Duff and Phelps in Bobby Tait added time

165

With no bids on the table and no one prepared to pay a deposit to get an exclusive and detailed look at the books, Duff and Phelps are adding on extra minutes like referee Bobby Tait in the famous Rangers-Kilmarnock game on 2 May 1998.  Rangers needed a win to keep the pressure on Celtic but the game was scoreless after 90 minutes.  This was a time before referees indicated how many additional minutes they would play and Tait, on his farewell appearance as a referee at Ibrox before retirement, allowed the game to continue well beyond the anticipated period as Rangers battered at Kilmarnock’s goal.

In the 96th minute Ally Mitchell scored for Killie in a breakaway and Tait brought the game to an end soon thereafter.  There was nothing more the referee could do.  Duff and Phelps have gone beyond their self-declared last chance date but, like Tait, there is nothing more they can do.

If they cannot sell the company, and no one else is prepared to put money into it, they will need to accept that they cannot present the company in a saleable condition (long suspected here) and will have to bring an end to proceedings.  They cannot continue to spend creditors’ money without a viable strategy to earn a greater return.

I bet you remember where you were when Tait finally blew his whistle to end that game in 1998.  You’ll long remember the moment Duff and Phelps bring the curtain down on Rangers Football Club.

  5. Queen of the South are aiming to shock Scottish football, as they take on defending champions Celtic in this year’s Scottish FA Youth Cup final.

The Dumfries outfit go into Monday’s final at Hampden as massive underdogs but yet still remain optimistic about their chances of success.

It’s the first time that Queens under 19s have ever reached the final, ensureing that history will be made with Celtic heading for an equally historic third trophy on the trot.

It will take a lot to overcome the Parkhead side who have also won the under 19 league this season, but Queen of the South captain Scott Hooper told The Away End they remain in high spirits.

“There’s a mixture of nerves and excitement,” said Hooper. “We’ve got to look forward to playing Celtic but everybody knows how big the club is, so there is nerves. But, on the other hand, being in the final everybody’s exciting and buzzing for the game.”

Hooper has played with Queens most of his career and being a fan, it’s a memorable occasion.

He continued: “It’s brilliant for me, I’ve always wanted to be in a final and being a Queens’ lad it means much more to me. I’ll be fighting for everybody on the day.

Just being in the final is an achievement and everybody’s just going to relish and enjoy it.

“We can do it, we’re the underdogs, anything can happen. We’re out to win it.”

Queen of the South overcame Dundee United in the semi-final on Tuesday with Gavin Reilly’s extra-time winner settling a nine-goal thriller at Tannadice. With no fresh injuries and a fully fit squad, Queens will certainly give it their all in the hunt for silverware this season.

Reaching the final is an incredible achievement for the club and also for head coach, Stuart Rome – especially since it is his first season in charge of the under 19s.

Rome said: “It’ll be a formidable task as Celtic are a fantastic football club, but we’ve just got to go out there and give it our best shot as we did on Tuesday night.

“The boys put their selves against a quality football club of Dundee United and the great academy that they’ve got and the performance on the night was good enough to win the game. Hopefully on Monday we’ll put in that type of performance again and take something from the game, but it’s a formidable task.”

  14. Celtic’s under 19 coach John Kennedy has called on the experienced players to give a battling performance when they play in Monday’s Youth Cup Final.

For the third year in a row, Celtic have made it to the final, but standing in their way of retaining the cup is a stubborn Queen of the South side.

Both Kennedy and his assistant Tommy McIntyre were present at Tannadice and were impressed with what they saw, and say their experience will be crucial to gaining Hampden glory.

He said: “Queens have come under the radar and they’re certainly not to be underestimated as we haven’t played these guys before. They deserved their win on Tuesday, they showed great character and commitment and had chances to win the game.

Celtic are no strangers to lifting the Scottish FA Youth Cup

“We were impressed with what we saw they had great spirit in abundance, very quick wingers and a very clever striker made life hard for the Dundee United defenders and took his opportunity well.

