Expensive lesson for football

669

The success rate of Celtic’s player recruitment strategy in recent years has been exceptional; pound-for–pound better than any period in our history.  Forster, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Wilson, Ledley, Wanyama, Commons, Kayal and Hooper have arrived for limited outlay and have propelled the club into the latter stages of the Champions League.

By contrast, Mo Bangura failed to impress on any occasion tested.  At another time it would be easy to write him off but it seems unusual that the current system for scouting and assessing footballers has led to a striker who only yesterday recorded his first goal for the club.

In all honesty I suspect Mo will not get a chance to turn things around at Celtic, there are several strikers ahead of him in the squad and our scouts will forever be working on fresh recruits, but this doesn’t mean he is a bad player.  It’s more likely that his induction into Scottish life missed a crucial step.

Did you see the story and photograph about Michael Johnson yesterday?  The 24-year-old was paid-off by Manchester City near the end of his £40k per week contract.  He was unfortunate with injuries but there is a lesson for football to learn in his demise.

The day anyone, young or old, clever or stupid, signs a £10m contract life can become one long party.  ‘You don’t like my attitude/weight/blood test/friends?  I’m on a multi-million pound contract, deal with it.’ How can football deal with this issue?

For the record, there is absolutely no connection between Mo, whose attitude has been first class, and Michael Johnson’s demise.

TBH I could see your point, he did have that Blue Peter look about him but it was alright.

Very little known about the Chachapoyas but they were clearly a very innovative tribe and worthy of respect….and The fortress of Kuelap, which I hadn’t heard of before, is quite awesome. Puts Machu Pichu (sp) in the shade.

Loved that post about your dad. I retired a year past august (2011) and did a little bit of school bus driving for a year but gave it up in sept. i just love not getting up these winter mornings at 0600 but do miss the every day banter with the ole workmates. Still, the poultry keeps me well up to speed with fitness, but after 50 yrs working it takes a bit of getting used to. Incidently, thanks for asking. :))

Fat Boab: As long as it is alive he will not eat it, but only if he kills it and it becomes a corpse.

Meisters: whoa Whoa whoa calm doon there big man but consider Otherwise he will not be able to do it. Ken.

    Breaking News..

CENTRAL Coast Mariners FC wish to officially advise that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Tomas Rogic to Celtic FC.

Rogic will now travel to Glasgow from Spain with ‘The Bhoys’, and will discuss personal terms with the Scottish giants over the coming days.

Subject to Rogic reaching a personal agreement with Celtic, the attacking midfielder will formally be transferred to Neil Lennon’s team.

Central Coast Mariners FC will advise members, fans and media of any further updates regarding this matter when they occur.

Rogic case raises more strategic questions..

    Craig Foster The World Game..

Tom Rogic will possibly play in the UEFA Champions League with Celtic but is the move really the right one for him?

I’m not so sure, particularly given that after a likely brief interlude in the UCL, it is back to the weekly grind of playing against Hearts and Inverness – not a high quality of football.

Tom is, like all of our young players heading abroad, not yet the finished product and has plenty of learning yet to undergo, and therefore the imperative for him to become the best player possible is to transition into an environment where he can continue his football education.

This goes for all of our kids because Australia’s youth coaching system is so deficient.

Australia needs Tom, one of a very few true creative players we have seen in the past decade, to continue to learn and improve, not just to be able to deal with pressure, which he will need to do at Celtic, but to play in a team that is tactically flexible and forces him to understand his role in a way that will translate to international football.

The short-term risk for the player is less by going to Celtic because the different level of thought required in Italy, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands or Spain makes the transition potentially more complex, one reason why so many of our players have moved to Britain down the years. The long-term risk, however, is far greater.

Australia’s long-term strategic goal should be to produce players for these other markets who are more in line with where we want our football to go, which is why it is heartening to see Robbie Kruse and others making their way in German football at present.

But putting aside for the moment cultural issues, I believe we must look at the manner in which such transfers occur, largely the product of the interests and contacts of the club and agent or agents involved, rather than the broader interests of the game.

This is not to question the particular agent involved, rather to raise the issue that the broader game should play a fundamental role in directing Australia’s kids rather than simply the force of commerce or opinions and beliefs of a small subset of the game.

Rogic has been lighting the A-League up for two seasons, ample time for thought to have been applied to an ideal move for his, and Australia’s, interests.

We need as a game to amalgamate all the knowledge we have accumulated and contacts developed by our players through the years to arrive at a strategic set of partners we can utilize to place our best players at the appropriate time.

Look, for instance, at players like Scott Chipperfield whose former club FC Basel regularly participated in the Champions League as well as Timmy Cahill with Everton, Brett Holman with AZ, Jason Culina with PSV, Mark Bresciano and Vince Grella with several Italian clubs, Zeljko Kalac with Milan and so on.

All of these players together have an accumulated network that spans the primary countries and clubs we are seeking to connect with our best young talent, yet little if any attempt has been made to utilize their experience.

As a nation, we should target specific countries in which we want Aussie players to work, and set about strengthening our ties directly with these clubs to actually place our best players, rather than leave their future to market forces or short-term decision making.

This is particularly important when there is pressure from A-League clubs to cash in on young players to keep the money flowing in, which can heavily impact the decision making of the players involved.

This will become far more important in future as Australia’s youth development starts to bear fruit whereas, for now, most of our players are wanted by lower European leagues or Asian clubs, rather than at the top level.

But as one of the most promising players seen in years, Tom’s move has raised an important question as to whether we can better prepare ourselves as a nation to ensure our future stars can continue their education in leagues that are ranked among the best, a necessity if we are ever to succeed in international football.

Australia should have a national strategy, a coordinator to cement these relationships and work with the clubs to facilitate the move at the right moment for both parties, and a support mechanism for the players to assist their ongoing career development.

It will take an investment and time to implement, but the return for the players and Australia’s international future will be immense.

    Well Craig

I seem to remember a certain young player coming to CELTIC FC from Sweden and after 7yrs of learning and improving his game he went to a wee obscure club in Spain won 2 La Liga titles and came on as a sub to win the CL for them .(after the final whistle Thierra Henry was asked what made the difference in the game and he said HENRIK LARSSON he made the difference )Latterly he was snapped up by AF to aid his wee club in their quest to win the EPL in 2007 ,which they duly did .

So I would not worry about young Rogic as if he is willing to learn and is good enough then this is the benchmark of what you can achieve after learning your trade at CELTIC FOOTBALL CLUB
