Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

No you didn’t. I just wasn’t sure that I was clear what you meant by context.

I presume then that your comment implies that events such as yesterday would have no effect on opinion amongst decision makers?

  2. I hope that given their recent track record, and that of the Record too, no Celtic fan will ever buy either or visit their websites again. And CFC management need to ban the Sun immediately. Deny them anything and everything.

Follow the example set by the good people of Liverpool…

  3. Derbyshirebhoy,

I’ll go one further, I’d say it had an impact, a very positive impact, both brentford and the police will testify to that.

  4. G’day Celts,

Any news about Scottish footballs cheating association or are we still on the fabricated wishful thinking from the Hun media.

    Love n kisses CSC

Apparently someone said that England is about to claim the ashes.

    ten men won the league

Hardly letting rip mate. Expressing a take on it like yourself. There is some misinformation and exaggeration going on, I’ll accept that.

You yourself have said the flares are wrong, so it is flares -bad, pitch invasions-good?

As for the “Celtic bashing”, is Neil Lennon guilty of it too after his comments?

I genuinely can’t think of a reason why I would be celtic bashing. You’ve got me there! Maybe me and Lenny are secret Sevconians hell bent on tarnishing Celtic’s name and we don’t even realise it ;-)

    Honest cover up…,

What’s so ridiculous about the comparison ?

It was just a game of football and the supporters invaded the pitch just like they did yesterday

See that’s how far we’ve slipped in the European game. Even you can’t tell the difference between a 2-1 win over Brentford and a 2-1 win over Milan in a European Cup Final,so you’re right it’s not fair to blame the fans. they obviously don’t know the difference either.:>))))

    Auldheid,

I don’t think anyone wants to make a mountain out of a molehill. We all know it was harmless exuberance. Others – not just “enemies”, but also people unfmiliar with our support – might look at pictures of fans on the pitch and imagine something more sinister. We need to keep that in mind at all times.

By the way, when did you last have fish & chips – haven’t used newspapers for years :-)

  10. It’s very revealing that the only ‘peepil’ to have heard songs about Lee Rigby were not at the match.

Sad and desperate people using a young man’s tragic death to score points…they are the scum!

So last night you were giving it the, any incident is disgraceful and now your saying its ok in some instances, a bit of consistency of argument might help your case.

Stories about Brentford riot & Sevco bus arson shouldn’t surprise; these are kind of people we’re faced by:

  14. Honest cover up,

So one extreme to the other, quality grown up argument, I’ve no condemned the BHOYS for a bit of away day exuberance there was nothing threatening or malicious in their intent just a big party day, and you and the rest of the pewees are spouting meeja mana, away n bile yer heed

  15. Derbyshirebhoy,

“I presume then that your comment implies that events such as yesterday would have no effect on opinion amongst decision makers?”

No. I don’t think it has any bearing on Celtic playing in England.

Because Celtic will never be invited to participate in the English leagues. The behaviour of our fans has nothing to do with it. Football politics will prevent any such move.

I was at the game yesterday. There was no aggression in any of the incidents. There was a party atmosphere in various parts of west London and the pubs were doing a roaring trade.

In an ideal world I don’t want to see Celtic fans making an arse of themselves because they have had too much drink. These sorts of things happen at parties and weddings all the time … it’s not good behaviour, but it is certainly not a big deal either.

I’d bet Celtic will be playing another pre-season fixture in London next summer. These invites to England come because of our support – three sides of Griffin Park were reserved for our fans yesterday.

I’ll bet there are more people arrested at Brentford every other week than there were on Saturday.

  17. Is it just me but whenever there is a negative story or performance, Posters who don’t grace our pages for months suddenly appear from nowhere lecturing us all.

Anyhow on a smaller lovely story, did any of ye see the video of the little Downs Syndrome Bhoy, I think Jay is his name on the Celtic Bus at Solitude. Its pure brill, a ghuy sent it to me on Facebook I’m rubbish with links etc. I just pressed Share and hopefully I’ve sent it on to my Facebook Friends. If I have then 7 or 8 CQN’ers will see it,maybe they could post a link. Its really worth a view.

There is a great chippy at Girvan harbour who do a special special fish supper. A wee jaunt down there from the caravan in this fine weather is a must.

TV only extends the reach of the subjectivity, after a bit of tut tuting who cares? Folk make rash ill informed judgements all the time.

Brentford will not go down in the same annals of history of Manchester or Barcelona because no violence occured, no one got hurt.

My point is it is unrealistic to expect someone to be what they are not because they wear the hoops and instead try to make the best of what they are.

We are in danger of setting ourselves up for a massive fall from grace if we deny the human nature of both the actor and the observer.

  19. The Boy Jinky on

Met announce they got caught out by celtic support yesterday. … next time they will bring sun tan lotion and sandwiches as it’s easiest and best humoured rioters ever.

Local publicans distressed… we could have sold treble the alcohol if we had knew they were here for a party.

Club officials meanwhile disappointed that only 6, 000 away fans paid good money and left without wrecking the toilets or abusing catering staff.

  20. Auld heid

I agree …but the club have to take the lead

This disgraceful performance by The Sun cannot go unchallenged

And …not any behind closed doors rubbish

An official statement and ban the beggars until they eat humble pie

  21. Well my share worked, The Boy Jinky has seen it. I’d love to get a link up on CQN, I think ye would all love it. Maybe Jinky himself could do the needful.

Craig Burley: Rangers are more likely to be able to take on Stalybridge Celtic than the real thing

Rangers’ talk that they are getting ready for the next time the Old Firm clash is rubbish, says CRAIG.

    21 Jul 2013 12:10

SO the Rangers rebuild is well on its way – with one high roller suggesting a team is being built to take on Celtic. What,

    Stalybridge Celtic?

But winning the next Old Firm game with this lot? Do me a favour.

Let’s be brutally honest – the majority of these players would get nowhere near this club had it not imploded 18 months ago.

This the chance of a lifetime for them to walk out every other week to almost 50,000 punters.

Most of them are good pros and decent players to be fair but to be in it for the long game at the Old Firm you have to be a cut above.

When the crunch comes two years from now the majority will walk out with a carriage clock and cuddly toy as a thank you.

  23. I just wish our club would ban the media now we don’t need them they are scum and never print negative stories about Sevco the charity thieves.
