Europa failure would compound acute challenge for also-rans

1087

I’m not going to laugh at results against Luxembourgers or Lithuanians – it’s not so long since Gibraltarians bloodied the nose of a team who went on to become invincible treble winners. Scottish clubs have a long history of pitching up in June and July wholly unprepared for European football.

These results only retain the ability to concern if they are not resolved by remarkably improved performances. Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic grew in stature last summer until they became a competitive Champions League team in the autumn. Others may do the same this season.

What will be clear long before the lottery of the European play-off rounds, is where the gaping chasm exists in Scottish football: are Celtic our only team competitive in Europe, or is there at least one other?

Neither you nor I care who competes in the Europa League, but failure there if Celtic progress to the Champions League will compound an already acute challenge for the Scottish also-rans.

  1. hi bhoys. good morning from a partly sunny west cheshire. this belgian lad seems allright.

    MACJAY:

    Don’t you pay attention?

You are being played. Played by a no-mark too.

There is injustice in every country in the world. There is injustice in every society in the world. There are some in every demographic of the world who, rather than do good, finger point and accuse others of not doing enough. Rather than acknowledging their own failings they take solace in their failures by trying to belittle others.

So feckin sad, on so many levels.

They are just impotent haters. Best ignored.

It is not what you say, it is not what you boast, it is not what you argue, it is not what you accuse, it is not who you name drop in reference to your heart of gold… it is none of that, it is only what have you actually, truly, done to alleviate the suffering of others.

And if the world doesn’t know you did it, who really cares, the suffering will continue and the haters will hate rather than help.

I’m done with the haters. They are a repulsive and repugnant irrelevance.

And they know who they are.

That is the saddest, sickest, part.

Are we to assume that irony hasn’t yet reached Australia?

  4. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

A Stor MHA CHROI, thanks for posting that Paul Lambert footage.

Paul was an excellent player for us and I had fotgotten how many really good goals he scored for us . He seemed to enjoy scoring against his former club , Motherwell.

Despite him going on about what happened to the first Ibrox club and how bad it was for Scottish football, it has not dimmed my view of Paul as a player with us.

If you are such an authority on hatred in Australia then please enlighten me mate as to your qualifications.

If, on the other hand, you have no experience of the issue, then your opinion on the subject matter is obtuse at best, so why proffer an obtuse opinion?

Or do you selectively read the Sun?

Agreed,Paul Lambert made a huge impact for us. He held our midfield together, could link up play and more importantly break down opposition movement.

And score some real beauties anaw!

My Dad used to get pelters off a young crew behind him in 111 in pre-GB days for his defence of PL who they thought brought nothing to the team. Me? I reckon if Tommy Burns had signed him in that position,we could have stopped their run.

An outstanding player,IMO,and well high on the list in the last 30 years or so.

  7. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby and A STOR, Paul was one of these players who you never really noticed until he was out injured and the effect it had on the way we played.

He played a big part in stopping the debt laden ten plus was an integral part of Martin’s team . His importance recognised by Martin by making him captain , in a team full of captains , from the 2001/02 season onwards.

Team of captains? I always thought Martin just left the armband out for whoever wanted to pick it up.

  9. HOT SMOKED

Another injury free run out, nothing much to report, sluggish first half much better in the second half. Hayes showed up well as did Ralston I thought, typical pre-season fair, Moussa dispatched the penalty with aplomb, onwards to Prague…

  10. mild mannered Pedro delgado on

    I loved Paul lambert

    But

Sometimes I thought the big occasion, big team got the better of him, and Jackie mac as well

The only two players of that era who I thought feared no one, were Henrik and sutty

  11. A Stor Mha Chroi

I think ernie was suggesting that you seemed to hate the haters and that that was ironic.

For me, `hate` simply means strong, negative emotions and I feel there are many things which generate strong, negative emotions.

Hope all is well in your own life.

    JJ

  12. Starry Plough.

Thanks for that. I am uncertain of the benefits accrued from playing Friendlies bit I still prefer it if we don`t lose !

  13. Pedro’s has announced that wearing green boots will be banned at sevco as they are the colour of Celtic plus signage of “We are the people” will adorn the crumble dome to show the strength of sevco

I can see a season of bitterness ahead with sevco given carte blanche to pursue a policy of bigotry & sectarianism unhindered

These so called protocols I kid you not that’s ‘what he calls them are orders from above to play the bigot card at every opportunity with the “blessing of King ,Traynor et al

  14. HOT SMOKED

I think Brendan agrees with you!

I lost interest in the game as I had no commentary on the stream I was watching but the players look like they are on instructions not to get injured and that’s fine I think coming up to the first important games of the season.

No dramas would be the watchword for me, last thing we need is one of our big players injured before the start of the qualifiers..

    Still undefeated!

  15. I wonder how the ` they`re just as bad as each other and whataboutery brigade` will square this one.

  16. Pedro has got the Huns howling with delight over on FF about his ban on the players wearing green boots. Silly Billys

  17. weebobbycollins on

No, Timjim…he is the one being worked well…he is a poor man’s ronny deila. At least ronny had dignity, something you will not find within the walls of the bigotdome. What next? Paint the grass blue?

  18. in that team, who feared no one , surely also bobo, valharren, mjallby, lennon, thompson,

  19. The Green Man says SACK THE Board on

    Morning Celts

Nice one from Pedro, hopefully that ban on all things Green extends to the zombies boycotting Celtic Park.:)

    That would be perfect.

  20. TIMJIM on 2ND JULY 2017 10:46 AM

He’s a clown. If he was any kind of manager he’d shut his mouth and let his players do their talking on the park. As it is he’s ingratiating himself with the morons whilst he can ie before the season starts and his inability becomes apparent. I suppose that will buy him a few weeks breathing space until they realise that he’s just another in a long line of bullshit merchants who is milking them for all he can.
