Derision, hiding, wanting to win the league?

935

I don’t know is that was the worst home performance I’ve seen, but it was up there. We look like a broken team. Dundee were comfortable throughout, limited Celtic to one genuine chance in the game (in the 76th minute), and caused havoc during their regular attacks on Craig Gordon’s goals. Their best chance came from a corner kick (what else), which was sent over by a player who stopped to head the ball from 5 yards.

Charlie Mulgrew is not the most gifted player, he’s not a central midfielder and he’s not game-fit yet, but despite putting in an indifferent shift last night, he never hid.  The juxtaposition between him and others was stark.  We need players with attitude – the captain back on form, Kris Commons fully fit and starting, and others taking their lead.

Confidence is on the floor. Mistakes, backwards passing and long balls forward were all subject to derision, but I think last night was the first time I’ve heard a Celtic substitute being booed onto the field.  All because he doesn’t want to renew a contract for his position as occasionally-used squad player.  The seriousness of the situation is clearly lost on those who want to boo a player taking the field instead of encouraging the guy to help us win a game.  The whole experience got me thinking, how many of us actually want to win this league?

You better believe they want to win it at Pittodrie.  They have focus, form, packed stands and patience.  They also enjoy the ‘Leicester City effect’ – everyone not competing directly with them wants them to win.  The rest of Scottish football is desperate for us to tear ourselves apart right now.  We need to circle the wagons, live up to the reputation we like to think we have, and play our role in delivering this title.

You want 10-in-a-row?  Bring me your complaints in May, but for now get your shoulder to the wheel.  This is not our first performance crisis and it won’t be our last, as a collective, we need to be smart in dealing with these situations.

Everyone at Celtic Park (and beyond) knows this is not good enough, and there’s going to need to be big changes in the summer, but we need to get our act together and put the inquest on hold until the end of the season.

That’s a joke of an article Paul. I’m appalled at the tone.

You can’t expect the fans to get behind the team when the team, the manager and the board are not getting behind the fans.

The fans of our great club deserve far better than what we have right now.

I understand that you decided a long time ago that the board were doing the right thing by appointing RD as manager and I understand the cognitive dissonance that you must be feeling as the style of play and the attitude of the players has fallen away to dross under his leadership.

You find it hard to admit you were wrong and you’re trying to justify your prior support for RD when he clearly isn’t fit for purpose.

We’re all human, we all make mistakes, but don’t lay the blame at the door of the fans who know that change is needed and that the right decisions are not being made.

Backing the board and the RD style of play has been your error.

    Admit it and move on.

The fact remains that when things aren’t working you need to change.

The old adage is “if it ain’t broke then don’t fix it”

Well, it is broke, and it ain’t being fixed.

RD is repeating the same mistakes week in week out.

We can all see it and he has lost our support.

The team can win a lot of games because they are a talented group of individuals.

The team can also lose and draw a lot of games as the manager isn’t motivating them properly, isn’t putting the right tactics on the park, hasn’t solved the defensive problems and doesn’t seem to know what he is doing wrong.

Booing the manager’s decision to put a guy on the park who doesn’t want to play for the club any more when what we we needed was for someone to come on who would put his heart and soul into playing for the team isn’t something you should criticise.

You should be booing the manager too.

The team has no venom about it.

The shirts that are only supposed to shrink to fit superior players have expanded and now drown the players with RD at the helm.

Our players are now lost and hiding from the ball.

You would expect this to get them the heave ho, and yet they are, back on the park the very next game.

    It’s futile.

Assuming that the fans were booing JF or attempting to drive the narrative into blaming the fans for the draw is poor form from you and I have expected better from you as I have normally seen you as a moderate and a voice for change.

Nothing is being done to fix this problem. Nothing.

And if we lose the league then it’s not going to be down to a lack of passion from the fans.

Help us Paul, be the voice for change.

Stop supporting this inept management structure.

  3. Nice sentiments, Paul but……c’mon, yer saying that Scott Broon (either not fit, lost it or not playing for the manager), Charlie Mulgrew (either not fit, lost it or not playing for the manager) and Kris Commons (either not fit, lost it or not playing for the manager) are the one’s that we should be looking to to save our season.

An indication if you ever needed one of the greasy pole we are currently sliding down while desperately trying to climb back up.

Yeah, the players have let the manager down but the manager has let himself down. Last night was there was no direction, purpose or heart. from all concerned on the playing staff. We are unable to grind out a 1-0 as the effort or baws doesn’t seem to be there.

For the first time in a long time and I said this to Winning Captains last night is that we are going to blow this and there is nothing to suggest that we have substance to reverse this malaise.

Will be there in Sunday. CSC will lose a fortune – we had 14 spare season books last night! – spoke to others who are telling stories of empty buses, losing money and apathy of the SB holders. Will be at Partick, will be at Kilmarnock – after 5 mins of the game. More in blind faithfulness and rather than any logical hope.

This season has been soundtracked by radiohead and screaming. That first 30 mins against Malmo was a high point and seems so long ago that I need a deloren to get back to it…..

  9. The fans have had enough !

Unless coco the clown is replaced the flag will fly in Aberdeen.

When you have a problem, you find the root causes and fix them :

    – To win the league Deila has to go now

    – To start repairing the damage to the club from top to bottom Lawwell has to go in the summer. 10 years is too long for a CEO for a number of reasons.

    – At some point Dermot has to decide if he has any real interest in Celtic and if not find a way to put the club is safe hands

The fans will continue to what they have always done and support the Team. Last nite was pure pent up frustration coming out as much as the lifeless performance.

