Do as I say, not as I do. Paisley style

If the statement by Inverness chairman Kenny Cameron was utterly bizarre, St Mirren’s Stewart Gilmour explains so much about Scottish football.  10 days after Gilmour voted to refuse Sevco a parachute into the top flight of the game, he accused Scottish Football League clubs of doing damage to Scottish football by standing shoulder-to-shoulder with him in refusing to promote Sevco into an unearned higher league.

He told the Paisley Daily Express: “To be fair to Stewart Regan, the document he released last week was a good document.

“It set out changes to Scottish football that would bring in a fairer structure, fairer distribution system, fairer everything.

“Unfortunately, the people in the SFL have not bought into that. I just hope they realise the damage they have done to Scottish football.”

“The damage they have done to Scottish football”!

This guy is hilarious!  ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ has never been more animated.

I still see these hun aficionadaos pulling rank. There is no need for any of them being in the positions they are in. Quite simply they should be gone. Now since they are awe huns or de-facto huns why are they still in power dictating terms to the pewer wee teams that should have already fired their sorry cheating arses?

Incredibly this idiot is still getting a column in the newspaper.

Billy Dodds It has been another sobering week for everyone connected with Scottish football. In actual fact, I think Ally McCoist will in some way be relieved that he can now concentrate on the football side of things, but he has a massive amount of work to do before a ball is kicked. Firstly, there is the question of the playing staff. There wasn’t too much of a surprise when many of the big names decided that they would not be transferring over to the Charles Green-led consortium. But now there is a decision to make about just what is required to enable Rangers to progress through the leagues. Dorin Goian is the latest player to move on, and I would imagine that there will be a few more in the same boat. Rangers simply cannot pay anywhere near big salaries if they are sitting in the bottom tier of our game. I think the punishment dished out to Rangers has been draconian. They have been kicked by all and sundry these past five months. But one thing that will most certainly stick in the craw of chairmen up and down the country is if Rangers sell on guys – and someone like Lee Wallace comes to mind – and make a profit on them. Rangers eventually got Wallace for peanuts – I think they’ve only paid around £750,000 of the £1.5 million they bought him for – and it would seem wrong if they sold him on for a good return and pocketed the cash. But to me, there is no doubt that the club are going to have to press ahead with kids and hope that is sufficient to move up the leagues. There is no chance that the likes of Carlos Bocanegra and Maurice Edu are going to hang around in the Third Division – and there is equally no chance that Rangers would be able to pay them or many others that McCoist might have had his eye on, like Craig Beattie and Ian Black. The one guy that they may be able to hang on to is Lee McCulloch. Lee is different from the others in that he is at the end of his career and he will have made enough from the game to mean finances do not come into focus too much for him at this stage. He is one guy that Rangers could build a team around and let him lead. He has all the experience but he also has a real feeling for the club. That passion and determination will be vital over the course of the next few years because, whatever way you look at it, this is a disaster for everyone. You would always expect Rangers to draw significant crowds and there is a hardcore support that will turn out no matter what game or league. However, just how many fall into that category? I suspect it is in the hundreds rather than the thousands, largely due to the mistrust that continues to surround the newco. John Brown will have planted doubts in many minds and until there is more transparency I suspect supporters will be unwilling to part with money when they are unsure where it is going. It’s a surreal situation and it is one I’d never in my wildest dreams have envisaged. So I can only imagine how bizarre if must feel for Ally to have been preparing for the SPL title and trying to get Rangers into the Champions League with Europe’s elite just a year ago, and now to be plotting a course through the Third Division. It makes so little sense to me, but everyone had made it clear that they did not want Rangers anywhere near the top end of the game, so the bulk of these chairmen will have to be happy now. Only time will tell if their desire to penalise the Ibrox club to the very max also means that they too pay a significant price of their own. As someone who has crossed the divide from the playing side of things to being a pundit, I cannot help but be curious at what lies ahead in these next few months. The one thing I will say is that this could be the most important year ever in the history of Scottish football. It really is a critical 12 months that are ahead of us but I also have to say that there are many people who will question if Neil Doncaster’s position is tenable now. He wanted a change in the structure of the game and he also wanted Rangers in the First Division – he got neither. We are living in strange times and I just don’t know how long it will take for Scottish football to recover – if it ever will.

Now there is a bit in the middle that explores the rules but it was neccesary to make the point then. It was written just before Rangers went into administration but I would say its recommendations are even more needed now as a result of what has come out since and particularly the past few days. It is difficult knowing what we now know that keeping Rangers alive preceded the recent admiinistration and whilst we have no idea how far back that mission went, the SFA have questions to answer on how complicit they were in trying to safeguard Rangers future LAST season. Had Rangers remained in Europe, the promise of UEFA money would have allowed tax and NI to be paid and the administration event would,as most would have expected and planned for the much delayed FTT decision (and WHY is that taking so long?

So perhaps there are two factors driving the SFA, an honest belief the game is screwed without Rangers, a sectarian belief that those holding it are screwed without Rangers, a mixture of both, but also maybe the SFA simply do not want the part they played in the past to be closely looked at because it would destroy them

All organisations try to protect themselves, it is a natural survival mechanism.

The irony is that in losing to Malmo and Maribor on sporting merit grounds (no Scottish match officials involved) sporting merit did more than put Rangers out of UEFA competition, it subsequently sent out the message you ignore it at your peril.

  20. One of the most insulting aspects of this fiasco is the argument that clubs should support Sevco Rangers being delivered into the top tier of Scottish football because clubs are facing crippling financial debts.