“Five goals against Dundee United is a good feat, and they could easily have scored more. They certainly are a threat going forward so we will need to be wary.”

Celtic came from behind to beat St. Mirren 4-1 in the semi-final, a performance that assistant coach Tommy McIntyre believed wasn’t their best.

However Kennedy believes that the squad has the depth and desire to retain the cup for the second year running.

He said: “Coming in to a final it can be interesting, we’re preparing as if it’s any other game. We’re fortunate that some have experienced the final before, so I’d be looking at them to share some of their experience onto some of the younger players who haven’t played at Hampden before.”

Celtic will be without their striker Anthony Watt who picked up two bookings in the victory over St. Mirren, and his talent was made clear to Celtic fans as he made a stunning debut for the first team at Fir Park on Sunday.

Paul George (broken leg) and Philip Twardzik are also sidelined through injury. However, Kennedy says the mentality within the squad remains strong.

He continued: “All season the mentality has been about the squad and not the eleven on the field. Everyone has filled in and done a great job. Two or three have come in and it does give us coaches a selection headache, the priority is to win the tournament and the players are aware of that.

“Whether its Rangers, Queen of the South or Hibernian we have to be prepared, because if we’re not we’ll be in for a shock.”

Captain Jackson Irvine also remains cautious ahead of the final, and urged his teammates not to underestimate their lower division opponents.

Irvine said: “After the game against St. Mirren everyone was straight back into league mode, and focused on the task in hand, taking each game at a time. It’s been good to finally know whom we’re playing so we can prepare fully for Monday’s final.

“Complacency is something we cannot have, the cup final is one game of football and anything can happen. We maybe favourites but we have to control the outcome.

“They’ll be running on pure adrenaline after their win on Tuesday. Dundee United is a tough place to go for any team, especially for a first division team to come away with a result as impressive as that is certainly an achievement.”

Furthermore, Irvine shed light on his career ambition and reflected on the opportunities given to him in the season.

“The overall ambition is to develop into the first team,” he added. “I’ve been lucky enough to have trained with them on many occasions this season, but this year we’ve seen players like Marcus Fraser make his debut against Rennes, Paul George against Ross County and Filip Twardzik against Kilmarnock.

“It’s things like that, that gives the squad great motivation and have things to aspire to.”

Bobby Tait – Ally Mitchell Day

I was on the 9th hole playing in the Monthly medal at my golf course.

Me and a mate were playing with a stranger we didn’t know , who happened to be regaled in some mix of red , white and blue. Some small talk in the early holes about football , but nothing much. Walking up the 9th I started to tune into the radio on my Walkman ( that’s a prehistoric I-pod for any youngsters reading), and heard the commentator saying 90 mins were up. Turned it off , played the hole , and as the last of us putted out to finish the 9th , I turned it back on to hear “GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL , ALLY …..(was expecting McCoist)…….MITCHELL”. I screamed “Killie scored” at my mate and we hugged and both ended up rolling about on the green laughing our heads off.

Remembering where we were we got up , dusted ourselves down and strolled casually to the 10th tee , where our now raging playing partner grunted that he had already teed off and would we mind hurrying up……..no problem big chap.

  21. D&P preparing the hordes for liquidation?

“It is all very well for some parties to talk in terms of delivering a Company Voluntary Arrangement. That is an administrator’s primary objective.

“However, that can only be delivered successfully if it is agreeable to creditors and it is fair to say that certain bids that have been submitted may not have been approved by creditors.

“It is deeply regrettable that some parties have continued to present their bid as being a solution when it clearly was not the case.

“In terms of timing, we believe that should an unconditional bid be made that would meet creditors’ approval and a CVA process could begin, the club could emerge from administration within a period of two months and certainly prior to the commencement of next season.

“If we proceed with an offer that is based on a sale of the business and assets, then we would expect the football club share to be transferred within a matter of weeks, with a preference of prior to the end of the current season.

