Deila and Hutter bedding into their new teams

1385

There are parallels between Salzburg and Celtic.  After an outstanding season Salzburg lost their coach, Roger Schmidt, in May to Bayer Leverkusen, appointing Adolf Hutter (commentators beware), who previously managed Austrian Bundesliga club Grodig and is largely unknown outside Austria.

Unlike Ronny Deila, Hutter has not tried to change Salzburg’s system, but the period of transformation has been blamed for Salzburg failing to overcome Malmo in the Champions League play-off round (Malmo taxed Juventus in Turin last night before two second half Tevez goals settled things).  New instructions, new training techniques and, in some cases, new personnel present challenges.

Ronny has had a few false starts but the return of Scott Brown at the weekend, the return to form of Kris Commons, who will surely start, and the addition of Scepovic, Tonev and Wakaso to the squad give reason for confidence.

Thanks to everyone who signed up to participate in the Great Scottish Run to raise funds for the Foundation in their work with poverty, equality, learning and health.  You can sign up here.

We’ve had over 3,000 responses so far to the survey on Celtic fans, who they are, where they came from, and what their views are.  The results will give an excellent insight into this time in our history.  If you’ve not had a chance to leave your mark yet, please do so here (only your first submission counts).

In three years there will be a UK referendum on EU membership. So there is a good chance Scotland will be out of the EU anyway with a No vote tomorrow. If there is a Yes vote Scotland might be out of the EU, nobody seems to know for sure.

The EU membership is distracting attention from the real issue in tomorrows’ Independence referendum.

    ======================

The sensible thing to do therefore (but sense seems to have evaporated) would be to have separate referendums in Scotland and England at the same time on the same issue.

If the UK them agreed to spilt (Scotland for and England against) then the EU would have to recognise that what we had was not a cessation of membership but a transfer under agreed conditions of part membership.

Scots would have agreed to use the euro and the major barrier to independence from the UK would be decided as part of the vote.

At the moment we have piap* as our future currency.

    (Pig in a poke*)

As a project plan Gannt chart Agreeing the ultimate currency should have been task 1 on which all else was dependent.

    Plan A we get it.

    Plan B we don’t.

Sort that out first and we have a much better idea of where we are heading.

There was, unhappily, an element of truth in what you said. After the Blair betrayal (I hold Brown much less responsible) there was a devastating loss of faith in the Labour Movement and the victory of Ed Millinabd has not changed that one iota.

To that extent, the bloody nose given to Westminster by the Yes campaign has successfully shaken things up. However, I cannot swallow the fantasy politics and their track record for hiding unpleasant news (whether that was stats on sectarian offences or their legal verdict sought on their future position within Europe). I think Salmond and Yes are riding a similar “Things can only get better” vibe that swept Blair to power. As we saw then, getting better is not the only option.

Re EU Membership (quite a few posts on here).

HOWEVER – we have to consider that Scotland is already one of the 20 richest countries in the world (per capita – and I am allowing for set-up cots here. The OECD ranking puts us at 14) . We are the biggest oil producer in the EU, a union which has to support countries like bulgaria, romania, slovakia, greece etc etc. These countries drain the EU pot, and the EU would desperately like to have more prosperous northern members who can contribute to said pot. Given that most of our population are EU citizens, do you really think that the EU would not desperately want to sort out a deal to avoid losing it’s biggest oil producer?? Kick the Scots out, but keep funding Bulgaria and Greece?? Come on.

    =================

We do not have to be members of the EU for EU countries to buy our oil. That will be dictated by price not politics.

The judgement will be can we sell our oil and gather enough revenue to make a contribution to the EU budget to bail out underperformers?

The rules that have been applied to other members before joining will have to be checked but the underlying principle will be one of “can we pay our way?”.

The only way to prove you can pay your way is by evidence that you have.

There is a parallel in UEFA FFP Article 12 which requires a club restructuring and taking on new legal form having to wait three years of trading as members of their national association before they can get entry to UEFA competition.

Unless we can offer some bond (or bribe) I don’t see it being a quick transition.

If a Tory says there will be more powers the nationalists line up to say that a Tory can’t be trusted. Yet if a Tory says there will be opposition to more powers it is treated as absolute truth.

