Deila and Hutter bedding into their new teams

1385

There are parallels between Salzburg and Celtic.  After an outstanding season Salzburg lost their coach, Roger Schmidt, in May to Bayer Leverkusen, appointing Adolf Hutter (commentators beware), who previously managed Austrian Bundesliga club Grodig and is largely unknown outside Austria.

Unlike Ronny Deila, Hutter has not tried to change Salzburg’s system, but the period of transformation has been blamed for Salzburg failing to overcome Malmo in the Champions League play-off round (Malmo taxed Juventus in Turin last night before two second half Tevez goals settled things).  New instructions, new training techniques and, in some cases, new personnel present challenges.

Ronny has had a few false starts but the return of Scott Brown at the weekend, the return to form of Kris Commons, who will surely start, and the addition of Scepovic, Tonev and Wakaso to the squad give reason for confidence.

  1. If anyone believes the Tories that they will deliver these more powers for Scotland then I don’t question your principles…I question your sanity!

  2. greenwells glory – In its place was a kind of shopping list of desires that was being added to daily. So there was: Get rid of Trident, raise the minimum wage, lower corporation tax, promote gay and lesbian rights, create a world leading Green economy, exploit oil to the full and become a world leading petro-chemical economy, nationalise the banks, nationalise BP, be more attractive to foreign investment. The shopping list of ‘positive’ ideal goals could never tally up, the desires of the Yessers were incompatible and contradicted each other, but to raise this was seen as being ‘negative’. Every kind of Yes had to be included, and this meant there could be no debate. […] This was what YES had started to mean – it meant YES to everything

    Earth shattering that one.

Strangely he doesn’t say the same about Better together’s unholy alliance.”

Funnily enough, the poster West end of the East end made a contemporaneous mirror point about the No campaign coalition that Greenwell’s made about Yes.

Strangely, you didn’t make the same intervention about his point that you made to GG.

  5. On a wee fitba point, as we await news of our line up for tomorrow, I would note that Roy Keane’s appointment as Villa asst. coach has not had the kind of disastrous impact that was widely predicted on here AND he has lasted a whole month in the job without a resignation or player revolt.

Villa are unbeaten having won 10 out of 12 points and beaten Liverpool and Stoke away from home.

Maybe Roy was in charge of their LC loss, however.

  7. In three years there will be a UK referendum on EU membership. So there is a good chance Scotland will be out of the EU anyway with a No vote tomorrow. If there is a Yes vote Scotland might be out of the EU, nobody seems to know for sure.

The EU membership is distracting attention from the real issue in tomorrows’ Independence referendum.

You do realise that you are behaving exactly in the manner ascribed in his article to people on your side of the debate don’t you?

From now on only people the great Snake Plisken has heard of (An approves of) may be referenced. Pretty much sums up the Scottish Nazi Party world view.

My parents aligned me to The Labour Movement n order to ensure I did not sit at the back of the bus.

They ignored the big tartan bus with the Scottish Independence route marked on it. It started running its service all over Scotland in the 60s and no Tim I knew in Castlemilk thought that was the bus for them at the time. I started to hear about a few Tims getting on the bus in the late 70s but it was felt to be a bus full of those Tartan Army types that Ian Bankier likes.

I don’t know when it became the trendy bus. Maybe when Brian Souter gave it a new set of wheels.

  21. Re EU Membership (quite a few posts on here).

Let’s be clear. We (the Scots) are currently EU citizens, under the Lisbon Treaty, and it is enshrined in our passports.

The EU will have some difficulty taking that away from us – should they try to do so. Barrosso (sp?) was acting out of incredible self interest, when stating Spain would block our membership application, as that country is simply desperate to stop Catalunya copying us and becoming independent.

Spain is clearly acting against the spirit of the EU here. As long as we meet the criteria set out in article 61 of the Treaty on European Union (fair elections, will of the people etc etc) then membership is open to us. The EU runs a Member Access Program for new states wishing to join, and to support them in meeting the criteria. In short – EU membership is easily attainable to a prosperous country like Scotland. (They will help us to join).

HOWEVER – we have to consider that Scotland is already one of the 20 richest countries in the world (per capita – and I am allowing for set-up cots here. The OECD ranking puts us at 14) . We are the biggest oil producer in the EU, a union which has to support countries like bulgaria, romania, slovakia, greece etc etc. These countries drain the EU pot, and the EU would desperately like to have more prosperous northern members who can contribute to said pot. Given that most of our population are EU citizens, do you really think that the EU would not desperately want to sort out a deal to avoid losing it’s biggest oil producer?? Kick the Scots out, but keep funding Bulgaria and Greece?? Come on.

Additionally, even if Scotland had to wait a short while for full membership (highly unlikely!) we would simply join the EEA – via the European Free Trade Assosciation. This gang of 4 includes Norway, Liechtenstein, Iceland and Switzerland…. not exactly poverty stricken!! Croatia are in the process of joining up. Although not intended as such, the EEA operates as a kind of ‘nursery’ to full EU membership, and citizens have the same right of free movement/free labour etc throughout the EU. I live in one of the EU capitals, and can confirm there are large numbers of Swiss and Norwegian companies and people based here. As such, Scotland could sit in the EEA for a few years pending full EU membership. I doubt very much that this would be required however.

People voting ‘No’ on the EU argument are frankly clueless anyway however, as the only way that rUK could get a UKIP stand down, and avoid a Tory/UKIP split is to offer a referendum on EU membership. i am sure this will happen, (2016? 2017?) and it looks as though the majority of english want to leave the EU. Scotland could well vote ‘no’ to leaving the union, and then be yanked out of the EU by english voters in 2 years. Personally, I suspect ths will happen. (And it will be the Scots own fault).

Vote YES, and take control of our own future.

I’m sure all the ‘aye’ and ‘naw’ folk will be best pals again in a couple days and then we can get on with the aul Poppy Debate.

My referendum prediction is that No will win. I say this on the basis that Chris Graham and Bill McMurdo, son of Bill McMurdo, have both predicted a No victory.

And those boys are always right. They do have a sensational track record when it comes to backing winners.
