Expensive lesson for football

669

The success rate of Celtic’s player recruitment strategy in recent years has been exceptional; pound-for–pound better than any period in our history.  Forster, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Wilson, Ledley, Wanyama, Commons, Kayal and Hooper have arrived for limited outlay and have propelled the club into the latter stages of the Champions League.

By contrast, Mo Bangura failed to impress on any occasion tested.  At another time it would be easy to write him off but it seems unusual that the current system for scouting and assessing footballers has led to a striker who only yesterday recorded his first goal for the club.

In all honesty I suspect Mo will not get a chance to turn things around at Celtic, there are several strikers ahead of him in the squad and our scouts will forever be working on fresh recruits, but this doesn’t mean he is a bad player.  It’s more likely that his induction into Scottish life missed a crucial step.

Did you see the story and photograph about Michael Johnson yesterday?  The 24-year-old was paid-off by Manchester City near the end of his £40k per week contract.  He was unfortunate with injuries but there is a lesson for football to learn in his demise.

The day anyone, young or old, clever or stupid, signs a £10m contract life can become one long party.  ‘You don’t like my attitude/weight/blood test/friends?  I’m on a multi-million pound contract, deal with it.’ How can football deal with this issue?

For the record, there is absolutely no connection between Mo, whose attitude has been first class, and Michael Johnson’s demise.

I think SAF’s approach has always stretched the rules to the limit – somewhere just short of cheating. Sometimes wished we’d had more of that attitude over the years. But not always

He was just incredibly knowledgeable about the game- and had no probs with me and my mate being Celts. I think the only men I have spoken with who seemed to just know the game as well were Sean Fallon and Bobby Murdoch. I never met big Jock though heard him at a couple of film nights

  3. The oldco=newco lie will eventually surface, once it needs to be passed beyond the jurestiction of the cabal who invented it. Have they negotiated a contract with either umbro or tennents ? as previous deals expired on rangers liquidation, or are buying their fancy dress off the shelf (from sports direct??) – I’m sure we would have heard all about sponsorship deals if they had any.

So they need a shirt manufacturer and sponsor deal for next season so that they don’t pay for the priviledge, just like all the other 3rd division teams don’t. Just another few cards for chas to produce for the new big hoose he’s buildin, assuming he’s hangin aboot for next season, once him or ticketbus have cashed the season ticket money. Nae wonder he’s always in rant/diversion mode.

Get a grip newco, and get some strips sorted. No to naturist fitbae (unless they win the case to join the wummins league they were talking aboot last week)

BTW Hope Lenny can put the Bangura experience into the some you win, some you loose, box. Every signing is a gamble, and Lenny is well-up so far.

Yep fair comment Jimbo. If we had a Fergie or Jim McLean in the 80’s I honestly think we could have come very close to another European trophy. And Fergie is a big admirer of Big Jock and learned a lot from him as well. Fergie certainly bent the rules and just kept within the laws of the game, I guess you could say that was him learning and adjusting to the modern game.

Not surprised he did not have any problem with you being Celts, he has never come to me as being anti Celtic.

Never had the pleasure of meeting big Jock, but I can imagine it would have been special to have spent some time in his company talking football. Big Jock is and always will be my hero.

  5. Man City player Roque Santi Cruz comes on for Malaga (on loan)

I forgot all about him including Adebayor and Santi Cruz how much did Man City spend on strikers ?

  6. Dan

Aye I always have thought the 80s werre a missed opportunity for Celtic, the Board did not help but there was a lack of mental toughness in our team as well. Never demonstrated more than when we played Forest.

As I say never spoke to Jock but he seemed very relaxed at the functions I was at when he wad jjust answering the fans questions. A man we owe more to than any other.

He was a barca hero of past who served his apprenticeship in management moulding and developing the youth in the shapw of messi n co whom loved and respected him because of the impact he had in them at a young age … .

Some on peps signing at he end were disappointing .

He has no chance signing the likes of messi, xavi, ineista puyol n co.

Therefore I think the Germans will undo him …

News that Kirk Broadfoot has been found in the frozen aisle of a Blackpool Tesco priced at 99p confirms that players in England are over-rated.
