Celtic are at their best when they are up against it, when everyone knows that nothing short of a herculean effort is required. This is the case tomorrow. The requirement is straightforward enough: win your personal battle, inhibit one of the best teams we will play this season, take control of midfield and find spaces in the Ajax defence to exploit.
We have more than enough players bursting to set about this task.
Ajax had a taxing game on Saturday, scoring late to secure a draw away to top of the table Twente. Although fourth, they are one of six teams no more than two points off the pace in what is currently one of Europe’s tightest leagues, but there is a fragility about Ajax.
The game against Twente was their first away match after a run of four home games, three of which were won comfortably, while they were denied a win against Milan by a ridiculous penalty in added time. Their away form, however, has been less than impressive; they are still waiting for their first win away from the Amsterdam ArenA this season. As a result, they travel to Celtic Park with the same trepidation they travelled to Groningen, Heerenveen, Twente, AZ, Barca and PSV, a series of games which returned three draws and three defeats.
Dutch media have also been reminding them of a quirky record to maintain. While Celtic eliminated Ajax the last twice the teams met in European Cup/Champions League duty, the Dutch avoided defeat on both games at Celtic Park. For us, this is a meaningless fact, but it is an added burden of expectation on Ajax.

As I said on here before, the main entertainment companies in Glasgow, they know who they are, all pay minimum wage to their catering and bar staff.
Not Living wage….Minimum wage, currently 6.19 per hour
Check with BB’s tomorrow and if he’s not paying living wage, don’t drink there. I think you will struggle to find a single bar in Glasgow that does. Or anywhere else, for that matter.

It’s never simple, is it. So, in effect, you can end up arguing for people to be paid less money. That’s not right. And it can’t be used as justification for paying low wages. What’s the justification in paying people very large amounts of money for doing their job? No-one is unique enough to be entitled to thousands of pounds a week.
As far as I know Celtic FC haven’t given the benefits/housing trade off as the reason for opposing the resolution. They just oppose it.
Realistically, I doubt whether they know the personal circumstances of their employees or of sub-contracted staff who work on their behalf or unfortunately have even thought this issue through fully.

Too right. Almost certainly they are working for the catering company who has the contract, and may even be further subcontracted through an agency and may work at other venues.
It may be possible for Celtic to insist their rates are Living Wage while at CP.

I am truly astounded of forehead that any Celtic supporter woud not be critical of the club for not paying the living wage, especially since it would cost only circa £120,000 pa to do so. It is even more galling when one of the highlights of the AGM will be how fantastically well we have done financially.
Sorry to harp on about this, but I believe so strongly that we are a special club with an ethos of fairness in all things. Paying poverty wages isn’t fair.

In fact, I’m nowhere near the ‘big boys’ league but refuse to pay the minimum wage and always will. I set the rates based on a few factors, but that its not one of them.

I’ve seen in Swindon how Employment Agencies can destroy the living standards of an entire town,previously a high-wage one.
With the employment situation as it is now in the UK in general,and the squeeze on benefits,employers are largely happy to pay someone else to find staff for them,as it removes the need to offer them a contract of employment. And people have to take what is on offer.
No comeback when they get paid off at the drop of a hat,little chance of union protection. Disgraceful state of affairs,we are really back in a 1980’s scenario when your boss would literally tell you you were lucky to have a job.

You are correct when you point out Celtic are not alone with these employment practces. These working conditions have been slowly introduced in the UK over the past couple of decades, with little or no opposition from a largely lethargic public.
You are wrong when you say ‘this does not make Celtic a bad employer’. Celtic and every other employer who exploit their workforce are very much ‘bad employers’.

That’s not in any way what I meant, but hey-ho
If a few lads & lassies are being brought in for match days and are more or less on a nixer, working on pie stalls etc, I don’t think its a huge moral issue if they are on a minimum wage. However anybody who works for The Club and whose wages from that work constitutes their main income should at least get the higher minimum living wage.

Richie, I had many heated arguments with many socialist friends at the time that the minimum wage was brought in. I didn’t think it was a good idea then and don’t now.
Can someone tell me how every worker should get the “living wage”, but for those who are unemployed they will receive less than the “minimum wage”.
In times of high unemployment and global economic recession I think people need to choose which fight they want.
The living wage is not one of mine.
If 10 employees receive the “living wage” rather than the “minimum wage” maybe some companies will employ one less person, is this really what people want?

Are we talking about minimum legal wage or somebodies perceived living wage?
A persons labour is worth exactly what a potential employer is prepared to pay for it on a given day which is determined by supply and demand. Nothing else.
Your overheads become too great then eventually you will go out of business…its easy. Do it with jam jars or do it on spreadsheets but the result is the same.
This whole concept of charitable causes etc has been hi-jacked by certain elements for their own agenda’s it seems.
What was started as a desperately needed charitable excersize by Brother Walfrid became a commercial venture soon after. He never made any recorded utterances about this development that I am aware of?
We are different in as much as we were started to feed desperate people while everyone else was doing it for the popular entertainment profit….just like the cinema but we need to realise we are commercial enterprise too.
The same people who want unskilled manual labour to be paid 12 pounds per hour no doubt want season books for 250 or less and CL trophy winning team I imagine?
Where is the money coming from? You can’t reduce your incoming revenue while simultaneously increasing your overheads. If it won’t work for a sole trader with his own van
then why do certain people think it will work at Celtic where we need something like 30M per annum just to stand still?
