Efe the enigma, when our heroes get ill

480

The challenge Efe Ambrose will face should he proposed move to Hibs go through will be considerably less taxing that what he faced in the Premiership, or in Europe, with Celtic. Efe will go down in folklore as another African Cup of Nations enigma.

He was part of the heroic story against Barcelona in November 2012, before heading to the African Cup of Nations two months later. That tournament would see the player achieve the peak of his continent’s football Kilimanjaro. He played right back for champions, Nigeria.

That was on the Sunday. By the Tuesday he had been flown across the globe and made the starting line-up for Celtic in their Champions League last 16 game against Juventus. Two minutes into the game Efe was caught underneath the ball and out of position, Juventus exploited the lapse to the full.

As far as Efe’s time at the top goes, that was that. Since then his form has been on a pronounced downwards trajectory. The thing is, he’s still only 28. There was a player of considerable value in there one. If someone can bring focus to him, there may be again.

A word on matters relating to illness and medical information of our heroes…………

Pretty much everyone knew of Billy McNeill’s condition for some time but thankfully, it wasn’t subject to online speculation. There are a few guidelines on health matters which are worth observing:

Health is a private matter and should not be discussed online unless and until the person or family decide otherwise.

While we feel close to our heroes and will naturally want to offer support at a time of need, serious illness is the most private of matters, it is wholly inappropriate for a former footballer to hear his condition is a matter of public knowledge.

A bereavement should only be ‘revealed’ online by someone acting on the explicit instructions of the family. The unofficial release of this type of news is a very regretful manifestation of the internet age.

In recent years, we have seen many occasions of older celebrities’ deaths being incorrectly reported, then retweeted and retold thousands of times before it is denied. For an ill person and their family this can be a horrific experience.

The world can do without our condolences for a couple of hours until the family concerned have been able to contact all members.

These guidelines are scrupulously followed by the mainstream media in Scotland, who will hear of a footballer’s bereavement but hold the news – and prepare their reaction – until the family are ready.

For former-Celtic players, the club will usually be in touch with the family and release the news at the appropriate time. If you want to express your condolences, prepare your thoughts but hold until an official announcement.

TD67…thanks for posting the Vojvodina clip. Made me feel quite sad really, but in a nice kind of way. My dad (who passed away last year) and I were in the enclosure near the tunnel. Just knowing we were in that fuzzy picture hugging each other…ach! I can feel a tear coming now….

VFR …. best and worst ‘airport’ experience for me….. both LAX ….

worst …. flying to Thailand … somehow they gave us the wrong information, and we were sent to the wrong terminal to wait …. our bags were loaded, so they couldn’t take off, but we were no where to be seen …. eventually, we sorted it out, but our plane was waiting, and we were many terminals (and miles ) away on the other side of the airport …. they got one of those little carts, and put the sirens on, so we could get through the airport! crazy day !

best …toronto to oz ….as I recall, we did the overnight from Toronto to LA … arrived in the LA the next morning …..but there was at least a few hours lay over in LA ….. so we decided to break up the trip a bit ….. so, we decided to push our sydney flight to that evening, and go to the beach for the day! details are a bit sketchy, but we ended up with a day in LA …

hopped in a cab, and spent the day going up the coast of california …. saw a few beaches, had a nice dinner … and then back to the airport for the trip to oz ….nice and relaxed for the flight to sydney. made what can be a very long and tiring trip into a bit of a very nice mini-vacation! i

Perhaps the family of Mr. McNeill may take solace in the fact that the reason he has been discussed continuously of late points to the love, the high regard and unwavering respect folk of all walks of life have for him, his leadership qualities and high standing as a human being in general.

    TD67,

Don’t know if anyone offered any explanation as to why we wore the green strip that night.

I presume it was Vojvodina wore white.

If I remember correctly, there was a time, certainly in Scottish Cup matches, when in the event of a colour clash, the home team changed.

That may have been the case in Europe, too. But I’m only guessing and didn’t want you to feel ignored and neglected. : > )

So no one on CQN knows why we didn’t wear the hoops the night we played Vojvodina at Celtic Park in 67 I take it, seen as know one answered me, or is it my deodorant?

  11. Good luck to Efe

He came, he played very well in a lot of games alas but for a few high profile errors. Always gave 100% of his ability in every game. Loved the acassional summersault after he scored.

Hope you come up with Hibs next season and hit the heights of top 4 clubs below the Bhoys Aberdeen & St Johnston.

  12. Agree that Lenny picking Efe for the Juventus game was naive at best.

A man, however, that never hid, and gave his all in any game he played. Unlike some others from last season, I may point out, who’s reputations remain unscathed. and are still being picked by the various teams they play for.

Efe loves the Hoops was never deserving of the hysteria that pointed his way.

It’s fitting that Lenny now offers him a place in his squad and a chance to play.

  18. 16 ROADS – CELTIC ÜBER ALLES… on 28TH FEBRUARY 2017 10:06 AM

I wish Efe Ambrose all the good luck in the world. The past is the past, he should never have asked to play in that game against Juventus though – practically straight off a plane from Africa. Remember the outstanding Celtic footballer he was prior to said game.

*said that more than a few times on here, in fact if my memory serves me well the manager had said the day before that due tae the amount of travelling after the game on the Sunday night Efe would NOT be available for selection, naw no even on the bench.

Imagine my surprise tae see him in the line up. What has also gone unnoticed is that the big mhan didnae go tae any celebrations with his team mates after their cup win but straight tae the airport. That shows tae me at least a consummate professional.

At the post match press conference when asked why he played Efe Lenny allegedly replied that he asked the big mhan how he felt about playing, this was Juve in the CL and on a high after winning an AFCON medal so he wisnae likely tae say “naw I’m a wee bit cream crackered boss”.

The wrong mhan has been criticised far too often on here and other Celtic sites, why do we make the smsm’s job too easy for them.

Winning Captains (from last night)…1956 was the first year I was taken regularly to see the Bhoys, so, yes, I remember John Jack. I recall he was referred to as a Bellshill Lithuanian. As a kid I believed all Lithuanians were in Lithuania, Bellshill or the Gorbals…Whilst visiting my mother (98yo) this morning I asked her if she knew the name J J. “Wasn’t he a footballer, played for Celtic? Your aunt Theresa (Bellshill Lithuanian) knew the family.” And that, unfortunately, is all I can tell you. It is a generation that has died out. My dad was the Godfather for a while, the last surviving member of our family…wish i could tell you more.
