Extra week training in July has huge impact

2173

I was concerned about a trip to Estonia after hearing Hearts struggle in their home leg against Estonian opponents last week, so news that Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps beat Flora Tallinn was welcome, although the concern was tempered as news arrived that Hearts were three goals up in the away leg.

The lesson here is that in July, one more week’s training has a huge impact on performance.

Brendan Rodgers will be happy with how training has progressed thus far, but it’s only when players put multiple 90 minutes under their belts that they are ready for competitive action. There’s not necessarily a great deal of work to do to overcome Red Imps (no offence intended), but qualifiers come thick and fast thereafter. Despite beating Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana yesterday, I expect Celtic will be more motivated for Saturday’s game against Maribor.

It gets serious from now onwards.

Hail Hail fella, hope yer well.

Maybe it’s a case of – the manager hizny goat it ?

Unlikely, but time will tell. And I’m not the best person to judge that. I liked / still like Mr Deila.

  3. Sorry, just to elaborate, KevJ.

I think Brendan has got it. But he will suffer from the same problem as many preceding Celtic managers. That playing the “Celtic Way” must be evident in every game. Whereas the reality is that 10 man defences present a very difficult problem to overcome.

It’s a different type of player unlock tight defences than having, for example, a Jamie Vary who thrives on exploiting space behind defenders.

The same is true of the Celtic goalkeeper. A keeper playing for a lesser team who makes fantastic save after miraculous save isn’t necessarily what we require. You need a keeper who needs to concentrate even though not directly involved in the game for 95% of the time. Know when to play sweeper, know when to stay back and still be able to make those saves perhaps only once or twice in a game.

Forster had it. Gordon has it. Though both a little suspect at the sweeper aspect.

On saying nothing with regard to LNS there was some justification at the time because the Decision was based on legal advice that the SPL Board of which Eric Riley was a member, but not in attendance when the SPL Board accepted it. That advice was based on the ebt and side letter arrangement being legal so all clubs could have used them and so no basis to argue.

The announcement that there would be an appeal meant Celtic had a hook to hang on since if only RFC was using them and others COULD not because they were illegal there had to be a sporting advantage.

That is the basis of current club policy and it is hard to argue as any premature appeal would be thrown out on same basis LNS was grudgingly accepted in 2013.

However in 2014 it became clear following correspondence between SFM and Harper Macleod that LNS was flawed in that he treated DOS ebts that were illegal as legal.

On that basis alone LNS imo should have been set aside as misled by a failure of RFC to supply letters that would have not only changed the terms of reference of the Commission if supplied but rendered the advice provided impossible to make if Harper Macleod had been aware of them prior to advising the SPL Board.

I think that if only from a PR point Celtic should be insisting LNS be set aside and a new Commission to look at events in their entirety including the misleading of the SPL set up in 2017 once the BTC final outcome is known.

I’d go further. Since one of the letters kept from Harper MacLeod/ LNS was according to our information gleaned from SFA in 2014 kept from the SFA and UEFA in 2011 that the UEFA licence process itself should be included.

This reality itrain is heading down the tracks at a slow pace because of fear of prejudicing current court cases but when that is over it will speed up and is one Scottish football led by Celtic should be bracing and preparing itself for rather than the current ostrich approach of hoping it will get derailed before it reaches Reality Central.

  8. Auldheid well done to you and the bhoys for all your hard work, look forward to sharing a Rioja and a beer in that wee bar in Torremolinos some time soon. BTW anyone know what story with GMS is? Injury? Hail Hail Hebcelt

  9. Aukdheid why aren’t Celtic taking forward res12 rather than leaving it to you guys?

What reason do they have. I can think of none other than their own complicity in wider matters.

  10. Much work still to do

BRENDAN Rodgers has declared himself delighted with Celtic’s 13-day pre-season trip to Slovenia after the Hoops jetted out of Maribor bound for their first competitive contest of the campaign in Gibraltar.

Along with undergoing some intense training sessions in the summer heat, where the new manager had the opportunity to spend valuable time working with his players, the Scottish champions played four friendlies, winning two and drawing two, and honing their match sharpness.

While the Hoops boss admits he’s still in the early stages of implementing his plans for the team, he will lead his team into their UEFA Champions League second qualifying round tie against Lincoln Red Imps feeling positive about how his players have responded to his demands.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, he said: “It’s been a huge benefit as it takes you away and you are virtually in each other’s pockets for the two weeks.

“We have put in a lot of great work, not just on the field where the fitness has been developed throughout, but also in the tactical ideas we are trying to implement which I can see improving on a daily basis.

“You get to see them more in a pressure situation but certainly over time, they’re challenged in every aspect of the game – technically, tactically, physically and mentally.

“You get to see them operate under stress and with the conditions as well which are very hot and humid, so there are a lot of stresses put on the players. But they have coped excellently and their willingness and attitude to be better players has been very clear to me.

