Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

Saints are snubbed in bid to land Celtic striker Watt on loan

Jul 20 2013 by Jeff Holmes, Paisley Daily Express

St Mirren have been thwarted in a bid to bring Celtic striker Tony Watt to Paisley on loan, Express Sports can reveal.

Buddies boss Danny Lennon had hoped to boost his attacking options by luring 19-year-old Watt to St Mirren Park ahead of the new season.

However, he was left disappointed as the Hoops refused to sanction the loan deal.

Lennon told Express Sports: “Every manager in the world wants to improve his squad – no matter how happy he is with the players he already has – and, when I discovered that Tony might be available, I made an enquiry about getting him on loan.

“It turns out that’s not an avenue Celtic wish to go down at the moment, so there will no movement on that front.

“Tony is at a fantastic football club and I’m sure he will want to stay and fight for his place. I just hope he realises that he has an incredible opportunity there.”

Watt, who started his career at Airdrie United, is viewed as one of Scotland’s most promising young strikers.

He made headlines around the world in November last year when he scored a sensational winner in a 2–1 home victory against mighty Barcelona while making his Champions League debut.

It had been suggested that Celtic were keen for Watt to be farmed out on loan so he could gain more first team experience.

However, earlier this week, Hoops gaffer Neil Lennon admitted his star striker Gary Hooper was heading for the Parkhead exit as English clubs eyed up a big-money move for his services.

And Watt was drafted in as a substitute for Celtic’s Champions League qualifier against Cliftonville in Belfast on Wednesday night.

Now, with the SPL kick-off just two weeks away, St Mirren will have to look elsewhere as they seek to strengthen their squad.

Lennon said: “I’m always interested in good players and there are some I would like to bring in but whether that would be on loan or permanent remains to be seen.

“The deal has to be right and the price has to be right but, until the transfer window shuts, there is always that possibility of movement within the squad.”

If you were the insurance company you would be looking into the previous history of financial scams of both the Oldco and the Newco. If they do get paid out only three things will happen: 1: They replace the bus with a new one that cost the same money. 2: They buy a 22 seater mini-bus for about £30k and sink the other £470k 3: They don’t replace the bus atall and revert back to hiring coaches for their travels and sink the full £500k. If they choose options 2 or 3 then they are at it.

Classic album when the Stones were at their best – imo of course. From the mid 60s to the mid 70s they were superb – again in my opinion.

You’re right that we are where we are. I’m just concerned that in the longer run if we remain in Scotland our level will descend to meet the level of competition we face. I don’t agree about the fare in the EPL. Yes there are games which bore but the overall standard is very watchable. Its impossible to say that about the SPL. As I’ve said – if its Celtic I’ll be watching but though I do try occasionally to watch other matches those worth a look are few and far between.
