I automatically cut the manager some slack. He has dropped in on our “continual erosion”, as you quite aptly put it and, if he delivers the league title will rightly be considered a ‘phenomenal success’, if not practically ja ‘miracle worker’ after last season and the start of this.
I posted earlier that I believe it is the way our club is run, the psychology that puts survival first, domestic success second and anything else third, only if it fits into our ‘cut the cloth to suit’ rigid approach, that is probably at the root of our lack of European progress. Probably the experience of seeing Rangers FC collapse and die so spectacularly has reinforced this mindset within those who run Celtic.
We are totally risk-averse, in contrast to Ibrox, where the ‘once bitten, twice shy’ adage is totally ignored in their ‘win at all/any cost, and under all/any circumstances” approach.
A new mindset and some new money is needed if we are to challenge in Europe ever again. This has been apparent with mounting evidence over the past eighteen years. We won’t gamble if our model and finances stay broadly similar in the short/medium-term.
Finally, and in some way a slight contradiction to what I have previously said : How can a provincial Norwegian club, situated in the Artic Circle, with a stadium akin to Firhill and enjoying only a fraction of our football budget, produce a playing system and players who are demonstrably so much better than anything we have?

We get by fine domestically because we will always score more goals against the opposition we play, but when we come up against stronger defenses, then it exposes our own weaknesses at the back.
