Deila, Lennon, Le Guen and George Weah’s many cousins

1054

Back in October 2011 I was for calling an end to the Neil Lennon experiment.  During the previous season he lost the league after a late collapse, while exiting Europe in August after defeats to Braga and Utrecht.  That season Sion’s insistence in not playing by the rules allowed us a backdoor ticket to the Europa League but we were 10 points behind Ally McCoist’s Rangers.

Subsequent events proved there was not enough evidence on show to judge the Neil Lennon era early in his second season.  Neil pulled things together, finished a credible third in the Europa League group and never looked back.

Ronny Deila has already made mistakes in his Celtic tenure but does anyone seriously believe he has had the opportunity and resources to build a team?  Of course not.  He needs to sort out the many cousins of George Weah who have arrived recently from the genuine John Guidetti’s.  He needs players who can pass the ball with reasonable accuracy but most of all he needs players of courage and attitude.

I would probably be singing a different tune if we still had Rangers to contend with, long-term development objectives are important but the short-term need to win the league remains absolute, but we don’t, which means short-term targets remain well within grasp.

The memory of Rangers’ many mistakes in the years before liquidation offers another lesson.  They sacked Paul Le Guen six months into a badly needed overhaul project.  Le Guen was appointed months before he took up the reins and had enough time to watch his new team and scout transfer targets, but even that wasn’t enough to ensure a smooth transition, as he found the Weahs living in Austria.  Le Guen was decrying his as a heretic by a club incapable of change.

Despite the tiredness after Thursday and a plethora of injuries, Celtic had enough resources to swamp a tiny football club yesterday.  That we didn’t, suggests Ronny has a big job on his hands.  From the frustration shown by Scott Brown and Stefan Johansen at their team-mates yesterday, I suggest he builds his recovery around these two.

Yep and i would go for that in europe aswel.

Domestically we should be playing 2 up top everytime

The Parvda/Daly Mail comparisom is not comparing like with like

Pravda told people everything was rosy in the garden when it clealy wasn’t

The Daily Mail emphasises that the garden is far from rosy but throws up spurious reasons for this

I am really gone past caring about Ronny now,he will go eventually its only a matter of time

What saddens me is that so many otherwise seemingly intelligent people want to give him more time

The only rational thing today is put him on a plane to Norway immediately

  3. I suggested before that we could do worse than get Davie Hay involved as a wise old Celt to assist the management team. Davie had much to contend with in his first season as Celtic manager and he also has plenty experience of the game in Norway. He also has an eye for a player so could bring a freshness to our recruitment policy this avoiding the duds.

Re yesterday’s result – was it that unexpected. We had a home game v Kilmarnock after beating Barcelona and got turned over. Still disappointing but well played Hamilton.

  4. Celtic should practice hitting crosses, at a headable height, at a volleyable height, along the deck, into the penalty box area, in front of the goals.

Not overhit, clearing the box, underhit, hitting the first defender or passing outside the 18 yard box.

A basic drill. We need to Find out who can deliver this simple task.

At the same time, forwards should be drilled, moving into positions attacking the near post, far post and penalty spot to attempt single touch finishes.

Yes, I do know these are basic drills but anyone watching our team recently would surely realise that we require to go back to basics.

And god help us if we already practice set pieces and Anthony Stokes is the best we have offer.

  5. Quick question

Espcially for our glasgow based posters ?

Have use friends who are no doubt celtic fans and no longer attend the games and if so for what reasons ?

I havent been to a game in 4yrs but was always surprised when i was in glasgow the many people i met who were celtic fans but hadnt been to game for few yrs or maybe went couple times a season.

few yrs ago when niall quinn took over sunderland chairmans job he went around the areas doing question/answers session to try and bring fans back.

Im sure our ceo is paid enough to maybe try this .. Even if it means abit of criticism come his way.

  6. I think that we are at a very dangerous crossroads here.

It’s becoming increasingly clear, almost by the day, that those who run our club have no connection to the support in general.

Sure they have surveyed us etc but there is a complete lack of understanding in their actions and inactions.

Paul’s view on Ronny clearly echos that of the board. That they believe that they have the right strategy and right man in place despite a wealth of evidence saying otherwise I think shows how far apart we are.

Constant refer nudes to what happenned at rangers are also in evidence. It seems the board cannot handle the divorce that rangers liquidation has encountered.

We have had years of expectation management and the theories such as Moneyball etc have only seen us continually diminish with crowds flocking away from CP. Sure the board will continue to make excuses that it’s not their fault and it’s all become too hard.

But the truth remains. We are a pale shadow of last years team, our new manager is, sorry, but talking nonsense on a regular basis, he says one thing and the team does another. We are disjointed and have no clear sense of direction.

He was a cheap third choice. We know that now despite all the nonsensical denials we have previously heard.

Celtic have and are continuing to alienate the support. They believe that they know better.

They are willing to gamble celtics future on it.

  7. All Weah saying,

is give Rd a chance… (Repeat)

I’m all for it. For what it’s worth, I posted after the game and said the continuing with Stokes and Commons would be his downfall.

Be your own man Rd. But listen to my advice.

