Dysfunctional Amsterdam

770

Three weeks ago there was little argument against the observation that Ajax had the worst European travelling support we have seen at Celtic Park – half a century of history.  Attacks on Celtic fans by a roaming gang on Tuesday night was not a surprise.  The banner, which Uefa are trying to ignore, but will surely be shamed into doing something about, was offensive and, in most jurisdictions, a criminal offense.

When the police collaborate it’s hard not to verge into the realms of branding a society “dysfunctional”.  Amsterdam is wealthy, affluent, liberal but intolerant, badly policed and violent.  The visit of Celtic fans passed with less incident (and arrest of visitors) than most visiting fans endured in recent seasons.

Visit Bruges instead.

Good interview with Neil on Celtic TV. Confirmed Sammi is out for tomorrow – said Sammi declared himself fit for Wednesday. Clearly wasn’t ready imo. Unhappy that the team have to travel 3 hours on the coach to Ross County for a 12.15 KO tomorrow. Had no time to prepare his team and the players have had the bare minimum of recovery time. Hinted that he will be looking to freshen up the starting 11 tomorrow. Hope he does.

I’d guess Lenny’s idea of freshening up the starting 11 is not the same as what we think of as freshening up. Hope I’m proved wrong tomorrow.

I think the notion that Ajax are a Jewish team is nonsense nowadays. They originally had a Jewish following but those days are long gone.

That wouldn’t explain why Israeli flags were readily available to buy at numerous stalls around the ground on Wednesday night.

So far refrained from commenting but have to say there was a strange atmosphere in Amsterdam this time around. Having said that, there was nothing to suggest what happened was going to happen.

Bhoys and Ghirls, looking for support with a very Important Fundraising initiative for my Daughter.

Laura is a member of HCPT 77, from this year, having been in the Scottish Youth Group section for several years, ( a life changing experience for not only Laura, but the children who attend) acting as an entertainer for Children with special needs, disability, or underprivileged etc, on an annual Easter week Pilgrimage to Lourdes.

This year is different, her first year as an adult helper, and allowed to fully sponsor and support 24/7 a child throughout this trip.

To allow this to take place, she needs to raise £1000 by December, to fund the Child.

We are looking to run over the course of the next week, a Football Card,

50 teams and £10 for a team, with a very special prize. ( we can add more teams if more contribute)

“The Calm before the Storm” a 44″ * 32″ portrait of the Nakamura free kick goal scored against Man utd on 21st November 2006, ( it was £500 when bought)

If you would very kindly like to support this, please drop a note to

  8. Ajax and Amsterdam have diminished

themselves as a football club and a city.

Celtic are far bigger than both.

    We are Celtic.

The biggest and best football club in the world.

That is so sad mate, but I know exactly how you feel. I didn’t go to Amsterdam, basically because I travel with my son (14) at the moment. How sad that true enjoyment of football is stifled by cowards.

there was a space between the @ and the “hotmail”…. remove that and it works ok

  13. Feeling a bit down about the Ajax result and the fallout – but just caught the wee Lubo vignette on the Celtic website and boy, does that cheer you up. Skill, vision, poise and balance; I loved to watch him play, a true and proper footballer.

  14. Shieldmuir Celtic on

The time has come for our club to hit back at the disgracefully biassed Scottish media ‘This ranges from B.B.C. (Scotland ) T.V. which for the last two nights has led on their evening news with unbalanced reports from Amsterdam, to the Daily Record which devoted its whole front page to ‘The Battle of Amsterdam’ as if it was World War 3.These are the same people who virtually ignored the rampaging across Europe of our neighbours across the river. In particular they were silent on their last visit to Barcelona, after which the Mayor wrote to the S F.A. and R –gers telling them that their supporters would no longer be welcomed in his city and accused them of rampaging through The Ramblas and urinating on the treasured cathedral of Gaudi. The Scottish Media were rather silent about that disgrace. I think the time has come to put them in their place as without us they have nothing.
