Emilio back on form ahead of Camp Nou

693

Over the summer I could frequently be heard muttering, “We need a left back”.  Despite returning from injury at the turn of the year, Emilio Izaguirre was unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  His occasions starts provided evidence why.  With Charlie Mulgrew the most authoritative central defender in the squad the left back slot looked like our most vulnerable position.

Emilio’s early form this season was no better, especially in the Champions League qualifiers, but recent weeks has seen the player return to his very best.  His confidence seems to have returned as he is taking opponents on with purpose which had been missing for over a year.

On this form, we can look forward to seeing him test himself at the Camp Nou.

He has fined his players in the past and doesnt shy away from telling them when he feels they go down too easy

My Everton-supporting colleague says Jelavic has not dived once for them and, in his fleeting appearances so far, neither has Naismith.

Why do you reckon that is?

Because it was being coached into them that they’d get away with most of it up here.

    Different down there though.

I think the Sandy Jardine thing was to do with him pretending to be head butted by a Morton player… Could be wrong though

“For me, it hasto be the Giggs’ dive.”

    Giggs didn’t dive.

It was never a foul but he didn’t dive and he didn’t even claim for a foul. The referee alone (that idiot that was in charge in Seville) was responsible for that mess.

  5. I think we should be thinking about farming out some of our fringe players and top young ‘uns for a bit of first team experience in the lower leagues for the second half of the season. In particular it would be good to offer Queens Park some reinforcements for their push for promotion from Div 3!

John MacDonald was the original Polaris – the first in a long line of diving huns. He was doing it before simulation was a footballing term

Davie Wilson had perfected the Dark Art earlier than Polaris.

He was probably the prototype for deliberately setting out to con officials on a regular basis.

  7. gordon j,

Davie Wilson predates yer man by a decade or so.

It must be part of their contracts, probably not registered with the SFA.

  8. I find the talk of the stats important but it doesn’t really impinge on how the MIBs really cheat. I agree with Saltires in Sevilla. The MIBs, as Auldheid has mentioned on here before, can influence the game by not giving fouls when they should or giving fouls when they should let play flow or even worse (imo) giving fouls in favour of the team who actually committed the foul, e.g. punishing Izzaguirre, when he was the one fouled. How can one quantify such underhand behaviour? Getting rid of all those in charge of the SFA and their referees would be a good start.

Amateurs? By the looks of it so are several of the highly paid Sevconians currently plying their trade in Div 3, so I’m sure we can get round that one!

Aye, they are sailing close to the edge.

They have to go bust again, when I have no Idea, they can’t carry on as they are, they are losing money hnd over fist.

They are not fullfilling their licence conditions, yet nobody seems to care.

It might take a foriegn club to do something, cos nobody in scotland will do anything.

In saying that, I can’t see uefa doing anything either, they really can’t take the chance and open the can.

With regards to MIB stats. We would probably have to take into account the amount of possession of the ball we have. You are more likely to be fouled when trying to win the ball back than at any other time.

I remember Liverpool (in the 70’s/80’s) countering an argument about the number of penalties they received at Anfield by saying that they were constantly attacking and were therefore more likely to get a penalty that other teams.

I hope you don’t mind me posting the details of the GB appeal on your wonderful Blog

The Barca game will be one of those great Celtic Park nights, let’s kick it off with a great display from the fans ..

Green Brigade announcement on 125th anniversary tifo v Barcelona – please RT

On November 7, almost 125 years to the day from Celtic’s founding meeting in St Mary’s Chapel in the Calton, we take on the might of Barcelona in the Champions League on what promises to be another special night in the incredible history of our great club.

We are keen to mark this special night with a ‘tifo’

    befitting this fantastic occasion.

As you will know, before most European matches

we prepare a display around the curve at 111. These have become very popular, add to the electric atmosphere on European nights and, we’d like to think, help spur the team on to victory. We fund our tifos through membership fees, group fundraisers and merchandise sales and these have so far covered the costs of displays around the curve.

For the Barcelona game, however, we want to push

the boat and do something special, but we can only do it

    with your support.

If we can raise enough money we plan on

doing our biggest and best display yet.

We know times are tough but if you are able to

contribute anything – big or small –

we would greatly appreciate donations through paypal,

to greenbrigade@hotmail.co.uk. If you are able to donate,

please send as a gift and mark it ‘donation’.

    that was a shocker

    we were awesome that night

  17. That Juve dive in the 3-2 away defeat in Turin was indeed a shocker. But not as much of a shocker as me getting pelted on the head by a coin launched by Juve fans in the upper tier a minute later! Or a pal getting bitten by a police German Shepherd at Brescia airport on the way home! Or another pal getting the full rubber glove search by the Authorities at the airport!

    Happy days.
