Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

    ten men won the league

Point taken. I must’ve been misinformed as I read the goalposts were brought down. They were swinging from them though. I don’t see it as a huge difference to be honest. You’re not allowed to enter the field of play before during or after the match. You’re not allowed to bring smoke bombs or flares into a stadium. Don’t be scared to criticise bad behaviour.

I read someone yesterday compare the pitch invasion to Lisbon 67. The undiluted joy of our finest hour compared to beating Brentford in a friendly. Ridiculous comparison.

As for “Celtic bashing”, get a grip mate. You sound like a loon from FF and their “Rangers haters” nonsense.

How would you feel if English fans invaded our pitch and started swinging from the goal posts?

    Derbyshirebhoy,

You’re right, of course. Too many on here too often are too complacent about when our support act like idiots. They can’t see the bigger picture. Maybe they don’t want to. They’ll defend to the last our right to set off flares (just high spirits crap), sing rebel songs (they’re not sectarian) and any other nonsense. That others may find this offensive doesn’t matter. That others who matter might not want us to join their league because of this behaviour doesn’t seem to concern them one jot.

Couldn’t agree more. Maybe you have to be of a certain age before that sort of concern for how others view you kicks in.

    ———————————————————————————–

You wonder if some of the views on here would be so relaxed if it had been Sevco fans on the pitch….

I am 53 years of age so your certain age theory fails, and I can assure you I aint deluded either, you see the invasion of the pitch as harmful to the image of the club, fair play, that’s your take, but leave the name calling out eh?.the poster that started the debate and again he is entitled to his opinion, no problem with that either, but to compare it and make it more serious than 10 years of hun cheating, biting and scratching their way to money and trophies, is in my opinion ridiculous..

    Masty

    53? A mere babe in arms:>))

With due respect name calling is a bit strong. You will see if you read back that I attempted to close of the discussion last night with an attempt at humour. Ah well some fell on stony ground!

Please explain the relevance of hun cheating to this issue. Why do we always need to reference them? Have we not got the moral courage to call out faults in ourselves or do we not acknowledge them for fear of giving away something to the other side? I want us to play out of Scotland to get away from this self destructive obsession with them. Causing concern amongst those who have the power to make that happen is not a good thing in my view so I’ll carry on saying it.

You were misinformed? So you haven’t actually properly researched your story before letting rip?

The flares are wrong. Of course they are. Aside from that, check the English match reports of the game and then come back and see how they ‘portray’ the Celtic support.

We’ll be invited back next year. No shadow of a doubt.

I stand by what i said. It’s Celtic bashing. For what reason only you can answer.

  7. Scandalous reporting from the ‘Scum’.

Jack Irvine involved by any chance?

Celtic need to have a word with them – if they haven’t already.

The reaction to this fire is quite interesting – nay sinister. There is a lot of innuendo already and, as I said earlier, even quotes from the Sevco manager – before any facts have been established.

It’s almost like the response to this incident has been choreographed –Media House appear to be calling the shots once more.

I think you are in danger of taking things out of context.

Sorry don’t understand what you mean. Can you elaborate?

“One incident such as this is one incident too many if you want to encourage others to invite you to enter their playground”

I thought the above quote was from you. If so, it appears to indicate that events at Griffin Park will prevent Celtic from being invited to England.

Did I pick that up wrong?

pfayr-Leckie and The Sun should have been banned for the Coughgate slur, and as you posted earlier the BBC should have been made to apologise after the SC Final lies.

  17. It seems that the author of the Sun’s Sevcobus fire story, Cameron Hay, is the son of Sevco media consultant Gordon Hay – a coincidence, I’m sure.

  18. Honest cover up…,

What’s so ridiculous about the comparison ?

It was just a game of football and the supporters invaded the pitch just like they did yesterday

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

What wa the Sun story about the bus? Don’t particularly want to go onto their site.

  20. So the Sevco bus is now a zombie too?

In the real world – does any yet know the exact date and time of the first leg v Elfsborg?

Or do we have to wait until Cliftonville are disposed of?

  21. everything must be seen in context, comparing a group of celtic fans going onto a pitch in a friendly manner with the defunct rfc entering the pitch like only they do is like comparing the crusades to stage do. opinions are like arseholes, everyone has one.

the bhoys that travel with the celtic always do themselves proud, have been to a few away grounds in England and all in all the whole day is very good with few problems, though it is common for a couple of right wing locals to try to cause trouble.

Seemingly published the story about the Sevco bus going up in flames with quotes from Ally Absolutely saying the polis should get these people with two or three photos in the story of Celtic fans at Brentford.

Jack Irvine or Hay McKerron’s paws are all over it.

  23. Folks time to get real.

Is it realistic to expect impeccable behaviour from a crowd no matter who they support?

How do we measure what is unacceptable? By the numbers involved, by the number of arrests by the number of injuries, the degree of violence?

There are no objective measures in place, it is all subjective and the triggering event means what the observer wants it to mean.

In that sense it is great for blogging debate but yesterday’s event will soon become the equivalent of fish supper wrapping paper.

Much more insidious is the ochestrated attempt to demean the good name of Celtic and whilst that is going on I suggest we circle the wagons because the indians are out there, not inside the circle

That is not to deny the legitimate feelings of individuals at what they observed but to say put them aside for now and watch out for the arrows coming in.

  24. glass – sun ran a story about rfc bus getting torched, littered the story with pics from brentford friendly but no reference to celtic in text. Typical hun propoganda insinuating it was a celtic fan who done it.

Yet celtic fans will be back buying it tomorrow as per usual no doubt…
