeremy Corbyn is having to defend minor faux pas from years ago and will probably never get to be PM now. Shame.

In America it seems you can hate immigrants when you are one, hate terrorists, while advocating arming others and your ratings go up! Crazy place and I think Trump us shining a light on and for a worrying society.

Sorry for being morose, will cheer up tomorrow if we win!

Regardless of the image it wishes to project, the USA is a very primitive society…

Blatant and obvious lies in political posturing are calmly denied then actually defended…

Say whatever you want this week and then say something at odds with that next week and no one bothers…

I think Americans don’t get satire very well because that’s how their politicians and media act all the time..

We see it as satirical, but they see it as their reality…

WDH … thanks …. both look very interesting ….. might have to revise my earlier comment … I might have to get a track suit 2 sizes bigger! :)

  4. The 5 way agreement gets a severe body swerve on shortbread, padded interview if ever I heard one, cringeworthy actually, a complete and utter waste of time to be very honest.

so … Martin O’Neill and Michael O’neill are joint Irish managers of the year ….. I liked Martin when he was here …. shame about his wife taking ill, as I think it (understandably) took away his focus ….. but I would like to see young Michael given a run at Celtic … like the cut of his jib.

No British politician would ever say something and then renege on it. Really.

Today is the day that it became official that a British politician can lie and not really harm anyone.

Not questioning the fact that teams have progressed from other nations, just feel that we should be ahead of them. Our form in Europe is shocking over the last few years and the days when teams came here in total apprehension seem to be over at present. Maribor, Malmo, Legia Warsaw [Who hammered us) Molde to name but a few. We need to sort it out soon

    Bought mine today.

Arsenal need to win by two clear goals or win 3-2 to equal the result in the first match.

Chelsea need a draw to progress.

Why do you bother listening to them.

Does not matter a damn about five or forty five way agreements. DD and PL will be rolling out the red carpet for THEM come next season.

Mine is usually fiver, but the fiver I put on last night was still in my kitty today, due to having a few libations yesterday I obviously didn’t get my bet on right, so tonight I just doubled up, it was a signe :)

Not too much to disagree with there.

So how did it all come about?

    Easy. In one word. Downsizing.

  13. Bayer Levekusen v Barca for me tonight but will flick up and down on BT sports extra to catch up with the other matches

Only just catching up on the Carmichael result so can’t comment yet.

I agree Europe has specific issues but it just seems too easy in the US and the vast majority don’t confront Lillian Gish from politicians as you do

If you are still online, I might come down the Bad Ass tomorrow for the game (need a pass); are you going down?

Personally, I found it odd that Trump is being castigated for a ban on Muslim immigrants and yet nobody seems keen to ask him about how easy it is for terrorists and others to get guns in America.

Then again, I believe the tube said that the Paris massacre would not have happened if the French had had more guns.

  17. 67 heaven,

I’d say the Gooners game neebs.

They have to better the 2-1 reversal from the home leg so kinda have to go for it.

  18. “Anyone betting Barca might be worth your while looking at the team they`re fielding tonight.”

    Soukous,

There’s a few changes but it’s still a tidy line up. Leverkusen can still progress which is a factor too.