It is principally because of RFC (corpus delicti) and in particular MR David Murray’s era that has brought about that very same crippling debt.

Further to this, it is the administrators of the game, who have delivered such an awful TV contract who are arguing the Sevco Rangers cause.

In short, Scottish football would be best served by jettisoning all these incompetent and corrupt people, start off again and hopefully recover in as short a time as possible.

With the integrity of some of the smaller club chairmen, I have hopes for the future.

  21. Margaret McGill on

I think without hunnery in SPL1 or SPL2 the huns are goners. Which means that the SFA/SPL/SFL management are goners which means there will be a new generation of Scottish football proposed with 20 teams nationally instead of 42 in the next year or two. Having 42 football teams in a country of Scotland’s size is ridiculous. Of course this will be fought against internally to the bitter end.

Hopefully, in that time frame (because we have to be thankful to the huns) HMRC will start going after EPL clubs with the same outcome for many. As EPL homogenization occurs the Scottish game will have by that time totally collapsed (thanks to the huns)

Ultimately I see a BPL in 20 years or less with Celtic, Hearts Hibs Aberdeen and Dundee Utd in it. Whether Sevco choppers make it depends

on how soon the current 42 get rid of their current executives in SFA/SPL/SFL.

Most English prats will assume that these Scottish teams will be cannon fodder for the EPL teams just like Wolves, Barnsley, Charlton, Swansea etc and so on ad infinitum. For most it will be true. However, one day the ultimate financial global and most supported team on the planet, the ubermensch team of the world with the proper administration will blow them into oblivion in a few years with EPL type funding.

However, any semblances left of the current footballing executive mob in Scotland today long term does not bode well for the long term future of Celtic. The illustrious Celtic bored need to get off their arses and facilitate the execution of the current executives of Scottish football pronto.

  24. Morning,

    An ‘Aunt Sally’ document! lol!

Aunt Sally will have found his level now they are in Third Division.

document prepared for the Scottish Football Association’s Board and

dated 18 June has been obtained by Scotland On Sunday. It was said by an insider to be the “culmination of weeks of talks between the SFA, SPL, SFL, oldco Rangers and then newco Rangers.”

The document is headed “Scottish FA:

Newco & Scottish Football, A Strategic

Review” and has Regan’s mark of authorship – on page 6, dealing with the “top ten risks to be addressed”, the

second “risk to be addressed” is said

to be “social unrest” which is the phrase used by Regan after the SPL voted not to allow newco Rangers into their league. It was this initial review which led to the proposals put forward by the SFA, SPL and SFL last week calling for the

restructuring of the professional game in Scotland, tied to the plan to put Rangers into the First Division.

As far back as 18 June, however, the authors knew they were in for

possible trouble with their plans. The risks to be addressed included “threat to solidarity payment [the £2 million paid to the SFL by the SPL] and future survival of 20 remaining clubs” – the first time the number of possible casualties has been

mentioned, amounting to almost half the 42 professional clubs in Scotland. On the last page under the heading

“Questions to Consider” the author asks: “What is the mechanic per

footballing body to approve a package

of measures out-with [sic] the rule book?” This is believed to be a

reference to the conflicts between the

SPL and SFL rule books on how to deal with a club going into

liquidation. Other questions are: “Does the Scottish FA need to call an EGM? Do we need unanimity to move forward – potential challenges as to whether we have powers to do this?”

Benefits of the package were that it would “show leadership for the game in Scotland” and avoid “a fan

    backlash” with “a positive media

outcome” – three “benefits” that did not accrue. In the bizarre lexicon of the SFA, the review is known as an

“Aunt Sally” document – it is actually referred to as such in SFA minutes – with controversial proposals put up

for discussion so that they can be accepted or rejected.

    From today’s Hunday Mail

‘Newco Rangers were dumped out of the SPL when the league’s members voted that they should be banished after going into liquidation.’

Newco weren’t dumped out of the SPL.

Newco have never been a member of the SPL. Never having been a member of the league they cannot have been dumped out of it.

Oldco will cease to be a member of the SPL because they are to be liquidated.

It’s like when a member of the ludge dies. That person ceases to be a member of the ludge because they have died, not because they have been dumped out of or banished from the ludge.

Newco haven’t been punished. On the contrary they have been shown favouritism in being fast tracked into the SFL despite not meeting the entry criteria.

What replaces them should be determined by the fans of the clubs who are the only people who have come out of this fiasco with any credit aside from a few minor execs such as Turnbull!

Having said that, it does not reflect well on them yet sums up Scotland perfectly that, as one of the two giants slipped slowly towards its inevitable death (the death throes have been epic), the other, more friendly, more approachable, generous and statesman like giant, felt it could say nothing to inspire the people of Scotland because, bizarrely, it is viewed by many (including most of those who welcomed the fall of the ugly, fat, odorous giant) as a fearful, hostile and primitve beast (an obvious case of deflection)!

I have no worries that Sevco will play in the SPL next year or SPL2. if they survive until the start of the season, it will be in SFL3.

But, as TET often reminds us, unless the current structure for appointing refs is altered, it may take many years (as Mr Forrest eloquently put it earlier), but the hun will be back to cheat us with vengeance in mind!

I assume that PL and friends are working away behind the scenes to effect the downfall of the unholy trinty of men/organisations but I would rather they vigorously pursue a get-out from playing in this visionary-less, tragic, small minded backwater of a country!