“We fully understand and share the frustration of the fans. However, we cannot ignore the fact that while they wish to see an exit from administration there is a not a bid on the table now that will deliver that.

“Everyone should also bear in mind that if that is not achievable then we have to look at all options to keep the club going.

“What would be the worst outcome is neither party deciding they wish to carry on. It is therefore not in the club’s interest for people – failed bidders and concerned supporters – to be generating hostility to bidders who are trying to secure the club’s future.”

  24. DUFF AND PHELPS, the administrators of Rangers Football Club, issued the following statement today.

David Whitehouse, joint administrator, said: “We have continued intensive discussions with interested parties over the weekend.

“The Blue Knights and Bill Miller have asked for a further short period of time to finalise their plans for the club prior to any announcement on a preferred bidder.

“At this stage neither party has currently made an offer that is capable of acceptance by the administrators and we can only move forward when we have an offer on the table that can be concluded following a period of final due diligence.

“In broad terms, the Blue Knights are trying to resolve issues regarding the structure of their proposed funding partnership with Ticketus as well as conducting further analysis of player contracts.

“The proposed bid from Mr Bill Miller is, as he made clear on Friday, subject to specific conditions.

“Both bidders have raised with us their strong desire to attain greater clarity on potential footballing sanctions the club may face and these remain issues to be resolved.

“We believe that both bidding parties have the best interests of the club in mind and, frustrating as though it is for fans, it is better that these complex issues are addressed now rather than later.

“It is imperative that whichever offer is taken forward can be delivered. For the avoidance of doubt, neither bid involves liquidation.”

Paul Murray, of the Blue Knights, said: “Frustrating though this is for everyone with the interests of the club at heart, the Blue Knights are supportive of the administration process and we think it is right the administrators are giving parties left in the race the opportunity to finalise their plans.”

Ally McCoist said: “It has been a frustrating time for everyone associated with the club but I would ask our fans to stick with us for a few more days as we should have a clearer idea of where we are.

“The administrators are working hard behind the scenes in very difficult and complex circumstances to ensure the future of Rangers Football Club.”

Andy Kerr, President of the Rangers Supporters Assembly, added: “Our fans are frustrated by the further delay but hopefully the issues can be resolved in the next few days.

“I’m sure every effort is being made to make progress and it is vitally important that we have clarification soon. It would be helpful if supporters allow Duff and Phelps to get on with their work at this crucial time.”

David Whitehouse added: “Because of what has happened at Rangers, the football authorities too have a difficult task as there are many unprecedented issues to deal with.

“This is a complicated administration due to recent and historical events at Ibrox and while everyone wants to see a solution brought about quickly there is a need to grasp the reality of the situation.

  25. Tait moment –

early afternoon I had dropped my wife and mother in law at the forge and I took a run around the East End pubs and Celtic park trying to get tickets for the Dunfermline game the next day. This was well before the result came through.

Often in them days, it was still a novelty for a game to be on a Sunday, and I hadnt got tickets in the ballot for Dunfermline.

No joy on the search I went back to Parkhead and sat listening to the Huns game in the car park, about 10 minutes to go I went from there to the forge to get the missus.

    Still 0-0.

Parked car and went through the centre, got to one of the TV shops and watched the Vidi printer. There were about 30 people staring at the bank of tvs.

They actually went over to the Full Results service, thats how late the Huns game was.

Ticker tape moment at the bottom of the Screen.

    Rangers 0 Kilmarnock 1.

Massive cheer went up in the shopping centre.

I went ticketless to Dunfermline the next day, 3 of us, we didnt get in.

    Easily another 1,000 didnt.

We watched the game at a TV van on the hill behind the enclosure.

Donnelly scored, the gates opened with about 10 to go.

We ran in, got to the stairs, and Falconbridge scored.

Long way home through wee Hun towns, but we partied even more the following week.