It takes a broad church of MPs – at least 280-300 – to carry a bill and create an Act of Parliament

It takes a handful of disaffected Tories to sow mayhem for the three leaders whose commitment to these supposed new powers is greater than that of Tory backbenchers

    this guy says it way better than I could;

As a patriotic Welshman, I understand some of the appeal of independence. Nothing would push me towards it more than the English media telling me it wasn’t possible, but Scotland doesn’t need to need to listen to the minority making such claims. Everyone I know in Wales is desperate for you to stay with us, precisely because of the success that Scotland has always brought to the union. I supported Celtic as a boy and lived in fear of ‘ten in a row’ in the late 1990s. I was introduced to classical music by Nicola Benedetti. When I pour myself a single malt on a Friday evening I swirl it in the glass and marvel at the most complex, sophisticated drink man has yet invented. And I like to feel that I have a stake in all of that. That it’s a part of my national identity.

I don’t care about the oil or the currency or the monarchy. It’s the people of Scotland who are its greatest asset, and if you leave Britain, we’ll be much the worse for it. Stay with us.

I also agree to an extent, but in the same breath, I don’t believe anything will change.

Once the vote is over, be it YES, westminster will crumble, the english will be in freefall, they won’y know what’s hit them.

It will be the same for scotland, they won’t know what’s round the corner either.

I am under no illusion that everything will be all rosy, it won’t, it will be a struggle to make things work, to say otherwise is foolhardy.

But it will work with dedication, the people will have but no choice to get involved, the politicos will be held accountable, or they will be gone.

I believe a new breed of politician will emerge, they will care more their land, for their people, tis a dream, but it’s better than what is on offer just now, cos what’s on offer just now ain’t that great, and it will NOT get better for the man in the street.

The banks need to be regulated first and foremost, do that and things will fall into place.

And I do not believe that they will care, nor will they change their direction if scotland votes no, their collective relief will be heard world wide, in fact, I believe revenge will be their goal, just cos they can.

  17. Well it seems that Wee Snake-Oil Salmond has had phenomenal success in getting most of the easily-led punters coralled at the top of the cliff, stoically waiting for his order to jump.

The sort of folk that, when faced with the difficulty of trying to do a rational analysis of such figures as were available, opted to take his uncosted guff at face value.

It is one thing to play the emotive overly-romanticised braveheart card to underpin one’s case, but when that facet takes centre stage it is beyond dangerous.

There is not a civilised country in the world that does not desire a “fairer, caring, morally upstanding government” for all of its people. But when such claims come without any tangible evidence that such a society can be appropriately funded then it is just so much piss and wind.

Worse than that, when anyone questions his figures (or lack thereof) it is routinely dismissed out of hand as scaremongering, or the work of those nasty Ingerlish toffs in Westminster, generally topped off with some irrelevant comment that they are (although there is usually no evidence to support this!) insulting the intelligence of the Scottish people. Aye, he is never backwards at coming forwards with his racist agenda.

Thankfully however, once it has been taken into account that these core voters of the lemming variety are hell bent on voting YES irrespective of what arguments may be put to them, we have to turn our attention to the remaining electorate.

These are, it seems, those who are more inclined to avoid taking unnecessary risks as they have probably put a bit more thought into their analysis.

And it seems that the appeal of the camp that constantly asserts that, in any future negotiations they will get all that they want, and stubbornly refuses to brook any form of scepticism, is on the wane.

On friday morning I fully expect to awake to the news that the forces of sanity have prevailed in Scotland, and that Salmond has begun drawing up plans to disappear back into the political wilderness taking with him his ragtag band of reckless and feckless, naive and nasty eejits with him.

This was clearly laid out in the White Paper. We will be sellotaping 200 747s together and flying to Australia en masse.

There is one aspect that makes me very wary of independence and that is that we get an SNP mindset taking over.

Now when I say mindset I can only speak of the mindset I have observed through the football lense.

What I can say about that is that such a mindset has allowed corruption and deceit to go on for over 12 years unpunished even when the evidence of such is laid bare and judges have been directed to rule. Note directed, not asked.

Then there is the absolute refusal to look at the evidence mixed with the fear of insisting it is looked at.

In any country with a fair mindset there would have been no need for a Resolution 12 and certainly no need to pursue it under the radar to try and achieve justice.

Apart from my other points I’m not so sure how much this is influencing my thinking being so close to the actual issues, but I have a fear of such a mind set taking power for the foreseeable future and what it will mean for fairness and justice in Scottosh society.

At least you know what you are dealing with on the Tories but the SNP? There is a touch of the dark about them.
