Over the summer I could frequently be heard muttering, “We need a left back”. Despite returning from injury at the turn of the year, Emilio Izaguirre was unable to command a regular starting place in the team. His occasions starts provided evidence why. With Charlie Mulgrew the most authoritative central defender in the squad the left back slot looked like our most vulnerable position.
Emilio’s early form this season was no better, especially in the Champions League qualifiers, but recent weeks has seen the player return to his very best. His confidence seems to have returned as he is taking opponents on with purpose which had been missing for over a year.
On this form, we can look forward to seeing him test himself at the Camp Nou.

Although the bias is there and these stats help indicate it.
We can still offset them slightly by adding in the fact we play a highly attacking game, when our backs are often exposed and full-backs pushed high up the pitch. This does not balance the stats but as I say, offset them slightly.
I would rather see the numbers for players in certain positions likelyhood to get booked depending on the team.
Add in how many times players are booked for celebration or dissent against the referee in different teams.
To me that is a far more clear indication of bias.
If there is any way to extrapolate that data for comparison I’d be far more interested.
My reasoning behind that is referees make mistakes. Our make more than their fair share (understatement) but different referees approach games differently.
Their attitudes to chat back and un-sportsman like behaviour (which apparently over-celebrating is) surely remain the same.
If they are seen to book certain teams more for certain offences then that is bias.
It also takes away the argument of “personal interpretation”

I collected various referee stats for last season, and earlier.
One of the most remarkable, which I posted on here, was about Collum’s record as a referee:
10.1 times more likely to award Rangers a penalty than Celtic.
3.5 times more likely to award a penalty against Celtic than against Rangers.
Dives? Amoroso for Juve v us. Eduardo for Arsenal v us. Lovenkrands v Thommo.
Dives, any Orc against any team, Elbows for instance against Stirling what a sad sack he is having to cheat against the worst team in Scotland, Tut Tut Jiggy…

Ahhh, what a prat. Bales at the weekend was the same, a blatant attempt at cheating the ref that gets laughed off, Boyds was far worse from the commentator to me though, he pretty much said, ahh u cant blame him.
What about the McGeady booking at Easter Road under BTM, getting booked for riding a tackle at full stretch preventing injury, ridiculous.
Didnt the commentator slam McGeady for going down easy that day?

Don’t watch low league highlights, wouldn’t know, sorry.
But Elbows is a pathetic excuse for a “professional” so will take your word for it.
C’mon folks, keep the controversy commentary coming.
Good morning fellow Celts, a beautiful day in Renfrewshire.
Looking forward to some specifuc details from Mr O’G …it was this week?
Interesting data on Refs. Cards etc.
I feel that only tells part of the story as the real issues are hidden from stats. A foul given in own half does not equal a foul given in opponents’ half, or around the 30/20 yard area.
Then there are the fouls not given, or the disruption to tempo -an old trick;
– giving daft decisions ‘for’ Celts when the result is beyond doubt… Late sending off for opponent when you are 3 up with 5 mins to go will ‘appear’ in the stats as a balancing item – but it’s clearly not.
Someone mentioned there is a doctorate awaiting someone who can show the oul’ mibbery correlation –

It’s called the Camp Nou in Cataluña due to adgectives bieng after the noun in Catalan and Spanish.

That is a brilliant article by the welsh guy on his hunland experience. Its very perceptive and really sums them up with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.
Moonbeams,
Cheers for that article by the Swansea fan – interesting read – seems like he’s got Rangers and all they “stand for” well and truly sussed. What a low-life, boorish bunch they are….but we’ve known that for years!

Son of Gabriel,
I agree there are all sorts of issues that can be claimed ‘distort’ the picture, including so called dissent, but as far as us playing an attacking game is concerned I would have thought the impact on the foul and card statistics would be to reduce them for us Realistically if you were to set them in the context of possession which we would normally dominate Celtic should therefore commit fewer fouls and receive fewer cards.
Nothing Without Fans,
I opened a dialogue, with Mort, on this last night and am prepared to put some time into it to try to highlight the issue and get something done about it. I’d be interested to see your detailed stats and to know the source of the data. I’ve also got some other ideas about how to cut the broader data to attempt at least to make sense of it.
Paul will give you my email if you are prepared to share it and we can take this discussion away from the blog until we’re ready to present some fuller stats.

So it seems Levein may well call up Kris Commons if Snodgrass is injured. Do you think Kris will be tempted to tell him he has booked a wee holiday and can’t make it?

Judging by the prices St Johnstone charged at our recent match at McDiarmid, it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest, if SJ decided against the wish of Celtic charging a lower price.
Half the gate, and both clubs must agree on prices being charged.
Total fools.
Haw Gerry bhoy if your looking in how was the arc on Sunday anyway seem to be getting the hang of this Internet thing managed to do a google search this morning and found that the weather was fine in East Kilbride now I can get on with the rest of my day

On that side of the argument you are correct ser! But I would counter that by saying that due to our high positioning and the fact most teams only regularly attack us on the break a higher percentage of our tackles are chasing back and last ditch.
However your side re-balances my argument I would think so we’re back to square one.

dives –
John McDonald, Huns game at Celtic Park, early 80’s, back to the defender, did a wee flick and turn, hit the deck in the classic forward lunge, only problem, the celtic defender had stepped away from him, not into him, he then looked at the ground as if it had been booby trapped.
For me, it hasto be the Giggs’ dive.
Not just because it was cheating, but due to the previous respect I had for the player and, of course, he cheated the club who provided his Testamonial opposition.
Most of the other local candidates would not surprise you, but Giggs?
Of course, later, other offield revelations showed some character flaws.
League tables came up on T.V. on Saturday. Queens Park top with a game in hand.

John MacDonald was the original Polaris – the first in a long line of diving huns. He was doing it before simulation was a footballing term
My Everton-supporting colleague says Jelavic has not dived once for them and, in his fleeting appearances so far, neither has Naismith.
Why do you reckon that is?
