Emilio back on form ahead of Camp Nou

693

Over the summer I could frequently be heard muttering, “We need a left back”.  Despite returning from injury at the turn of the year, Emilio Izaguirre was unable to command a regular starting place in the team.  His occasions starts provided evidence why.  With Charlie Mulgrew the most authoritative central defender in the squad the left back slot looked like our most vulnerable position.

Emilio’s early form this season was no better, especially in the Champions League qualifiers, but recent weeks has seen the player return to his very best.  His confidence seems to have returned as he is taking opponents on with purpose which had been missing for over a year.

On this form, we can look forward to seeing him test himself at the Camp Nou.

I thought I spotted a weakness in the Barcelona defence in the match with Real Madrid last night.

Now, if they will be kind enough to let us have the ball we might be able to eventually exploit it…

La Liga is not as strong as it used to be and it is certainly no Scottish Third Division.

    ASonofDan,

    From earlier…

Jabba in fine form today talking up his pal Fat Sally.

‘it’s up to McCoist to impose his will on them all without worrying about feelings and emotions.

But there is a school of thought which insists he’ll find that very difficult if not impossible. They say he can’t change his nature and become something he isn’t, a hard-nosed, cold and calculating manager capable of commanding respect and silencing a dressing-room as soon as he enters.

It’s widely assumed that McCoist is basically just too nice a bloke but he insists those who see him in that light are wrong.

Behind the laughing boy, he argues, lurks the steely man who can and will make the tough

    decisions.

He’ll tell you that person has always been there and that he could never have achieved everything he did as a player unless he’d been able to take care of himself on and off then pitch.

He can rhyme off the names of rugged, mean-spirited defenders who saw and felt his dark side but for his own sake now he has to let that character out of the basement. His highly-paid under-achievers need to see this other McCoist before they can cause any more embarrassment.

If he does exist it’s time for Rangers players and fans to see his Mr Hyde.’

And I thought all the muppet could do was whisper in a person’s

ear and then hide behind a polis…

I don’t think anyone with a brain is suggesting that “Coisty” is too nice a guy to be a manger. It’s more that he is too thick.

We’ve already seen “Mr Hyde” when he demanded the names of the Indepedent Panel were made public, effectively endangering their lives and property, then refusing to apologise.

I see Gary Lineker is getting panned re his comments abt a muslim player kneeling and saying a prayer after he scored. Pity there wasnt the same stooshie abt the Man U player being unable to start the game at ibroke cos he blesses himself i after saying a prayer in the centre circle. A ritual he has done all over the world but not in Scotland.

  7. If Sevco don’t get promoted this year which is possible on current form, then any league reconstruction that lets them back in the top flight, would be too obvious even in Scotland.

  14. afternoon , on the Barca being weakened at the back you never know , we will need to get at them to make this count , fast counter attacks like in Moscow may give us a chance of a goal or two ,

To back up this happy thought these are the stats from last weeks Benfice v Barca game , although Barca had 71% possesion, Benfica had more shots and corners, Barca did win 2-0 :(

    Benfica Barca

    possesion 29% 71%

    attempts on goal 12 10

    attempts on target 8 7

    corners 8 4

so although having little posssion Benfica still managed to create some presuure on the barcs goal.

  17. It was a revelation to me that iPox actually got a leccy bill. I thought they powered the dump via a gigantic Heath Robinson contraption working on all the hot air and wind bellowing from orc orifices and the maw of the biggest blowhard of them all, Chunky.

But maybe that’s what they need to power Elbows as he pistons his way through every match.

And leccy will be akin to mystery for them and a leccy bill will appear runic and strange to their illiterate and myopic minds.

You gotta cut them some slack…..they are so new at this civilization game, having been in existence for such a short time. Maybe they though everything was free at iPox, just like their predecessors.

I agree with you that Emilio is getting back to how he played before his injury, you can see an improvement in every game, there are a few others that have improved this season from last,Mikeal Lustig is coming on to a great game now,a big improvement on his showing from last season, Beram Kayal on his showing on Sunday,is back to his true form after his lay off, even big Fraser is improving with each game, and he’s got a record that few will ever reach,he’s the tallest player ever to put on the Celtic Jersey.

There’s one player I’m very happy that Celtic sighed in the close season. Efe Ambrose, he looks an outstanding signing, although he did make a mistake late on in the game yesterday, that’s was the first mistake he’s made in a Celtic Jersey,he’s a very promising Player for us.

There’s improvement all round the team especially in the club Captain Scott Brown he’s been great this season,it’s just a pity that we will see less of him, It seems like Neil is going to protect him from playing too many games by resting him more,I’m happy with that,a rest is as good as an injection of cortisone, the agony that Scott must be going through each time he goes on the Park, beggars believe.

I have a good feeling about this team,I went to the game on Sunday with my heart hoping for a big win 3-0, 4 -0,but my head said if we scraped a win I’d be delighted,I remember the games after we play away in Europe are usually hard, and were lucky if we came away with a draw,A 1-0 win was a good result for me yesterday, remember we had to put up with an anti-Celtic referee in Thompson,as well as a Hearts team that were out to win the game at all costs,I think it cost them more than it cost us,going with all the injuries they incurred in trying to maim our players.

It seems the referreeing problem is still with us this season,I think they were inducted too try and assist the Rangers at all times,But there is a bit of a dilemma for them now,Rangers are languishing in the third Division and we are top of the Premier League. There aren’t many friendly referrees to them in the 3rd division,(Well they haven’t been inducted yet)problem for Celtic is the inductees as still in the Premier League, and still out to harm us.

Looking forward to the games against Barcelona & Benfica, get a bit of sun on my back for a few days.

I take it that it was me you posted too.

If it was, I’m fine and hope that you are also.

You’ll be happy with the way Sammi is playing now.The supporters are starting to recognize that there is a hidden talent there and it’s starting too show it’s face more often,he’s great in some games and ordinary in others, but he loves the adulation that he’s getting at the moment, the more that we cheer him, the better he gets.

  22. Emilio was excellent yesterday but for me he had his best game in a Celtic jersey away to Spartak Moscow last week. He was nothing short of brilliant. Definitely back to his best.

As for Barca, no doubt about it, they looked very vulnerable at the back last night but in all honesty I would be happy with a point from our two games against them. Don’t get me wrong I still believe we can do something special in the CL this season but earning a victory against them is still very unlikely in my opinion. A point in Paradise will do me.

As optimistic as I am, I’m not forgetting that Real Madrid can make pretty much any defence look vulnerable,

And people have been saying Barca are weak at the back for a couple of years. Doesnt matter to them as long as they score more goals.