  10. The Mighty Quinn,

I backed RD. I thought at this point last season we were onto something.

I admit that it’s went pear shape and no longer seems to be working or going anywhere and that change is inevitable. Ive been waiting on his Mowbray moment since Molde (when I think the board decide that change in the summer – as advocated by this blog – was the thing to do).

Our board are many things but they are not stupid. They have been faithful to a fault with regards to managers. Again, the correct decision was probably giving RD to the end of the season but……that Mowbray moment is still the hangmans rope that the board are holding. It’s not back in the box.

So, I can admit I was wrong. So can others.

  11. Allyhuntersgloves on

    Dear Paul,

I don’t disagree with much you say on here, but in this case you are way off the mark. Like you I sat through that embarrassment last night, it was quite frankly a disgrace.

Celtic have made the number one mistake in these situations, if you are going to fail, then fail early otherwise it is costly and consequential. This guy has been a failure from day one, his list of failures can fill this blog.

I am not one for booing players or Celtic teams, however I could sense the frustration in the crowd last night who wanted (needed) something to happen. We are walking to the slaughter house, we will lose this league unless action is taken. The manager has lost it, his selections, tactics, ability to change, motivate etc have all gone, the place is empty, we can all see it, I’m sure even Ronnie sees it, he wants his pay off so he hangs in with banal statements about getting together and your “circling the wagons” . Pay him up and ship him out today !

Nothing we do in the current set up will stop the demise, its way beyond that now.

The end of the season is not the time to act, the time to act is NOW ! the manager must go, and go today, even if its a dead cat bounce it should be enough to see us over the line. The real work starts in the summer.

We cannot go into another game with this management team at the helm, we will lose this league. You and I wouldn’t allow this type of non performance in our work, Celtic should not either.

  12. Our club right now deserve better fans, this lot make me cringe, wouldent know class if it landed in they’r porridge, anyone who boo’d last night when James Forrest came on should be ashamed of them selfs, they where prob. At the game when Fergus unfurled the flag too, low life’s, I suppose that was ok to some in here as well?

No one is blameless at the moment imho we all need to pull together to get out of this rut and the players need to be first to show us they’re determination and win this league title.

Luckily the balls still in our court, but we need to stand together.

  15. overseasbhoy on

Why play Brown Mulgrew Rogic Armstromg ? All clearly unfit/too slow/off form ? Yet Christie Allan who show signs of promise and fast flowing football don’t get a look in? Surely we have an alternative to Lustig at right back too – he is off form terribly.

You are right about people who jeered Forrest and chanted Ronny GTF.

You are wrong to equate the above with people can see through Ronnys management ability and say so on a Celtic blog.

  17. Is there something badly wrong in the dressing-room – something as bad as what we are seeing on the field?

I honestly don’t know if there is – don’t know if the players have ‘downed tools’ on the management team.

But there is no doubt there is something fundamentally wrong – we are not witnessing a temporary loss of form, rather a turgid and gutless team, like no other seen in many years. We are NOT going down fighting – we are ‘rolling over’

There is now a huge disconnect developing between the fans and the club – because they don’t know what’s going on and are reacting angrily and hitting out in a wholly uncharacteristic way.

This has been a ‘lost’ season, with only small intermittent patches of form – it would be a shock to our systems if we lost the title, but alas not now a surprise.

We need some kind of message NOW from the club, NOW when there is still a chance to get back on course, NOW to reach out to the fans – we are hurting badly.

no doubt the idiots who bought into the whole ronny vision rubbish (despite not knowing the first thing about him) and then continued to support him no matter what, no matter how often, will protest and claim that we had no patience and cry “who will want to come to CP when we fired a boss who won the double”

Perhaps ask which manager will want to come to a club who has managed expectations down for a decade

or which manager wants to come and play at a stadium where the challenge is to get the fans back onside again?

But despite this persevering with Ronny makes as much sense as carrying on with Mowbray, barnes or macari did. He was NEVER a celtic manager. NEVER… A failed and costly experiment

OK, it’s not been a terrific start, but it’s been difficult for him, a new club, a new group of players, a new expectation. The performances will come when the circumstances settle down.

Some positives, some negatives, not much progress overall but he needs the chance to build his own team, use his own methods with his own players.

Hugely disappointing result given how important qualification was. But we’ve got the Europa League to develop the game, get it right, be ready for the next Champions League qualifiers.

We’re not seeing much evidence of improvement. Still making the same mistakes as before, still failing to win important matches against weaker teams. We need to start seeing improvement soon. I’m positive he knows what he’s doing though.

Recent results have been concerning, but we’ve had injuries and some players are off form. Saying that, I’m not so sure he knows what he’s doing, but overall we’re still on track to win the league. We can deal with it all in the summer.

Aberdeen will slip up. They won’t win more points than us over the remaining games. Trust me.

Aberdeen are too close for comfort. We can afford just one slip up in the remaining games, but our recent results aren’t inspiring confidence that we can win any given match, let alone most of them. Hmmm

The difference is down to perception. As long as we were 4 points about THEM then all was then. After their death, nothing but total domination is acceptable.

Loss of form is in no way acceptable.

I wouldn’t cry if the board replaced Ronny in May. However, I believe he has what it takes to secure the double.

James Forrest was never the bravest..bringing him on was a mistake. A player who is looking to leave isn’t going to burst a gut..go into 50/50s and maybe get himself injured and lose out on a big contract ands move.. He’s yesterdays man..much like Ronny.

Poor decision from a poor manager.

Kazim Richards has spent the majority of his career playing out wide

How many times does this need to be said?

I thought James Forrest has a year and a half to run on his contract ?