Put players in the position where they perform best. And then fill in the gaps. Wakaso on the right? No siree.

Stokes wide on the left? No siree bob. Even though it worked once.

Efe as an attacking right back. No siree. He is an excellent centre back. He is also a good defensive right back. But don’t ask him to charge down the wing, overall the wrong-footed winger and deliver dangerous crosses. No sir.

No doubt someone will point out we have no other options for right back. To which I would say, play a right mid in front of him to do the attacking. Play a system which suits the players you have at your disposal.

Is Gordon the best keeper in Scotland?

Are VVD and Denayer the best centre back combination in Scotland?

Is Izzy the best attacking left back in Scotland (now that Robertson is in the EPL)?

Is Efe a good right back, and between Lustig Matthews and Fisher do we have the best right back in Scotland?

Right, there’s yer defence sorted. So we are not dropping points due to defence. Agreed?

Which means it’s the scoring which is the problem. Evident on Sunday.

Do we have someone to provide slide rule passes to give strikers chances?

Do we have any striker you are confident will score every game?

Do we have wingers who can beat a man and hit the bye line then deliver a “telling” cross?

Well that’s yer attacking problem identified. Fixing it is easy. Stop taking the easy option of passing the ball back. Try the difficult pass, pay no heed to the moaners in the stand when it doesn’t come off. Now, play two strikers up front. My preference is Guidetti and Giffiths. But make your own choice.

Either go for it. Or just go.

  8. The Battered Bunnet on

Berget? If you can’t play like a Celtic player, at least try to look like one. With the bear-eating beard and styoopit ponytail thing, he looks like some errant US gun club nutter.

A shave and a haircut is the least we should expect of our deadwood.

    We need stylish subs.

  12. Proud bhoy the board don’t understand the support and think they know better. They would never deign to speak directly to us.

  13. I have a further concern….

Delia was an unknown when we brought him in but had the ‘Celtic card’ to play in attracting new players.

Now that he is a better known – is his stock higher than when we signed him? I think he is less well placed to sign players in January as he is now a known ‘failure’ which is worse than being an unknown with potential….

“Not Lazy Journalism” Aye right Peter…..I mean Paul!

  16. I keep on saying that it’s not Ronny that passes the ball to the other team, doesn’t track back or misses easy chances.

Let’s say that the players are on an average salary of £300k a year – I would guess that it’s a lot more than that.

Any job that pays over £100k implicitly expects you to have work as your no. 1 priority in life.

Not speaking from personal experience, btw.

Whatever you do, if you suddenly had a new boss who expected you to work solidly during the day rather than the previous one who allowed you to knock off to the pub on Friday afternoons and have nice long coffee breaks, you then decided to stop making an effort and made sloppy mistakes – that attitude would not be tolerated.

  19. Good post Paul.If anyone seriously thought that RD could come in and change around a club the size of Celtic in a few months they are deluded. He inherited a load of dross. He was handed some more dross. It will take him until the January window to get rid of this dross and hopefully get better in.

The whole ethos of diet, fitness, good habits, are starting to work. The players will back this up.What do we want. The same old, same old.One win against Barca, being held aloft to say all was really great then. The regime Rd is putting in place at Celtic is commonplace in Italy,Germany,Spain. In fact its the rule.It wont happen overnight for us.The manager has been telling us this since he arrived. It took him years of practicing his philosophy in his last job,but it worked. To be a possible 3 points off the top of the league, sitting top of our EL group, still in with a great chance of the treble, and calling for his head is unbelievable.

I do not agree with all he does.I keep saying he must play 3 across the middle.Maybe he will when Mulgrew is fit.But passengers like Tonev,Bergets, must be consigned to the bench,or worse Just how much of an effect would a FIT Forrest have.Kayal looks a better option than Johansen at the moment. These are things I hope to see.A full squad of players back, and then if things keep on as they are, then will be the time to look at things. Not now.

We WILL win this league, easilyPeople saying otherwise are the ones on the managers case.

If we want to see Celtic back as any kind of force in Europe,we are going to have to adapt to methods the same as RDs,no matter if he is there or not.To carry on as before is to stagnate as we have been doing.Fitter, faster, stronger, like most of the teams we have been playing in Europe for the past 20 years.

    .

  20. Said it at time…guy walks off a plane , hardly played at all for his own club in the previous season ,knows none of his new teamates.straight into one of the most important games of the season,,(which it seems to be forgotten we lost 6-1 on agg) if someone on here can explain that decision to me with a plausble explanation then i might somehow comprehend whats inthe managers mind…until such times,i will keep thinking the guys a dud…

  21. Win the league this year…. we have a few tricky games coming up Kilmarnock are playing no bad and getting results, Aberdeen away, that fixture is back to the years of old a difficult place to go. Dundee Utd will have got a lift from our result yesterday, yes a bit of a competitive edge in the league now, seems we’re not competing though.

Everything will be fine, we’ll win the league….!

I’m not so sure at this moment in time.

By the sounds of it senior players are lacking (which has been the case all season) and the loanees that RD was given are not up to scratch ( which has been the case all season).

I really feel for RD as it’s not him out there kicking the ball and not marking the opposition but if players are not performing to the required level drop them.
