Expensive lesson for football

669

The success rate of Celtic’s player recruitment strategy in recent years has been exceptional; pound-for–pound better than any period in our history.  Forster, Mulgrew, Lustig, Matthews, Izaguirre, Wilson, Ledley, Wanyama, Commons, Kayal and Hooper have arrived for limited outlay and have propelled the club into the latter stages of the Champions League.

By contrast, Mo Bangura failed to impress on any occasion tested.  At another time it would be easy to write him off but it seems unusual that the current system for scouting and assessing footballers has led to a striker who only yesterday recorded his first goal for the club.

In all honesty I suspect Mo will not get a chance to turn things around at Celtic, there are several strikers ahead of him in the squad and our scouts will forever be working on fresh recruits, but this doesn’t mean he is a bad player.  It’s more likely that his induction into Scottish life missed a crucial step.

Did you see the story and photograph about Michael Johnson yesterday?  The 24-year-old was paid-off by Manchester City near the end of his £40k per week contract.  He was unfortunate with injuries but there is a lesson for football to learn in his demise.

The day anyone, young or old, clever or stupid, signs a £10m contract life can become one long party.  ‘You don’t like my attitude/weight/blood test/friends?  I’m on a multi-million pound contract, deal with it.’ How can football deal with this issue?

For the record, there is absolutely no connection between Mo, whose attitude has been first class, and Michael Johnson’s demise.

I just got round to reading Fergie’s autobiography. As footballers biographies go its one of the best. Two points stand out prior to his Man Utd career; his total admiration for Jock Stein and the team spirit he built, and his loathing of the bigots inside Ibrox when he was a player. Fergie doesnt miss the club secretary of the time who wanted him out the door when he found out his wife was RC. Oh and the well documented hun pitch invasions of late 60’s get a mention.

Sad club then, even sadder now.

Some bhun clown on SSB said tonight that, since Uefa hadn’t the zombies co-efficient, it meant Uefa recognised them……honest, that’s what he said……!!!!…and, of course, the pundits didn’t put him straight, in that, of course it should be counted up until they were Liquidated, since it is a Scottish Clubs’ overall co-efficient built up, and adjusted, over the years. ……nothing changes…..silly bhuns, and ‘rotten to the core’ Scottish media …….

Never mind, we’ll do our best to keep their co-efficient up ……LOL

That reminds me of a hun who called SSB not long after the CVA was voted down and they were staring down the barrel of liquidation. He claimed that Celtic were liquidated in 1994 when Fergus came to the rescue. According to the caller, Fergus liquidated the old company and started a new one as Celtic Football Club plc.

The SSB pundits, including Gordon Dalzell and Robert Grieve just hummed and hawed and really had no answer. I was driving my car home from work here in Oz while listening to a podcast of the show, and couldn’t believe they had no answer to the guy’s absurd claims.

Fortunately, it took a Celtic fan to call in 10 minutes later and give them the answer, that Fergus had settled the bank debt and had renamed the club because it was now a PLC. There was no administration and no liquidation. Fergus paid hard cash for the club, but he could have allowed it to go down and acquire it for a pittance. The Celtic caller thankfully also took the pundits to task for not even attempting to counter the hun caller’s claims.

Of course, to a man, they defended themselves by claiming the call was so ridiculous that they didn’t want to lend it credence, despite letting him ramble on for 5 minutes to make his ridiculous claims.

These guys are paid good money to work on these shows and they simply have not got the intellectual capacity to take on an unexpected question or point of view.

    A complete joke.

Australian teenager Tom Rogic wins a contract to the Nike Football Academy

By Max Mason FOX SPORTS January 28, 2011 3:17PM

18-year-old Tom Rogic is off to the UK. Source: Supplied

Australian teenager Tom Rogic has officially been declared one of the eight best young football players in the world, beating 75,000 hopefuls to secure a contract with the Nike Football Academy in the UK.

Still coming to terms with his achievement Rogic is humble, yet confident,

“It’s pretty unbelievable, I was lucky to get a spot, but I’ve worked pretty hard and I’m glad I’ve a reward out of it,” he said.

The Nike Football Academy offers non-contract players a chance to enter the professional game, and eight players have gone on to secure a professional contract in the UK since its inception in 2009 a trend Rogic hopes to continue,

“I’ve got the aim of staying over there (UK) and playing professional football after these 12 months.”

Coming from a futsal background, Rogic represented Australia in the indoor format of the game and has taken to the grass pitch without any hesitation.

“I’ve been a part of the Australian men’s futsal team for the past year or so, it’s definitely helped me as a player,” Rogic said.

Under the intense eye of professional coaches, 18-year-old Rogic shone during the three-day trials of ‘The Chance’ competition.

Rogic had been training with Central Coast Mariners prior to the competition, and head Mariners coach Graham Arnold was prepared to sign the youngster should things have ended differently in London.

“From day one we knew he was preparing for the Nike Chance and I sat down and had a chat with him before he left, saying there was a contract on the table should he have come back,” Arnold said.

“Fortunately for Tom, he has achieved his goal and I am absolutely delighted for him. He’s a great kid, he fit in really well with all the boys and I’m sure he’ll go on to have a wonderful career.

The Chance is fast being recognised by coaches as a breeding ground for young talent.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is one firm believer in the academy.

“The Chance gives young players around the world the opportunity to showcase their talent, enhance their game, and offers the ultimate dream, the chance of becoming a professional player,” Wenger said.

“The eight players who have won their place at the Nike Academy demonstrated great technical ability and dedication to succeed at the final trials.

Having already represented Australia in the indoor format, Rogic said he definitely harboured aspirations of wearing the green and cold jersey.

“Anybody that plays football dreams of playing for their country, it’s definitely a goal of mine,” he said.

Rogic will now leave Australia prior to starting his contract with the Academy in July this year,

“This is definitely life-changing,” Rogic said.

“I Guess I’m moving to England

Celtic will enter negotiations with Australia midfielder Tom Rogic after a fee was agreed between the Scottish Premier League champions and Central Coast Mariners.

The 20 year-old’s future has been the leading A-League transfer story, with Fulham, QPR and Reading having also taken an interest.

But having joined Celtic on trial for their mid-season training camp in Spain, it now appears Rogic is destined for a move to Glasgow.

“Central Coast Mariners FC wish to officially advise that terms have been agreed for the transfer of Tomas Rogic to Celtic FC,” a club statement read.

“Rogic will now travel to Glasgow from Spain with the Bhoys, and will discuss personal terms with the Scottish giants over the coming days.”

The move is still subject to personal terms between Celtic and Rogic, with the fledgling Australia international expected to cost about 600,000 Australian dollars (£395,000).

Celtic assistant manager Johan Mjallby is hopeful the move can be completed. He said: “It is great news Tom is coming back with us and hopefully we will get the deal done. He has been really impressive in training and you can see he has real ability.
