Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

Two issues with this article Paul.

How much time do you give him?

If we have signed a large number of George Weahs family not genetically predisposed to football a la George… Who scouted them and the agreed to sign them?

What makes you think that Ronny will have any more than a 33% chance of influencing who comes in?

After all we are told that Park scouts them and then he, Lawell and the head coach vote on who they go for. Actually 33% is being kind as Lawell then rides of to tie down the agreed targets. It would be easy for Peter to tell any number of porkies to his subordinates on the success or otherwise of his negotiations.

I assume the George Weahs cousins include Tonev, Berget and don’t include Wakaso or Scepovic?

Scepovic… Hmmm. We are now in October and not a blow struck from this chap. Another £2.3 m down the stank? And this guy was our top target?

If we are signing George Weahs cousin then what happens to the much Lauded scouting and further than that the club structure which Ronny was supposed to fit into?

Are we now saying the manager should be given the chance to pick the players he wants to sign rather than those chosen for him? Remember that lead articles have previously supported the approach where the manager has little or no say in who is signed. Examples were given if the mistakes of Moyes.

Le Guen is now a failure as a manager. I’m not surprised given his contempt for the Scottish game at that time and his lack of patience. Ronny seems to want a similar revolution and will not change course.

Ronny gets it wrong this season and we are staining at the Europa again next season at best and I presume another change of coach.

Looking at our points total, we cannot afford to drop 10 points between now and Christmas.

Celtic should practice hitting crosses, at a headable height, at a volleyable height, along the deck, into the penalty box area, in front of the goals.

Not overhit, clearing the box, underhit, hitting the first defender or passing outside the 18 yard box.

A basic drill. We need to Find out who can deliver this simple task.

    ——————————————————————————-

Agree – no-one should be allowed to leave training until they have hit 100 consecutive decent crosses. A lot of decent midfield play comes to nothing and the forwards don’t know what type of cross to go for. Should not be difficult to sort out.

However, we also need to hit a bye line and cut back sometimes to vary the ball into the box. Very little of that recently has been on evidence.

Ronny promise evolution rather than revolution but evolution means developing what good you have – not pulling it apart and doing it all differently. Get back to some basics (protecting the defense) and build up the midfield and wing play from there. We were back to pre- Martin O’Neill times the way we were caught out yesterday on the break. There was one corner we had where so many of our players were up field that Hamilton had a 5 on 2 break if they had played a decent ball into midfield. Thankfully, they over hit but we were dead if that pass had fallen 10 yards shorter.

If you Pause Sunday’s game at the moment the ball comes in from their left wing,it will become glaringly obvious why we have struggled, and will continue to struggle,to keep a clean sheet with these players playing with their present attitude.

Count the opposing teams players attacking the cross completely unmatched.

  9. Stefan Johansen is not part of the solution .

He is part of the problem .

    He can run forever.

Is easily beaten in the tackle ,too often he freezes when in on goal, and he fails to find a Celtic player with his passes, far too often.

I despair at the standard of player our scouts and management think can take the club forward.

I think you are missing a major point.

No company expects instant success from a position of failure. However neither should a company ( in this case Celtic FC) expect instant failure from a position of strength?

We wanted a manager who could build upon success not erode the advantages we have enjoyed?

As always there is a lot of logic and common sense not just from Paul 67 but from most on here that understand nothing is ever easy

BUT – what is the measurement of how long we give Ronny

The facts are that performances to date have been very poor

Most (not necessarily me) on here think we will win the league – some say easily ??

My point is yes he deserves time but how much ??

If we lose the league (horrible thought) but Ronny gets more experienced – is that OK ??

    Not for me

Top of the league by end of November or I will be shouting for him to go

and BTW some decent football to watch along the way would be nice

  17. Disagree totally about building the team around Brown and Johansen because they showed their frustration… I along with thousands more in the stands were frustrated.

You also say we need players with “courage and attitude”, I can think of two that have more of that than Johansen – Kayal and young Henderson.

We had chances to win yesterday but the quality of football is poor and has been for a while, why do we play 2 wingers and get them to cut inside every time? Very predictable Celtic.

Ronny is persisting with playing two holding midfielders and relying on wingers, who in my opinion he keeps playing on the wrong wing, to provide the service.

This leaves a glaring whole in the middle of the park. Hamilton exploited it well in the second half yesterday.

He’s a young manager who’ll make mistakes. In my opinion he’s not learning from them, that’s the worrying aspect.

Id have him on a serious training routine for a month to trim him dowm to be honest, hes not fat but his body shape means he isnt sharp enough at times.

If anyone should be playing his role it should be young mcgregor but he needs to learn that replacing commons doesnt meam u just hover around box and shoot everytime u get ball.

I guess SB could probably make people sit up and take notice, but I’d imagine better results would ensue if someone less “volatile” tried getting the message across.

I suspect that both he and SJ are getting fed up with working their tails off only to see certain people running away from them and hiding out on the wings. The likes of Tonev, who seems always to feel that as long as he cuts inside and lets off the odd long range shot that he is helping matters. We seem to employ a formation that leaves too many players out on the periphery of a large empty space, and that territory is constantly being filled with opposition midfielders that don’t have to work very hard at all to get plenty of possession. We really need to plug that gap with some midfielders of our own. We even have the players to do that, but we consistently fail to deploy them there.

    Astounding!