“It’s still going to take time for it to be fully integrated but we have been able to set some standards off the field as well, establishing as a team our goals that we want to achieve for the season and our values as a team, the real true values of how we want to work.

“So we have had that, along with lots of analysis, preparation and time together, getting to know characters and their behaviour.

“It’s been such a joy coming in,” he added. “The staff have been first-class and given us great support. All in all, it’s been a great experience, I have really enjoyed it so far.”

Having had time to work closely with the squad of players he inherited, the Irishman has been very pleased at their ability and commitment. He has also been able to identify what areas of the team he needs to bolster which he will do with careful precision.

“I have really enjoyed working with all the players and getting to see them,” said the manager. “Some I knew, like Scott Brown along with a few of the international boys, but others I didn’t have a great idea of and it’s been really good to look at them really closely and see how they are working.

“I have been really impressed by the quality of the team and if we can get some players in to help them and increase that quality, then it should serve us well for the season.

“There are one or two areas where the players need help with and that’s something the club and I are looking closely at to look and see if we can do anything on that front.”

Good luck with the hamstring rehab,my own is just getting back to normal after three weeks off work and crutches,I found the best part of the recovery was the exercises before you get up in the morning, the towel round the foot stretch exercise works unbelievably as well as the tiptoe stretches,it then became important to build the strength back in the gym as I’m sure you know, sitting about resting doesn’t help, good luck with it,an injury I never wish to have again.

  13. Afternoon bhoys and ghirls. CRC congratulations on 25th anniversary. My Mrs has put up with me for 29 last Monday or as I call it giving up my independence day.

Bit concerned that Roy is tinkering with the three things that did work last season – Griff through the middle, Roberts wide right and Tierney bursting forward. And keeping the same midfield three that were responsible for the Hampden debacle against Govan Wanderers.

Thanks, thankfully I have had plenty of experience of this injury. The new one is just a slight pull so with some stretching and rest I hope to be beck jogging in two weeks. Last one was a six week layoff, but I never learn and I did push it too hard last week.

I now will be using non impact cross training and core strengthening stuff all this week, followed by lower back and hamstring work the week after, here’s hoping for the best. This mornings session went well so as long as I don’t act like an arse again I should be okay.

Sounds like you had a full on tear of the muscle? Only did that once back in my youth , I share your pain. At that time I had full BUPA cover and I maxed it out on their physio plan.

    Good luck.

  16. Auldheid,

    Thanks for the updates.

It will be interesting to see what comes to pass following the Court Cases and BTC Appeal.

If and there now seems absolutely no reason why not, there is an acceptance that The Rangers FC Ltd is a new Club there seems little value in an LNS rerun, however there were issues raised during the Commission that should be re-examined, also the failure of governance and the five way agreement needs to be examined.

It seems inconceivable that Rangers Continuation Scenario is not examined and rectified.

Firstly, the secret nature of the agreement is totally unacceptable.

Secondly, the idea that some debts, sanctions and punishments can be visited on Newco for debts and offences of Oldco yet others can’t is simply nonsensical – especially the arbitrary nature in how this happens. Stewart Reagan is on record as saying these had to be re-negotiated after Sevco failed to get entry into the SPL and had to start life in the fourth teir – this in sporting and I believe legal terms is a nonsense.

Thirdly and related to the second, it should be decided and made clear and transparent if Sevco Rangers is a Continuation of Rangers FC PLC’S (1872) or Not. If it is it should assume ALL liabilities of Rangers 1872, the wrong doing of Oldco must be re-examined and title stripping , sanctions and penalties must be levied without “fear or favour”. If not, then the records and history of Sevco Rangers should be amended to reflect what the rules and regulations dictate and show clearly that they are a New Club (2012) unencumbered by the Oldco’s past.

The only way I can see this happening is if the SFA (not SPL as in the case of LNS) set up a TOTALLY independent, far reaching, transparent Commission with teeth to apply sanctions, determine outcomes.

Otherwise what about forcing the SFA’s hand with a Judicial review?

    Hail Hail

I had the goal of jogging on the running machine through a football game, naturally I put Lisbon on YouTube on the machine as motivation, each session I was adding 5 minutes onto the 2nd half and was doing really well however one morning I didn’t warm up properly and was in a rush to get it all over with,I was finding it tough mentally with about 6 mins left to go in the first half, changed my stride and the muscle went, like an eejit I ran through it until half time instead of stopping, very stupid,I also went out that night doing myself no favour,I also rested up too long whilst off work and got to the physio later than I should have,my work I’m on my feet all shift so it’s been hard and feels as though I have a steel rod through my calf muscle but I’ve noticed the last few days I haven’t been in pain at work so I’m getting somewhere, the good thing though is I’ve realised I really enjoy running and fancy making it a hobby, thanks for the chat.
