Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

I just asked a Spurs fan about Tom Huddleston without mentioning we are being linked with him.

He said: “He has an eye for a pass, can score spectacular goals and was instrumental in Tottenham’s Champions League campaign a couple of years ago.

“He dropped out of the picture last season because of injury. He needs runners around him to get the best of his talent. A very good player.”

Because Celtic will never be invited to participate in the English leagues.

Sadly you’re probably right so I wonder how many more years we’ll be consoling with what wonderful fans and memories we have. For me that may only be till they return to the top league. I’m not sure I can deal with that return to as it was which may go some way to explain my desperation.

Thanks for sight of that Scotsman article. The conclusion that Scotland has to admit their is a problem and address it is exactly the same as mine in a chapter in the receny published Edinburgh University Press book Bigotry, Scotland and Football in the narrower context of Scottish football and msm reporting of it.

I’m unable to reproduced because of copyright but a book launch is planned for August which along with the Scotsman article will help focus on the issue.

I might be in the minority but I’m not in favour of Celtic playing in the English leagues. I have no truck with English football – over-hyped rubbish in my opinion and a bubble that will burst at some point causing severe catastrophe. For many of those involved in the circus

The idea of Celtic dominating in a country where there is so much antagonism towards our club actually thrills me. We have provided Scotland with its biggest achievement on the football stage and for many people that sticks in the craw.

As for Sevco. Their only appeal is the laughter they unintentionally provide us with. They will offer no challenge to Celtic for many years They are not our rivals. They are a new two bob outfit.

Europe is where the appeal is for Celtic. No reason why we can’t play in the Champions League on a regular basis and enjoy all that comes with it.

  27. Video Celts

The Scottish Sun has quickly removed three pictures from their story of the fire at Bruce Coaches in Salsburgh.

Online readers were shocked this morning to see pictures of Neil Lennon and Celtic fans used to illustrate the story alongside quotes from Ally McCoist.

Whoever it was at The Scottish Sun that picked those pictures to go alongside the story is likely to have a lot of explaining to do with the pictures quickly removed as anger spread on social networks.

The fire at Bruce Coaches appears to have been a well orchestrated arson attempt with firefighters called from all over Lanarkshire to deal with the blaze.

Recently Bruce Coaches got one of their vehicles kitted out in Rangers colours for the Third Division champions to use for away trips. The vehicle was also available for hire to the general public.

That coach was one of four totally destroyed by the blaze prompting Ibrox boss McCoist to ask: “It’s absolutely pathetic that someone would go to that extreme. I don’t know the exact circumstances but it looks like it’s been a premeditated attack on the Rangers team bus.

“There’s absolutely no excuse for that and I hope the police find the culprits.”

How McCoist is able to speculate on the reasons for an industrial fire in Salsburgh while he is on tour with his club is anyone’s guess just like the decision to link pictures of Lennon and Celtic fans to the story.

While the incident is unlikely to have the effect of the Daily Record’s infamous ‘Thugs and Thieves’ story about Celtic players in 2002 it’s bound to lead to an inquiry within News International.

The Scottish Sun used to have the best record in the business when it came to editing but last Sunday a picture of Bahrudin Atajic was used alongside an interview with Beram Kayal.

This week’s honest mistake is likely to have far deeper consequences than mistaken identity on a picture desk.

Problem is having to suffer the dirge of games for the vast majority of the league campaign to get there.

Now if we had a reasonable prospect of a European league re-organisation I might feel encouraged but more and more of the same is a dire prospect for me though to be clear if Celtic are playing I’ll be watching whether I’m relishing it or not.
