Doors closing across Europe

318

I watched as passageway surfaces were wiped down at Celtic Park ahead of kick-off on Saturday, an early visible sign that a public health alert is on the horizon.  Actions will not stop at a bucket, cloth and a dash of Dettol.

Games are already being played behind closed doors in Italy and France.  Today’s total of confirmed cases in the UK is 285, France surpassed that figure five days ago, it is possible public events will face similar restrictions here within a week.  If Germany and Spain take similar restrictive measures in the next few days, the UK will inevitably follow.

Celtic have one home game between now and when the league resumes after the split on the weekend of 18/19 April, so there will be little commercial impact if games here are played behind closed doors, but there is a crucial Scottish Cup semi-final on 12 April.  We would all rather be there than watching on TV.

The issue is more likely to see complications for our players who travel across Europe and beyond on international duty this month.  France under-21s travel to Liechtenstein in two weeks, which is 160 miles from northern Italy.  We have more than a passing interest in that game.  The principality is served by air from Zurich; it is impossible to tell what travel arrangements will be like in central Europe at that time.

We should also spare a thought for those with the burden of financing community clubs, where survival worries will be very real right now.

VAR decisions are proving as inconsistent as referee decisions

    so whats the point?

  2. Have to say I am concerned about the news coming through from Italy. The British Government does seem a little lax in its efforts to contain the virus. It seems like we are heading for behind closed doors games for a number of weeks as a best case scenario. Worst case is the suspension of all matches which could be on the table in as little as two weeks. It’s important to understand that the Government are saying they now cannot contain the virus and will look to delay it until the summer.

If you wouldn’t get excited about a 1.5% chance of winning a few million in the lottery you must be on a much better wage than me. Can I get it if you win it?

    :)

VAR refs should be placed under large buckets of gunge. Each time they get it wrong the… better still their feet should be placed in tanks of water that automatically earths to an electricity supply each time they get it wrong. Yeah that should do it

The big shout for VAR came from its use in other sports where almost every decision involves a clear yes or no – over the line in tennis, pressure on the ball in rugby, outside the crease in cricket – in football we have the ‘intent’ which is subjective and the offside toenail which has only appeared because of the technological available.

This means that in football we still have ‘opinion’ in VAR – that way lies madness (and hunnery)

    😀

aye but my point is that if i had 1.5% chance of winning the lottery i would treat that as so unlikely that i wouldnt get excited about it

but to answer your question about whether you can get the money if i do win the lottery…

    no, you cannot

    Close decisions . OK.

Blatant anti – Celtic decisions from which we have suffered many times in the past……..

he is barred from the monty but has still been kicking about the other pubs because he is staying round the corner

i agree, he will get chased out

  12. Macjay

Yes, agreed – Would love to see a VAR decision or two re Jorge Cadettes goal at Ibrox or the two blatant penalties at the same cesspit the day James was booked and Lenny was halved. Add to that the farce that was Bougherra staying on the park after being booked in the first ten minutes and kicking everything in site fir the rest of the game.

and my beef about this isnt all about him. i would love to see the other person involved in the monty situation be shamed on the front page of the papers

If I had a 1.5% chance of winning the lottery and a few million, I’d buy 70 tickets and sit back waiting for the draw with 100% confidence of being a millionaire in the morning.

  15. There was an exchange on the live updates between two posters:

Some may have got the impression GERRYFTB had flounced; this was not the case he had been red carded. It was his second red card. He has now been issued a third red card.

    FAIRHILL BHOY:

Your apology to the blog this evening has saved you from a red card. Please do not bite in future, ignore and scroll.

    your confidence is misplaced

we could all have a 1.5% chance of winning it and buy 70 tickets each

so we would all win but the prize would be split so many ways that you wouldnt get enough each to buy a mojo

    Yes.

The blatant handball from Leigh`s header in the semi final against sumbdy.

Makes the adjudicators ACCOUNTABLE after the event when their decisions come under SCRUTINY.

If an error is blatantly obvious after the game , the referees adjudicating the error become subject to criticism and the ultimate sanction…………….They lose the job and the remuneration.

The hip pocket nerve comes into play .

    Finally , accountability .

    What`s not to like ?

Grew up listening to tales of goals disallowed when the ball was obviously over the line .

Bob Kelly’s book, imaginatively called ‘Celtic’ has a chapter called ‘the first disallowed goal’ – I’m away from home just now but I promise to post an extract.
